Crypto has killed the weekend: Hedge funds quietly scramble to adapt

Crypto Insight13-06-2025
The always-on crypto market is reshaping global finance, pushing hedge funds and trading firms to look beyond traditional hours and staff desks through the weekend.
Qube Research & Technologies, a global quantitative investment management firm headquartered in London, is hiring for a 'Crypto | Quant Trader (Weekend Shift)' role in London, which requires weekend availability in addition to a four-day workweek.
The role, which includes overseeing continuous crypto trading, monitoring strategy performance and risks and implementing signals and data sets, requires working every other weekend and a normal day shift four days per week.
Unlike traditional financial markets that operate on fixed schedules and close on weekends, the crypto market runs 24/7. There are no closing bells, holidays or after-hours sessions, and price movements can happen at any time, even during weekends.
TradFi firms hire for weekend crypto roles
Other traditional finance firms are also expanding crypto hiring to cover weekends. American high-frequency trading company Virtu Financial is seeking a weekend trader in Singapore to cover digital asset activity outside of weekday trading windows.
Jump Trading's crypto division was looking to hire a weekend trader in Chicago. The position is currently not available, suggesting the company might have found the right candidate.
The rise in weekend crypto roles comes as major hedge funds and trading firms are building crypto teams and infrastructure to operate around the clock.
Brevan Howard's dedicated crypto unit, BH Digital, now boasts dozens of staff, including over 15 portfolio managers, more than 10 data scientists/traders and 20 external engineers supporting its strategies.
Steve Cohen's hedge fund, Point72, is similarly expanding. Its Cubist quant division is hiring a crypto-focused quantitative developer in Paris.
In a March report, CoinShares revealed that seven of the top 10 largest holders of Bitcoin ETF shares are now hedge funds. 'Hedge funds alone now account for 41% of all 13-F Bitcoin ETF holdings, surpassing investment advisers for the first time,' the firm wrote. Crypto remains volatile on weekends
Crypto continues to show volatility during weekends. In April, crypto prices tumbled after a Friday tariff announcement by US President Donald Trump. The decline continued over the weekend, which saw Bitcoin drop 7%, to $77,000 from $83,000.
Crypto markets can also turn extremely volatile during weekends if hacks or breaches occur. With thinner liquidity and limited staffing, exploits timed for late Friday or Saturday can trigger rapid sell-offs, leading to sharp price drops.
While hedge funds are only now hiring for weekend roles, crypto traders have long operated without breaks.
'Weekends are for working. Free time? No such thing, work time. Save your free time for the bear. For now, we grind,' altcoin trader Altcoin Gordon wrote on X.

World Bank approves $650m loan to help Turkey manage disasters and revive economy

The World Bank has approved a $650 million disaster management loan for Turkey, a key step to help the country revive its economy. The loan facility will support the Istanbul Resilience Project, a long-term programme introduced last year and intended to protect economic activity, livelihoods and residents in the country's largest city, the Washington-based lender said in a statement on Friday. World Bank data shows that Istanbul, home to about 15 million people, contributes a third of Turkey's gross domestic product, and any vulnerability from natural disasters, including earthquakes and climate shocks, would impede its progress, it said. 'The project will help to ensure that key public services can function during and after disasters, protect communities, and preserve economic continuity in the event of a major emergency,' the World Bank said. The project has four pillars: emergency preparedness and response, public building resilience, technical assistance and contingent emergency response. The last one, in particular, is dedicated to the rapid reallocation of project funds in the event of an emergency to support urgent recovery and reconstruction needs, the World Bank said. 'This project is vital to safeguard Istanbul's people and economy,' said Humberto Lopez, the World Bank's country director for Turkey. 'By strengthening emergency preparedness, modernising public infrastructure and supporting community resilience, Turkey is building a safer future for one of its most strategic provinces,' he added. Turkey has embarked on a major economic revival programme following years of flagging activity, including battling chronic inflation in 2024. Ankara has made moves to implement an turnaround, including raising interest rates to tame inflation – which have since steadily gone down – creating a new economic team and appointing a new central bank chief. Maintaining or building new infrastructure will be central to the economic plan: the World Bank said that with Istanbul's public building stock ageing and emergency response capacity under strain, 'this investment will help ensure faster and more effective disaster response while strengthening infrastructure against seismic and climate hazards'. 'Ultimately, the project aims to protect millions of people and ensure the continuity of vital services across Istanbul,' it said. This week, Turkish and Syrian business leaders convened to strengthen economic ties, with the head of the newly re-established Syria-Turkey Business Council saying that any fears about co-operation should be set aside in order to reap mutual benefits. In May, Turkey said it was seeking more UAE investment in artificial intelligence amid a strengthening of relations between the two countries. Turkey has also received credit rating upgrades from major agencies – including Moody's first such move in a decade – as they acknowledged the impact of the government's rebalanced economic strategy, improved governance and the tight monetary stance that has helped stabilise the nation's economy.

