Cops were called to the scene following reports that human remains had been found at the popular beach.
One witness told The Scottish Sun: "I was walking along the beach early on Tuesday morning when I came across a leg bone.
"It was buried under some seaweed. It was just a bone with the sock and shoe still on it."
Police are continuing to probe the incident in order to establish the full circumstances.
It is not yet known whether the remains belong to a man or woman, or how long they may have been in the water.
A Police Scotland spokesperson said: 'Around 10.45am on Tuesday, 10 June, 2025, we received a report that human remains had been discovered on Prestwick Beach.
'Enquiries are ongoing to establish the full circumstances.'
Elsewhere, a major update has been issued on the search for a passenger feared to have fallen overboard from a Scots ferry.
A large-scale police and coastguard rescue mission was launched yesterday afternoon in the Firth of Clyde.
Concerns were raised amid claims that a customer fell from a boat.
It is reported to have happened while the Western Ferries service was travelling between Dunoon, Argyll, and Gourock in Inverclyde.
A 64-year-old man was reported missing from the ferry at around 1.40pm on Sunday.

Renfrewshire Council can now call upon app to tackle antisocial behaviour in area
The technology allows users to collect and submit noise recordings, diary sheets and videos. Renfrewshire Council can now call upon an app as a tool for its tenants to report antisocial behaviour (ASB) after a pilot took place earlier this year. The technology – which allows users to collect and submit noise recordings, diary sheets and videos – is not intended as a standalone measure but to bolster other resources. Evidence could be used to strengthen investigations but the council has stressed it is not a replacement for the agencies that are available to tackle the problem. A report to next Tuesday's communities and housing policy board provided an update on the initiative and explained how it is likely to be used. It said: "The ASB App is a digital method of reporting and recording antisocial behaviour in real time and offers an additional means of reporting, particularly outwith office hours. "This is not a standalone tool but is intended to complement existing resources and appropriate evidence can be used to strengthen investigations nor is it a replacement for agencies that are available to witness and tackle antisocial behaviour in the communities e.g. Police Scotland, community safety wardens, noise enforcement officers. "Housing services, following the initial pilot, can now offer use of the antisocial behaviour app (the ASB app) to our tenants across Renfrewshire. Cases are assessed on an individual basis with strict criteria applied for use of the app. "Housing officers will consider whether there are ongoing issues that have been slow to resolve, whether the layout of the building would restrict the number of potential witnesses and if neighbours are unwilling to offer corroboration, for a variety of reasons." Each of the area housing teams has a trained "super-user" who will support council officers using the app. Guidance has been issued on criteria, managing expectations and handling audio and visual images. The report added: "As the local housing area teams are now using the ASB app at an operational level, the council's website has been updated to reflect this, thus ensuring we are being transparent and using the system overtly. "A demonstration of the ASB app for elected members will be September 8."

Former world snooker champion Graeme Dott faces trial for child sex abuse
The former world snooker champion Graeme Dott is to stand trial next year over allegations of child sex abuse. The 48-year-old is accused of two charges relating to primary school age children. The allegations span between 1993 and 1996 involving a girl, and 2006 to 2010 involving a boy, both in the Glasgow region. A virtual hearing at the high court in Glasgow on Thursday was told Dott, who was not present, denies the charges. Defending, Euan Dow said: 'He pleads not guilty to two charges on the indictment. The position of the accused is that the allegations are fabricated and there is no truth in any of them.' A trial date was set for 17 August next year at the same court and bail was continued. Dott won the 2006 World Snooker Championship and was runner-up in 2004 and 2010.

Austin Ironside: Tributes to 'always smiling' 25-year-old - as suspect appears in court charged with murder and robbery
A suspect has appeared in court charged with murder and robbery following the death of a young man in Aberdeen. Austin Ironside, 25, was found injured in the city's Skene Street at about 3.10pm on Sunday 3 August. He was taken to Aberdeen Royal Infirmary, where he died two days later. Police Scotland arrested and charged Scott Adams, 46, in connection with the "suspicious" death. Adams appeared before Aberdeen Sheriff Court on Thursday where he made no plea to the charge of murder and robbery. The suspect, from Aberdeen, was remanded in custody and is due back in the dock within the next eight days. Following Mr Ironside's death, his family said: "Austin was popular, with friends across the city, and would do anything to help others. "He was always smiling and his infectious laugh brought light into the lives of everyone who knew him. "We are all devastated by what has happened and would like privacy at this terrible time." The probe continues and is being led by detectives from Police Scotland's Major Investigation Team. A force spokesperson said enquiries remain ongoing and officers are "following a positive line of enquiry".
