Receiver spokesperson: Divinity eviction notice serves, Monroe's sold, Wintergarden in negotiations

ROCHESTER, N.Y. (WROC) — The fates of three prominent Katherine Mott-owned event spaces in the Rochester area are becoming clearer.
Thursday, a lawyer representing the court-appointed receiver in the check-kiting case against Katherine Mott — which was filed in March 2024 — said that Divinity Estate & Chapel has been served an eviction notice, telling the company to vacate, dated January 29.
It is unclear if the business has vacated as of Thursday. News 8 has reached out to Mott and has not heard back yet. The website listed on the venue's Facebook page is no longer working.

The spokesperson for the receiver also tells News 8 that Monroe's has been sold, and The Wintergarden is currently in negotiations. A more detailed filing that is expected in the coming weeks.
In March 2024, the prominent local business owner has been accused of stealing nearly $20 million in a check-kiting scheme.
The lawsuit alleged that since February 2024, Mott began 'kiting' checks: using multiple accounts at First Star Bank and others, to artificially inflate the balance of those banks accounts.

In December of 2024, Mott pleaded guilty to financial institution fraud and money laundering.
The charges come with a maximum penalty of 30 years in prison and a fine of $1 million, but the as part of the plea agreement, the defense and prosecution are recommending a sentencing range of 78 to 97 months, with a fine of $25,000 to $250,000. Mott can argue for an even lower sentence before a judge, who still has the ultimate authority.
Following the initial lawsuit, the courts appointed a receiver to balance Mott's books, to recover as much of the missing money as possible, and to make sure the businesses continued to run as long as possible.

Minnesota politician and husband shot dead in 'politically motivated assassination' - second politician and wife wounded

A manhunt is underway after a US politician and her husband were shot and killed in their home in a "politically motivated assassination" - and another politician and his wife were also shot. Minnesota state representative Melissa Hortman and her husband were killed at their homes, Tim Walz, the governor of Minnesota, confirmed. State senator John Hoffman and his wife were also shot in their home but are expected to survive. The suspect was reportedly posing as a police officer, and officials said the alleged attacker escaped after an exchange of gunfire. Both politicians are members of the Minnesota Democratic-Farmer-Labor Party. Authorities have since urged residents of the Champlin and Brooklyn Park areas to stay in their homes. In an earlier Facebook post, Mr Walz said: "I've been briefed this morning on an ongoing situation involving targeted shootings in Champlin and Brooklyn Park. "The Minnesota Department of Public Safety and local law enforcement are on the scene. We will share more information soon." At a subsequent press conference, Mr Waltz said: "We must all, in Minnesota and across the country, stand against all forms of political violence. "Those responsible for this will be held accountable." Post-mortem examinations will be conducted to determine the extent of their injuries. However, it is clear that both Ms Hortman and her spouse died from gunshot wounds, Drew Evans, superintendent of the Bureau of Criminal Apprehension said. Ms Hortman was first elected in 2004 - and was the top house Democratic leader in the state legislature. She also served as speaker of the Minnesota House of Representatives. Mr Hoffman, also a Democrat, was first elected in 2012 - and ran a consulting firm called Hoffman Strategic Advisors. Hakeem Jeffries, House Democratic leader, has described the shootings as "deeply disturbing" on X, adding that "violence is never acceptable", and that he is "praying hard" for the breaking news story is being updated and more details will be published shortly. Wedding bid blocked at 'dignified' coastal venue

A landmark described as "seemly and dignified" by planning inspectors has been denied permission to host weddings. Fort Perch Rock, a coastal defence in New Brighton which dates back to just after the Napoleonic wars, is home to a cafe bar, function rooms and exhibitions. Its owners wanted to use it to hold marriage ceremonies, but a lack of disabled access to its upper floors meant its bid was denied by Wirral Council. Owner Douglas Darroch told planners on Friday he "could have turned [it] into a casino or a strip club but that is disrespectful to the building", adding: "We are trying to find ways to generate cash to take the building forward." Mr Darroch added that people had asked in the past about using the venue for weddings. He said: "It's part of our business plan to bring life to the building which we are trying to do now... with the escape room, cafe, and the museum opening next year." Councillors raised concerns about the walkway into the fort, disability access and fire risk management. The building, which is 32 ft (9m) high, was completed in 1829 and is due to celebrate the 200th anniversary of its foundation stone being laid next year.