Ukraine to weigh bill regulating crypto market in late August

Ukraine's parliament plans to conduct the initial reading of a crypto regulation bill by late August, according to government officials. The legislation, if approved, could establish a legal framework for digital assets aligned with European standards. 'The preparation of a draft law on taxation of transactions with virtual assets is currently in the final stage,' Danylo Hetmantsev, head of the parliamentary committee on finance, tax and customs policy, told Cointelegraph. 'It is estimated that its submission for the first reading in the Verkhovna Rada is scheduled for the end of August 2025.' A key provision in the bill is the ability for individuals to come forward and legalize previously acquired digital assets. Under the regulation, holders seeking to legalize assets would pay a 5% personal income tax and 5% military duty, Hetmantsev reportedly said. Ukraine has a history of regulatory starts and stops pertaining to the crypto industry. In 2022, the Verkhovna Rada, the country's unicameral parliament, passed legislation legalizing crypto exchanges. However, progress on taxing crypto transactions has been slow. In December 2024, the government disclosed plans for new legislation that would tax cryptocurrency trading similarly to securities, applying taxes when assets are converted into fiat currency. In April 2025, Ukraine's financial regulator proposed taxing certain crypto transactions at a rate of up to 23% but left room for excluding crypto-to-crypto and stablecoins transactions. Ukraine follows other countries with taxation and reserve bills In another crypto effort, legislators introduced in June a bill to allow the National Bank of Ukraine to include cryptocurrencies such as Bitcoin in its reserve. The plan was announced in May at a conference in Kyiv. According to Ukraine is the fourth-largest holder of Bitcoin among governments, with 46,351 BTC worth $5.4 billion at this writing. If signed into law, the legislation would place the country among the few jurisdictions with a codified cryptocurrency reserve. US President Donald Trump signed an executive order creating a strategic Bitcoin reserve in the country on March 6, while Kazakhstan announced plans to form a similar crypto reserve on June 30. Crypto activity has surged in Eastern Europe, with the region receiving $499 billion worth of crypto flows between July 2023 and June 2024. Source:

VC Roundup: Bitcoin DeFi surges, but tokenization and stablecoins gain steam

The crypto venture capital landscape has made a decisive pivot back to Bitcoin, driven largely by its growing success as an institutional asset. At the same time, Bitcoin treasury companies are injecting billions into the market by acquiring BTC for long-term strategic reserves. Inveniam partners with Mantra to drive institutional RWA adoption in the UAE and US Decentralized data infrastructure provider Inveniam Capital has invested $20 million in layer-1 blockchain Mantra to bring institutional-grade real-world assets (RWAs) to the blockchain, complete with asset reporting and surveillance. The companies say the partnership could significantly boost total value locked (TVL) on Mantra Chain and promote compliant tokenization at a time when RWA adoption is expanding rapidly. As part of the deal, Inveniam will integrate data sovereignty and asset surveillance capabilities into the Mantra blockchain, enabling more advanced DeFi applications and regulatory-grade transparency. The partnership aims to expand institutional access to RWA ecosystems in both the United States and the United Arab Emirates. Inveniam cited industry research projecting the RWA market could reach a $18.9 trillion valuation within a decade, according to Boston Consulting Group. Other estimates suggest the opportunity could be as high as $30 trillion as more traditional financial institutions enter the space.
