Craters, dust clouds: Why ride on office hub's roads is a pain

Time of India27-04-2025
Gurgaon: Commuters in Udyog Vihar face daily challenges navigating through broken roads, dust and uneven surfaces. The industrial hub's internal roads, particularly from phases 1 to 5, are riddled with deep potholes, affecting thousands of office-goers and factory workers.
Heavy truck movement has exacerbated the damage, raising concerns about worsening conditions during the coming monsoon, yet repair work has not been carried out.
"It is impossible to drive here without damaging the car. The roads were bad last year too, but now they are non-motorable," said Ashwini Maurya, who works as a supervisor in a textile company in Phase 2.
Apoorv Agrawal, who works in Phase 4, said, "I travel from Sector 30 every day, and the moment I enter Udyog Vihar, the bumpy ride starts. Vehicles slow down as they try to evade potholes. Some of the streets are not even properly lit. As a result, it becomes difficult to see the potholes, especially at night."

Industrialists said that repeated assurances from authorities to address the issue have not resulted in concrete action. Udyog Vihar is home to over 2,500 factories and office complexes, including units from the IT & ITeS, textile, automobile and pharmaceutical sectors across five phases.
Basic infrastructure has not been prioritised, they said
Parveen Yadav, president of the Gurgaon Udyog Association, said they have been raising the issue for the last two years. "Udyog Vihar contributes substantial revenue to the govt., yet essential infrastructure like roads is missing. We have raised this concern several times, but only patchwork repairs are carried out. Some roads are beyond patchwork repair and need recarpeting. Authorities need to take up the issue urgently, but no compromise should be made on quality," he said.
An official from the
Haryana State Industrial and Infrastructure Development Corporation
(HSIIDC) said the matter is being addressed. "We initiated the tendering process last year but got delayed due to the imposition of the model code of conduct. Now, the tendering process for recarpeting of roads from phases 1 to 5 has been completed. We are in the final stages of allotting the work, and work is expected to start soon," said Arun Garg, deputy general manager of HSIIDC.

PU identifies 4,000 day scholar vehicles, only 150 register for stickers ahead of student polls

Chandigarh: Panjab University has identified close to 4,000 vehicles belonging to day scholars through departmental data, but only around 150 have registered for QR-based parking stickers so far. With student council polls scheduled in the first week of September, the university has decided to speed up the process and has set August 25 as the deadline for students to get the stickers. Officials said the stickers would be linked with departmental data to ensure that only genuine students could bring four-wheelers on the campus. The move is aimed at tightening checks on outsiders, whose entry has been a persistent concern during elections. "We are ready with stickers and all arrangements. We also have a team in place to link the stickers with departmental data. However, students need to register, and departments need to make them do it. Unless that happens, the system won't work as intended," said the dean, student welfare. Authorities pointed out that the stickers would also make it easier for security staff at the gates to manage vehicle entry. Cars without stickers will be stopped and asked to explain their purpose of visit, and gate staff have been instructed to keep stricter vigil in the days leading up to the polls. by Taboola by Taboola Sponsored Links Sponsored Links Promoted Links Promoted Links You May Like Cardiologist: Pink Salt Is The Enemy of Body Fat (See How To Use) GoldenEraCoverage Undo The QR-based system, designed by PU's own students and priced at Rs 50 per sticker, was launched earlier this year. It was projected as a digital solution to regulate vehicle entry, manage parking space, and curb the problem of outsiders driving in with ease. After the launch, the initiative ran into repeated troubles—first because departments were slow in sharing data of their enrolled students, and now because of poor response from students. With departmental data now available, officials said the onus is on students to ensure that the system actually takes off. A senior official added that once the August 25 deadline passes, only vehicles with valid stickers will be allowed entry, while others will be questioned at the gates. The regulation will later be extended to hostellers and employees as well. Separately, student party PSU, Lalkaar raised the demand that the university be made a completely vehicle-free campus, arguing that the presence of four-wheelers has given rise to incidents of boys, including outsiders, following and harassing women students. University officials maintain that the sticker system's success in the coming weeks will be critical, not just for managing the rush during student polls but also for building a long-term, credible mechanism to check unauthorised entry into the campus. Now, mobile number must for vehicle registration, licence

Ahmedabad: Following a directive from the ministry of road transport, the state govt has made it compulsory for all driving licence (DL) holders and vehicle owners to either link or update their mobile numbers in the official transport database. This process must be completed through Aadhaar authentication to ensure better communication and improved access to transport-related services. Henceforth, to make changes to the driving licence or vehicle registration booklet, individuals can visit the official Vahan and Sarathi portals and add or update their mobile numbers. "This will ensure that the individual's address on Aadhaar card and driving licence are the same. However, for those who have a different address or name on their Aadhaar card, there will be the option of getting the same updated at the RTO office," a govt official said. State transport department has also been sending messages to DL holders and vehicle owners urging them to update their details. The officials stated that to change the address on a driving licence, renew a licence, obtain a duplicate licence, or add a vehicle, the mobile number must be updated. by Taboola by Taboola Sponsored Links Sponsored Links Promoted Links Promoted Links You May Like American Investor Warren Buffett Recommends: 5 Books For Turning Your Life Around Blinkist: Warren Buffett's Reading List Undo Similarly, when it comes to the vehicle registration certificate, even for clearing hypothecation or obtaining a duplicate RC book or selling the vehicle, the mobile number will first have to be updated. China extends probe into EU dairy products as trade tussle goes on

China extended on Monday its anti-subsidy investigation into European Union dairy imports by six months, one front in a wider trade war with Brussels and Washington. Trade tensions between China and the EU erupted in 2023 when the European Commission - which oversees the bloc's trade policy - launched an anti-subsidy investigation into Chinese-made electric vehicles. China subsequently started investigations into imports of EU brandy, pork and dairy products - widely seen as retaliation for Europe's EV move. by Taboola by Taboola Sponsored Links Sponsored Links Promoted Links Promoted Links You May Like Elegant New Scooters For Seniors In 2024: The Prices May Surprise You Mobility Scooter | Search Ads Learn More Undo For dairy products, China's Ministry of Commerce said it had prolonged the period of its anti-subsidy investigation to February 21, 2026, citing the complexity of the case, which covers some EU cheese, milk and cream products. Beijing had rolled over in June an anti-dumping investigation into European pork, of which it is also a major buyer, while in July it announced duties on EU brandy producers - though major cognac makers were spared provided they sell at or above a minimum price. Live Events The extension of the year-old dairy probe had been expected given that more technical visits by Chinese officials were already scheduled for early September, said Alexander Anton, secretary general of the European Dairy Association , which represents the industry at EU level. The EU dairy sector is not anticipating the type of settlement reached for brandy, given the latter's different structure as an industry led by a small number of big firms, Anton added. In France, producers are hoping for a political resolution of the EV issue to avoid duties that could hit French dairy exports to China worth around 650 million euros ($759 million) a year, Francois-Xavier Huard, CEO of industry association FNIL, said. In April, a European Commission spokesperson said the EU and China had agreed to look into setting minimum prices of Chinese-made EVs, instead of tariffs imposed by the EU last year. The two sides have yet to reach a deal. "Beijing is still hoping to come to terms with the EU on a long list of trade conflicts," said Even Rogers Pay, an analyst at Beijing-based Trivium China who specialises in agriculture. "This investigation - along with the investigation into EU pork - are significant bargaining chips in the ongoing negotiations around the EU's tariffs on Chinese new energy vehicles," she said.
