When it comes to national security, I stand firm beyond politics: TMC's Abhishek Banerjee in Singapore
Singapore City [Singapore], May 28 (ANI): Trinamool Congress (TMC) MP Abhishek Banerjee has emphasised that national security and sovereignty transcend political differences.
Speaking on the opposition's stance, Banerjee said, 'Where I might differ with the ruling dispensation or the political party, I will fight with them tooth and nail. But when it comes to the national security of my country, I will stand firmly and serve towards what is in the best interest of my nation. I will not let my political interests come in the way of my national interest.'
Banerjee further pointed out evidence of cross-border terror support, highlighting the presence of high-ranking Pakistani military officials at funerals of labelled terrorists.
'You have so much evidence in the public domain where you see high-ranking Pakistani military general officials attending the funeral of labelled terrorists, where else do you see this? I mean, what else can we offer you as evidence?' he questioned.
TMC MP Abhishek Banerjee highlighted the power of social media in spreading key messages on national security, saying it moves faster than traditional diplomacy.
Echoing the importance of strong connections, Indian High Commissioner Shilpak Ambule marked 60 years of India-Singapore ties, reflecting deepening relations in a fast-changing world.
Speaking about the significance of this year, which also marks Singapore's 60th anniversary, Ambule pointed to key high-level engagements, including President Tharman Shanmugaratnam's state visit to India in January.
While speaking to ANI, Ambule said, 'India and Singapore are celebrating 60 years of diplomatic ties this year. It is also Singapore's 60th birthday. President Tharman Shanmugaratnam paid a very successful state visit to India in January. We do expect some more high-level visits to take place later in the year. We have a very unique mechanism with Singapore called the India-Singapore Ministerial Roundtable, where 10 ministers meet every year. They have identified six pillars of collaboration -- collaboration in digital space, skilling, health, maritime and air connectivity, advanced manufacturing and sustainability.'
Ambule further underscored the expanding collaboration, particularly in the defence and security sectors.
He added, 'Last year also marked the 10 years of our strategic partnership, so we felt that the relationship has grown so much and so widespread and deep that we need to elevate it to a comprehensive strategic partnership and we are also doing a lot in the defence and security space and that is the understated part of the relationship. There are also areas of collaboration, and different sectors are ongoing.'
The party delegation to Singapore was led by JD-U MP Sanjay Kumar Jha, including Aparajita Sarangi (BJP), TMC MP Abhishek Banerjee, Brij Lala (BJP), John Brittas (CPI-M), Pradan Baruah (BJP), Hemang Joshi (BJP), Salman Khurshid and Mohan Kumar. (ANI)

'Action taken against those visibly responsible': Siddaramaiah defends government's response in Bengaluru stampede case
Karnataka Chief Minister Siddaramaiah on Friday hit out at the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) for politicising the stampede at Bengaluru's M Chinnaswamy Stadium, which claimed 11 lives and left dozens injured. The incident occurred during RCB's IPL victory celebrations on June 4. Responding to allegations from the BJP that the Congress-led state government was scapegoating the police, Siddaramaiah told ANI that action had been taken against officials found 'visibly responsible' and 'negligent in their duty.' 'They [BJP] are doing this for politics. I don't do politics. We have taken action against those who were found visibly responsible,' the Chief Minister said. 'The government acted only when pressure mounted. The real accused are Chief Minister Siddaramaiah, Deputy CM DK Shivakumar, and Home Minister G Parameshwara. They should be investigated,' Vijayendra said. Following the tragedy, the government suspended multiple senior police officials, including Bengaluru Police Commissioner B Dayananda. He was replaced by senior IPS officer Seemant Kumar Singh, who officially took charge on Friday. The list of suspended officers includes Additional Commissioner of Police Vikash Kumar Vikash, DCP (Central) Shekhar HT, ACP Balakrishna, and Cubbon Park Police Inspector Girish AK. In parallel, Karnataka Police registered an FIR against the Royal Challengers Bengaluru (RCB), event organisers DNA Entertainment Pvt. Ltd., and the Karnataka State Cricket Association (KSCA), alleging 'irresponsibility' and 'carelessness' in crowd management. In response, the KSCA board, including President Raghuram Bhat, Secretary A. Shankar, and Treasurer E.S. Jairam, filed a writ petition in the Karnataka High Court seeking to quash the FIRs. No official version of Bharat Mata portrait, so cannot be allowed in govt events: Kerala government
