With Her New Book, ‘Maggie; or, A Man and a Woman Walk Into a Bar,' Katie Yee Slyly Updates the Divorce Novel

Vogue6 days ago
In Katie Yee's debut novel, Maggie; or, A Man and a Woman Walk Into a Bar, the titular Maggie is two things at once: the white woman Yee's unnamed Chinese-American protagonist has been left for by her partner, Samuel (whom she memorably describes as having 'skin that loosely resembles pale shrimp gaining pink over the stove'), and the name that said protagonist gives to her tumor after discovering that she has breast cancer.
While none of this may sound very funny, Yee manages to spin genuine laughs—not to mention a thoughtful meditation on the meanings of health, love, family, loyalty, and identity—out of her protagonist's pain.
This week, Vogue spoke to Yee about knitting her novel together from two short stories, hanging onto useless-seeming information about exes, taking inspiration from Chinese folklore passed down from her mother and grandmother, and the strangeness of only wanting to read something that mirrors your own experience. The conversation has been edited and condensed.
Vogue: How does it feel to see your book out in the world?
Katie Yee: It feels pretty surreal. I feel like the whole publishing process is such a wild ride. I've had galleys for a while, but it feels so wonderfully strange to see the book in other people's hands. I got a text from a friend the other day that was like, 'I saw someone reading your book across the train platform,' and I was so excited.
What came to you first as you were writing: Maggie the person or Maggie the tumor?
Oh, that's a great question. The novel started out as a short story that just kept getting bigger and bigger and rolling away from me. I think at a separate point, these were two different short stories that kind of grew parallel lives. It wasn't until I was really thinking about it later that I was like, There's a narrator in one that's really funny and resilient, and I kind of want to see what might happen if we make these plot lines converge.
I was so struck by the narrator's Guide to My Husband: A User's Manual. What was that like to put together?
That was really fun. There's this incredible book called 2500 Random Things About Me Too by Matias Viegener that I want to say I read in an experimental fiction class in college, and the whole thing was a riff off of whatever Facebook trend was happening at the time, where the writer was just listing, you know, 'Thing one: I have a dog. Thing two: I live in Brooklyn. Thing three…' And then, over the course of a really long list, it's so interesting to see what recurring questions or themes or arcs kind of arrive. I think putting together the user's manual was a little bit like doing that. I was really caught up in the question of, what do you do when you when you break up with someone, or when someone's no longer in your life, but you have all of this information about them and you know all these granular details about really weird things, like what they're allergic to? Where does that go? That's kind of what I was getting at there.

Houston Breweries Take a Hit in July Restaurant Closings

is an editor for Eater's Texas region. She lives in Dallas, where she's written about James Beard-celebrated and Michelin-recognized restaurants and she loves nachos. While there are many anticipated and new restaurants popping up all over Houston, there are just as many closing. Here are some of the most noteworthy and heartbreaking closings this month. The list is by no means comprehensive. Have information on another closing? Send all tips to houston@ Ginger and Fork This Chinese spot is giving Houstonians a long goodbye — its final service will be on Saturday, October 25. In a Facebook post, the owners wrote, 'After a very intentional deliberation period, we have made the difficult decision not to renew our lease at the end of this year.' The reasons cited include never recovering from staffing shortages during the peak of COVID, and an inability to maintain the standards they want to set as a result. They invite diners in to reminisce over their favorite meals with the staff between now and October 25. Honey Art Cafe The final day for this Heights cafe will be on Sunday, August 24, when its lease expires, its owners announced in an Instagram post. But, this is not goodbye — the cafe will move to a new space. We'll be watching for that reopening announcement. Vuji Cafe Tex-Asian sandwiches didn't quite take off as expected at this cafe, which shared in an Instagram post that it was closing after service on Sunday, July 20. 'Ultimately we have not been able to do the business we needed to do at our current location,' the owners wrote. They will continue to offer catering, do pop-ups, and host live events. The Upside Pub A neighborhood pub, formerly located in Garden Oaks, served its last pint on Saturday, July 5. In an Instagram post, the owners called the reason for the closure 'boring and unimportant.' It opened in the summer of 2022. North Shepherd Brewing This brewery, run by Sam Wright (a well-known brewer in the Houston area who has been at Southern Star Brewing in Conroe and Gristworkz), served its last draft on Saturday, June 28. In a Facebook post, Wright shared the news of the coming closing, not citing a specific reason but writing, 'unfortunately, life has gotten in the way and we can no longer stay open.' The brewery was open for two years. Elder Son Brewing On Thursday, June 19, this brewery took to Instagram to say it was closing both Houston locations. Its final services were on Friday, June 27. The post noted that the closure was permanent and a difficult decision, but no firm reason for closing was shared. Drift Bar It was an abrupt closure for this sports bar, Houstonia reports. After an announcement on its Instagram account, the page was stripped of the Drift Bar name with a post noting that it is closed. Eloise Nichols Following nearly 10 years in business, this River Oaks cafe closed its doors on Sunday, June 29. Co-owner Katie Adair Barnhart told CultureMap Houston that the location's lease was up and she and her partner, Nick Adair, opted not to renew. The pair runs Adair Concepts, which also includes Adair Kitchen, Buffalo Grille, Los Tios, and more. The company would like to reopen Eloise Nichols in the future, but there are no concrete plans about when or where at this time. Mi Tierra Mexican Kitchen The owners of this Tex-Mex spot, which was only open for two years, shared in a Facebook post that it was closing on Wednesday, June 11. Though the specific reason for the closing was not listed, the owner hinted at it being 'just a pause, a redirection.'

