Gareth Southgate ‘not missing' managing England, cites pressure of the job

New York Times7 hours ago

Gareth Southgate said he is 'not missing' managing England's national team, citing the pressure of the role he vacated in July 2024.
Southgate, 54, stepped down as England's head coach following the 2-1 European championship final defeat to Spain last summer. He received a knighthood on Wednesday for his services to football, which includes an eight-year spell in charge of England, during which time he led the nation to two European finals and a World Cup semi-final, while he was also involved with the youth set-up for five years.

'It is a little bit strange [not managing England] but also I'm not missing it,' Southgate told BBC Sport. 'I think it's important that I am on that sofa and out of their way, you know. It's theirs to take on now and I think it's important that I give the team as much space as possible.'
Southgate and members of his squad regularly responded to criticism over their style of play despite deep runs into major tournaments, and the former head coach said it was 'hard to describe' just the weight of expectation he had carried until he left the role.
'Until that weight's gone you don't necessarily realise just on a day-to-day basis, you know, every hour of my day was thinking about how do I make England better, what's happening with the players, how do we do things differently,' he said.
Thomas Tuchel was appointed as his successor and the German coach was critical of England's perceived lack of 'excitement and hunger' at Euro 2024. Southgate said he did not feel it 'important' to discuss his reaction to Tuchel's comments.
'I think what's really important is for me to give the team, the manager, the space to operate,' Southgate said.
Southgate is the fourth England manager to receive a knighthood, following Sir Walter Winterbottom, Sir Alf Ramsey and Sir Bobby Robson.

Stewart trumps Green as Aussies shine in county drama

An English county championship match with a distinct Aussie flavour has ended in an enthralling draw in the seaside town of Blackpool after two very special tons and an inspired wicket-taking burst from among the green-and-gold contingent. In his first county match as Lancashire skipper, 42-year-old legend Jimmy Anderson also played his part in a remarkable second-division match in which a quartet of Australians all starred. Pride of place went to Grant Stewart, an Australian with an Italian background who has earned his spurs at Kent as a crowd-pleasing, fast-bowling allrounder. Grant Stewart's magnificent 130 from only 122 deliveries today saw him pass 2️⃣0️⃣0️⃣0️⃣ First-Class Kent Grant 👏🇮🇹 — Kent Cricket (@KentCricket) June 25, 2025 This time he went ballistic at No.9 as Kent fought to save the match against a Lancashire side helped to a massive 9-639 declared in large part thanks to a county debut innings of 154 on Tuesday from West Australian Ashton Turner (11 fours, six sixes). As Kent, 265 runs behind, knuckled down to try to save the match on Wednesday, Lancashire's Australian offspinning allrounder Chris Green put them on the rack, grabbing four wickets, including three victims in just 15 balls, as the visitors slumped to 5-84. But with defeat looking inevitable at 7-116, Stewart teamed up for an amazing, counter-attacking eighth-wicket partnership with Joey Evison to save the day. Deciding attack was the best form of defence, Stewart went on the rampage either side of tea, going to his 50 off 42 balls by smiting three big sixes. Less than 45 minutes later he had scorched his way to a 79-ball hundred, featuring eight sixes and nine fours. The Kalgoorlie-born Stewart, who is not deemed an "overseas player'' because he has a European Union passport through his Italian mother, had in May played an even more destructive innings at No.8, plundering 182 against Gloucestershire at Bristol. This time he and Evison smashed 182 together - an eighth-wicket record for Kent against Lancashire - only for the Aussie to fall to Anderson for 130 (122 balls, 12 fours, nine sixes) with safety having not yet been quite achieved. Step forward another Aussie, Wes Agar, who got them to the draw with his 21 not out alongside Evision's unbeaten 77 as Kent finished on 8-328. Green picked up 4-104. Another Australian batter who enjoyed the introduction of the Kookaburra ball to the county season was Gloucestershire captain Cameron Bancroft, whose mammoth knock of 176 against Derbyshire at Bristol followed his first-innings 58. His monumental second-innings effort, which was ended for the addition of just six runs to his overnight total, had spanned nearly seven and three-quarter hours and 366 balls, and helped him set Derbyshire a victory target of 316 in a minimum of 67 overs. Derbyshire went for broke early, with their Tasmanian opener Caleb Jewell cracking 83 off 80 balls in a 177-run first-wicket partnership with Harry Came (91), who just missed out on his second ton of the match. Australian Test spinner Todd Murphy bowled 58 overs and took five wickets in the match (3-120 and 2-114), which finished in a compelling draw with Derbyshire on 8-296, just 20 short of their target.

UCLA's Mick Cronin hires former player David Singleton as an assistant coach

LOS ANGELES (AP) — David Singleton, who played five seasons for UCLA, is returning to Westwood as an assistant coach under Mick Cronin. Singleton spent the last two years playing in the NBA G League with the Atlanta Hawks' affiliate in Georgia. Advertisement He helped UCLA reach the NCAA Tournament Final Four in 2021. He also helped the Bruins make the tournament in 2022 and in 2023, when they made the Sweet 16. As a fifth-year senior, Singleton and the Bruins won the Pac-12 regular-season title. Singleton set the school record for most games played with 164 while playing a fifth year allowed by the NCAA because of the COVID-19 pandemic. He ranks third on the career list for 3-pointers made with 219. He averaged 5.7 points and 1.8 rebounds during his career. 'He's always had his eye on becoming a coach, and we are thrilled that we can add him to our staff,' Cronin said in a statement Wednesday. Juventus Willing to Offer £35M-Rated PSG, Tottenham-Linked Attacker for Man Utd Outcast

Juventus' Dušan Vlahović could be on the way out with rumors over the last few months linking him to AC Milan, PSG, and Tottenham Hotspur. With one year left on his current contract, the Old Lady want to ensure they don't lose him on a free transfer. CaughtOffside previously reported that the French club began tracking the Serbian international earlier this year, and with his price tag becoming more manageable, a summer move was starting to look realistic. Advertisement Arsenal and Manchester United were also previously reported to be monitoring Vlahović closely, setting up the possibility of a bidding war. With just one year left on his contract, Juventus appeared more willing to sell rather than risk losing him for nothing in 2026. Could Tottenham, PSG target be involved in swap deal? MARCO BERTORELLO/AFP via Getty Images Gazzetta dello Sport reports that Juventus are prepared to offer Dušan Vlahović as part of a swap deal with Manchester United for Jadon Sancho. TBR Football's chief correspondent Graeme Bailey recently shared that intermediaries have sounded out several Premier League clubs about Dušan Vlahović. However, despite the interest from England, the striker appears more likely to remain in Italy. Advertisement 'There is interest in England in Vlahovic, but I can confirm no offers are on the table in the Premier League for him, as yet,' Bailey told TBR. 'There was a suspicion amongst the clubs that he was waiting for other interest, and now something has come up at Milan with Allegri's move to the club. 'I am told that, as it stands, they are firm favourites for Vlahović, but that could change. If that does happen, then we could see Premier League interest materialise, but at this point it has not.' A previous report from GIVE ME SPORT says Tottenham might have a chance to sign Vlahović at a bargain price this summer. Juventus are said to be willing to let the Serbian striker go for as little as £20 million, as he continues to struggle to find his best form. While Juventus would prefer closer to £35 million, they understand they may have to accept a lower fee to move him on. The club is actively seeking a buyer, which could potentially lower the price if Tottenham or another team makes a serious offer.