The Left government in Kerala on Friday made it clear that it was not in agreement with the use of the Bharat Mata portrait at the Environment Day event at the Raj Bhavan here as the picture was not authorised as the official version by the Constitution or the Indian government. Kerala Agriculture Minister P Prasad , who boycotted the event at the Raj Bhavan a day ago over the use of the portrait, said that those in constitutional offices cannot convert government programmes into political events . Prasad, while talking to a TV channel, said that no Bharat Mata portrait has ever been acknowledged as the official or authorised version by the Constitution or any of the governments in power since independence. Live Events He further said that the portrait about to be used at the event was not carrying the Indian flag, but that of a political organisation, and therefore, it could not be honoured during a government event. The minister said that the particular political organisation and the Governor were free to pay homage to the portrait at private events, but it cannot be done in state government programmes. "We all have a political view, but those in constitutional positions have restrictions on how they express it," he added. He said that the government view was that such a stand ought not to have been taken by a constitutional establishment and expressed hope that it will be corrected by the concerned persons. "It actually should not be repeated in our country. We cannot accept it in Kerala," he added. The minister also questioned why the Governor was "rigid" on the issue, when none of the earlier Governors in the state and not even the Presidents of the country have carried out such a practice in the past. For the World Environment Day event, the Raj Bhavan came out with a minute-to-minute programme, but it initially did not have anything about paying floral tributes to the portrait of Bharat Mata, he said. On eve of the programme, a new schedule was sent to us and it included the paying of floral tribute to Bharat Mata portrait. "So, I enquired with the Raj Bhavan about the floral tributes and asked them to send me a picture of the portrait. The portrait was the one used by the RSS and was not recognised or authorised as an official version, I informed the Raj Bhavan that we cannot offer floral tributes to it," he said. The minister said that the Raj Bhavan in response said they cannot remove the portrait. On being told that the opposition was criticising the lack of response on the issue by Chief Minister Pinarayi Vijayan, Prasad said that the Congress-led UDF was trying to gain political mileage out of it especially in view of the upcoming bypoll in Nilambur assembly constituency. After knowing Raj Bhavan's stand, the state government relocated the event to the Secretariat's Durbar Hall and the Raj Bhavan went ahead with its programme. Later, in a statement issued by the Raj Bhavan, the Governor said, "Whatever be the pressure, from whichever quarters, there will be no compromise whatsoever on Bharat Mata." In his speech at the Raj Bhavan programme, the Governor said two ministers--state Education Minister and Agriculture Minister--had agreed to attend the function but they did not turn up for the event. While Sangh outfit Bharatiya Vichara Kendram strongly backed the Governor, the ruling CPI(M) and the Congress criticised the Raj Bhavan on the matter.

The new service will not only connect Jammu to Kashmir via a rail link but also Kashmir to the rest of India for the first time. While road and air connectivity already existed, the rail link is significant due to the region's challenging geography and tough terrain. The rail route, which is part of the Udhampur-Srinagar-Baramulla Rail Link (USBRL), will be open for commercial services starting Saturday. Katra, Jammu: With chants of 'Jai Shera Wali Da' and 'Bharat Mata Ki Jai', Prime Minister Narendra Modi flagged off the first Vande Bharat Express connecting Jammu to Kashmir Friday. The new railway line is expected to significantly reduce travel time between the Jammu region and Srinagar. The fare for the Katra-Srinagar route is Rs 715 for chair car and Rs 1,350 for executive class. 'This is not just a new railway service but also symbolic of how far the region's railway network has progressed over the last 11 years,' said Railway spokesperson Dilip Kumar. 'We are witnessing history in the making. This railway line is a marvel, and advanced technology has been used to ensure all-weather connectivity,' he added. The inauguration comes weeks after the 22 April Pahalgam terror attack in which 26 people were killed. Since then, tourism in Kashmir has seen a massive decline. The rail link is being seen as a step towards restoring normalcy and inviting tourists to revisit the Valley. 'Earlier, there would be no space to walk at Dal Lake because of the massive tourist footfall. Now, we hardly see a few. Hope this railway line will restore normalcy,' said a shawl seller in Srinagar. By road, the journey used to take around 6-7 hours. For the first time, two Vande Bharat trains will run consecutively—one from Katra and the other from Srinagar—both flagged off by the prime minister. The prime minister also inaugurated two major engineering landmarks. One is the Chenab Rail Bridge, the world's highest railway arch bridge, standing 359 metres above the riverbed, 35 metres taller than the Eiffel Tower. It spans 1,315 metres and is part of the USBRL. It is engineered to withstand seismic and wind conditions. Located about 80 km from Jammu, it spans the Anji River and has been constructed by Hindustan Construction Company. The USBRL will cross a stretch of 271 km that includes 36 tunnels and 943 bridges. It has been built at a cost of Rs 43,780 crore. Before the final launch, several trial runs were conducted. In the last run, army and security personnel boarded the train as it passed over the Chenab Bridge to assess wind resistance and safety protocols. According to officials, the bridge is designed to withstand wind speeds of up to 260 km/h.