'A temple to the people's art': Everything we know about the Lucas Museum of Narrative Art

After decades of shaping galaxies far, far away, George Lucas finally made his debut at San Diego Comic-Con - the annual pop culture mega-event. It was Sunday afternoon when the 81-year-old veteran filmmaker, dressed, in his usual flannel shirt and jeans, stepped on stage at the convention to thunderous applause, with John Williams' iconic score for Star Wars swelling around the hall. But instead of teasing a new film or reviving an old franchise, Lucas was there for something far more personal: to talk about his very own museum. Co-founded with his wife, businesswoman Mellody Hobson, The Lucas Museum of Narrative Art is a passion project that's been decades in the making. Set to open in Los Angeles in 2026, it promises to be a space that reflect Lucas' lifelong obsession with storytelling across genres, eras, and mediums. Related Controversial Princess Leia bikini costume from Star Wars sells at auction for €160,000 Why are Star Wars fans and SAG-AFTRA angry about Fortnite's AI Darth Vader? 'This is sort of a temple to the people's art,' Lucas told the crowd. "(Art) is more about a connection and emotional connection with the work, not how much it cost or what celebrity did it. I don't think it's anything anyone will tell you. If you have emotional connection, it's art. If you don't, just move onto the next painting,' Lucas added. Here's everything that's been revealed about this ambitious project so far: A museum that looks like a starship Designed by visionary architect Ma Yansong, of Chinese architecture firm MAD Architects, the museum's sleek, curved exterior resembles a giant spaceship - an appropriate design for the man who gave us the Millennium Falcon. Once completed, the five-story structure will span 300,000 square feet, making it about the size of a typical IKEA store. It will sit on 11 acres of landscaped green space next to the Los Angeles Memorial Coliseum and the University of Southern California, where Lucas once studied. So what will be inside? While Lucas is adamant that the museum is not a shrine dedicated to Star Wars, fans of the sci-fi franchise will still have plenty to geek out over inside. A sizzle reel, shown exclusively at the panel and narrated by Mace Windu himself, Samuel L. Jackson, previewed a number of Star Wars items that will be on display, including General Grievous's bike, the original landspeeder, and Anakin Skywalker's spaceship from The Phantom Menace. Many of these Star Wars works, also including artworks by legendary concept artist Ralph McQuarrie, will be housed in the museum's cinema gallery. But the scope of the museum goes far beyond a single franchise. Attendees of the panel were shown highlights from Lucas' personal collection, which includes paintings by Mexican icon Frida Kahlo and American painter Norman Rockwell, comic art by R. Crumb and Jack Kirby, and the first character drawing of Flash Gordon from 1934. Other marvels inside the futuristic building will include original Charles Schulz Peanuts strips from the 1950s and '60s, the first pen-and-ink splash page of Black Panther from 1968 and even the original drawing from the first Iron Man comic cover. Aside from expansive gallery space, the museum will also feature two cinemas, classrooms, a library, a restaurant, and a gift shop. The surrounding parkland will remain open to the public. When is the museum set to open? The museum was originally slated for completion in 2021, but the pandemic and the complexity of the build pushed the timeline back. While no specific opening date has been announced, it is set to open it's futuristic doors in 2026. Solve the daily Crossword
