Craters, dust clouds: Why ride on office hub's roads is a pain

Time of India27-04-2025

Gurgaon: Commuters in Udyog Vihar face daily challenges navigating through broken roads, dust and uneven surfaces. The industrial hub's internal roads, particularly from phases 1 to 5, are riddled with deep potholes, affecting thousands of office-goers and factory workers.
Heavy truck movement has exacerbated the damage, raising concerns about worsening conditions during the coming monsoon, yet repair work has not been carried out.
"It is impossible to drive here without damaging the car. The roads were bad last year too, but now they are non-motorable," said Ashwini Maurya, who works as a supervisor in a textile company in Phase 2.
Apoorv Agrawal, who works in Phase 4, said, "I travel from Sector 30 every day, and the moment I enter Udyog Vihar, the bumpy ride starts. Vehicles slow down as they try to evade potholes. Some of the streets are not even properly lit. As a result, it becomes difficult to see the potholes, especially at night."

Industrialists said that repeated assurances from authorities to address the issue have not resulted in concrete action. Udyog Vihar is home to over 2,500 factories and office complexes, including units from the IT & ITeS, textile, automobile and pharmaceutical sectors across five phases.
Basic infrastructure has not been prioritised, they said
Parveen Yadav, president of the Gurgaon Udyog Association, said they have been raising the issue for the last two years. "Udyog Vihar contributes substantial revenue to the govt., yet essential infrastructure like roads is missing. We have raised this concern several times, but only patchwork repairs are carried out. Some roads are beyond patchwork repair and need recarpeting. Authorities need to take up the issue urgently, but no compromise should be made on quality," he said.
An official from the
Haryana State Industrial and Infrastructure Development Corporation
(HSIIDC) said the matter is being addressed. "We initiated the tendering process last year but got delayed due to the imposition of the model code of conduct. Now, the tendering process for recarpeting of roads from phases 1 to 5 has been completed. We are in the final stages of allotting the work, and work is expected to start soon," said Arun Garg, deputy general manager of HSIIDC.

Commuters celebrate ease of travelling on new double-decker flyover on Ashok Rajpath

Patna: City's long-snarled Ashok Rajpath is finally breathing easy. With the inauguration of the much-awaited double-decker flyover, one of the city's busiest and most congested stretches has witnessed a dramatic transformation. Once synonymous with bumper-to-bumper traffic and blaring horns, the arterial road — connecting key educational institutions, hospitals, markets, and residential pockets — is now seeing smoother rides, shorter travel times, and happier commuters. From e-rickshaw drivers and fruit sellers to students and shopkeepers, the city's residents are hailing the new flyover as a game changer in the city's daily life and mobility. Pintu Yadav, an e-rickshaw driver, said, "I have been driving an e-rickshaw for more than three years, apart from Sundays, there was not a single day that I travelled without facing any congestion. For a single trip from Kargil Chowk to Mahendru, it took more than 45 minutes, and so I used to make only three round trips throughout the day. Besides, the vehicle got discharged. But today, I covered the stretch in only 15 minutes. by Taboola by Taboola Sponsored Links Sponsored Links Promoted Links Promoted Links You May Like Classic Solitaire , Built for Desktop Play Solitaire Download Undo I can take more trips, get more passengers, and earn more money." An owner of a general store, Mohd Raju, said the goods vehicle reached on time and left after delivering the items without causing any congestion or problems for commuters. "There is enough space under the flyover for parking. The new structure is good from a business perspective," he said. Moh Islam, a fruit seller at Sabzibagh, said, "When people used to stop their cars to buy fruits, it would cause a traffic jam, but now that's not the case. People can now shop comfortably without facing any traffic jams and the noise of horns." Youths, especially students, are more elated by the opening of the flyover as several colleges of Patna University, NIT-Patna, many reputed schools, libraries, and hostels and lodges are on this route. Akansha, a student of BN College, said she lives in Patna City and now travelling has become easier for her after the opening of tier-1, which is between Patna College and BN College. "From PMCH to Bishop House, there is often a traffic jam. Now, I can avoid this and reach the college on time. Earlier, I had to leave the house early, but now 20 minutes are enough to reach the college," she said. "I am a student of Patna College and have lived near Khazanchi Road for two years. Every day I faced traffic snarls. The situation today was completely different. There was no unnecessary honking and congestion. I have seen that people are easily reaching PMCH without any trouble," said Raman Agarwal, a student.

Indian auto delegation gears up to visit China to expedite supply of rare earth magnets

A delegation of auto industry representatives is gearing up for a China visit to expedite the import of rare earth magnets to Indian entities, as per the industry sources. Around 40-50 company executives have received visa approval but still await a go-ahead from the Chinese commerce ministry for a meeting regarding the matter. "Around 40-50 executives, representing both auto OEMs and component firms, have received visas and are now awaiting a go-ahead from China's Ministry of Commerce for a meeting," an industry source stated. by Taboola by Taboola Sponsored Links Sponsored Links Promoted Links Promoted Links You May Like The Top 25 Most Beautiful Women In The World Car Novels Undo No approvals have been granted so far, another source added. The domestic auto industry is forced to take steps as the Chinese government has put restrictions since April 4 on the export of rare earth elements and related magnets. Live Events China has mandated special export licences for seven rare earth elements and related magnets. The country controls over 90 per cent of the global processing capacity for magnets, used across sectors, including automobiles, home appliances and clean energy. With no clarity on approvals, the Indian automobile industry is staring at production issues, especially for electric vehicles. The country's largest carmaker Maruti Suzuki India is recalibrating production of its upcoming model e-VITARA due to the shortage of rare earth magnets, industry sources said. The auto major is looking to produce around 8,000 units of the model by September against the earlier stated plan of rolling out over 26,000 units during the period. The company, however, plans to make up for the production dip in the subsequent months with a stated target to produce around 67,000 units of the model this fiscal, the sources said. The domestic automobile industry has also sought government support in expediting approvals from China to import rare earth magnets. The critical materials include samarium, gadolinium, terbium, dysprosium and lutetium, which are essential in electric motors, braking systems, smartphones and missile technology. Rare earth magnets are integral to permanent magnet synchronous motors (PMSMs) used in EVs for high torque, energy efficiency and compact size. Hybrids also depend on them for efficient propulsion. In internal combustion engine (ICE) vehicles, the use of rare earth magnets is largely limited to electric power steering and other motorised systems. Crisil Ratings has noted that rare earth magnets, which are low in cost but critical in function, could emerge as a key supply-side risk for India's automotive sector if China's export restrictions and delays in shipment clearances persist. While most automakers currently have 4-6 weeks of inventory, prolonged delays could start affecting vehicle production, with EV models facing deferrals or rescheduling from July 2025, it stated. A broader impact on two-wheelers and ICE PVs may follow if the supply bottlenecks persist for an extended period. In April this year, China, the world's dominant exporter of rare earth magnets, imposed export restrictions on seven rare earth elements and finished magnets, mandating export licences. The revised framework demands detailed end-use disclosures and client declarations, including confirmation that the products will not be used in defence or re-exported to the US. India, which sourced over 80 per cent of its 540 tonnes of magnet imports from China last fiscal, has started to feel the impact. By May 2025, nearly 30 import requests from Indian companies were endorsed by the Indian government, but are yet to be approved by the Chinese authorities, and no shipments have arrived.
