Canada Nickel signs agreement with First Nations for Crawford Nickel Project
This agreement is a 'significant' advancement in terms of progressing the Crawford Project, while also promoting cooperation with First Nations communities.
It also establishes an early business and employment opportunities framework as the parties work towards a comprehensive Impact Benefits Agreement (IBA).
The agreement encompasses pledges for transparent negotiations on significant contracting opportunities including the construction of a 25.2km railway line, the relocation of Highway 655 and the development of a temporary overpass on Highway 655.
These initiatives aim to promote economic development and address the priorities of the three First Nations.
Canada Nickel CEO Mark Selby said: 'This agreement is a milestone in the development of the Crawford Project and reflects our commitment to meaningful partnerships with First Nations and our respect for the Traditional Territories in which we are fortunate to operate.
'We value our ongoing work with Flying Post, Mattagami and Matachewan First Nations, and the collective advocacy efforts of Wabun Tribal Council, and we look forward to building on this foundation to deliver long-term benefits for their membership, our project, and the region writ-large.'
Scheduled between 2025 and 2029, these projects will prioritise First Nations businesses, promote own-source revenue, foster partnerships and support regional growth.
The agreement additionally sets up systems for transparency and cooperation, including regular engagement sessions. A First Nations business representative will also be appointed to coordinate opportunities within the project.
The primary initiatives outlined in the agreement involve giving priority access to businesses owned by First Nations for contract participation, as well as offering specialised training programmes aimed at improving local skills development.
Matachewan First Nation Chief Alex 'Sonny' Batisse said: 'This agreement provides a genuine starting point for addressing the impacts of the Crawford Project on our lands and people. It is a positive step towards ensuring Matachewan First Nation's members voices are heard and our rights are respected."
Canada Nickel also announced the results of the front-end engineering and design (FEED) activities for the project, which were completed by the company's consultants.
The main objective of the FEED was to revise the estimate of the initial capital costs.
Engineering efforts concentrated on the initial capital expenditure, drawing on information gathered from a winter geotechnical programme, a test piling initiative and revised quotations.
The mining schedule was reorganised to expedite the extraction of higher-value ore from the East Zone and decrease pre-stripping by 30%. Another significant alteration was the reorganisation of the mining schedule.
Ore from the East Zone will now be extracted and processed first, advancing by an average of 12 years, while ore from the Main Zone has been postponed.
"Canada Nickel signs agreement with First Nations for Crawford Nickel Project" was originally created and published by Mining Technology, a GlobalData owned brand.

Coastal Bend LNG and Solvanic Announce Carbon Capture FEED Study
HOUSTON--(BUSINESS WIRE)--Coastal Bend LNG, developer of a multi-train natural gas liquefaction and export facility along the Texas Gulf Coast, today announced it has commenced a front-end engineering and design (FEED) study with Solvanic for electrochemically mediated amine regeneration (EMAR) carbon capture at its Coastal Bend LNG facility. Solvanic has signed an option agreement for use of the EMAR technology, originally developed by Professor T. Alan Hatton's research group at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT) Department of Chemical Engineering. The technology uses an electrochemical process to release carbon dioxide (CO 2) captured by amines with electricity, rather than high temperature steam traditionally used in thermal amine systems. This innovative approach reduces the energy requirements and capital costs for carbon capture and enables much greater flexibility across operating conditions and process scales. The EMAR technology has been in development at MIT for over a decade, with recent breakthroughs by Dr. Michael Massen-Hane and Dr. Michael Nitzsche, paving the way for emissions reductions that were previously infeasible. Drs. Massen-Hane and Nitzsche have since become co-founders of Solvanic to scale the technology into industry and maximize their climate impacts. 'To deliver on our ambitious low carbon intensity LNG goals, we need to capture carbon dioxide emissions from both our natural gas pretreatment and cogeneration facilities,' said Nick Flores, Chief Executive Officer, Coastal Bend LNG. 'For post-combustion capture on our onsite cogeneration facilities, we need a step change in carbon capture efficiency. We're highly encouraged by Solvanic's preliminary techno-economics and are keen to accelerate their technology readiness with this FEED study.' 'We have demonstrated our EMAR solution to Technology Readiness Level 4 with low energetics, high stability, and modular scalability across emission sources,' said Dr. Michael Nitzsche, Co-Founder and Chief Technology Officer, Solvanic. He added, 'This FEED study accelerates our techno-economic analyses for gas processing and post-combustion carbon capture with the full engineering support of Coastal Bend LNG and their contractors.' 'We are leveraging over a decade of electrochemical carbon capture research and development at MIT via this option agreement. We appreciate Coastal Bend LNG's confidence in the technology to meet their industrial decarbonization objectives,' said Dr. Michael Massen-Hane, Co-Founder and Chief Executive Officer, Solvanic. Importers struggle to resell Canadian canola meal caught in China tariff crossfire
By Naveen Thukral SINGAPORE (Reuters) -Importers are struggling to resell several cargoes of Canadian canola meal that arrived in China after Beijing imposed hefty import tariffs on the protein-rich ingredient, three trade sources said. Up to 400,000 metric tons of canola meal, used mainly in animal feed, is sitting in secure warehouses near Chinese ports, with importers facing a 100% duty if they release the cargoes for sale in the domestic market. "It is not viable to pay the duty, so we are looking at the possibility of re-selling it to other markets, maybe to feed-makers in Southeast Asia or South Korea," said an executive with a trading company that is one of the importers of canola meal. "But it will have to be at a discount," the person said, declining to be named as they were not authorised to speak to media. Traders said the canola meal was being offered at a discount of about 30%. The stuck cargoes underscore the struggles of agricultural companies caught in the middle of trade standoffs, at a time when Washington and Beijing's tariff war has disrupted trade in farm products including soybeans. China on Tuesday announced a preliminary anti-dumping levy of 75.8% on imports of canola oilseed from Canada, escalating a year-long trade dispute that began last August with Ottawa's tariffs on Chinese electric vehicle imports. In March, China imposed a 100% tariff on Canadian rapeseed oil, oil cakes and pea imports. "These measures show how the Chinese government is super angry with the Canadian government," said a trader at a company which runs oilseed processing plants in China. "They suddenly increased the duty to 100% on canola meal, which was not expected." Two of the traders estimated the stranded canola meal volumes at 400,000 tons, while one trader said it was around 200,000 tons. At 400,000 tons, the value of canola meal stuck at Chinese ports is worth around $120 million, traders said.
