Music stars release silent album in protest against UK AI copyright plans
Is This What We Want features recordings of empty studios, performance spaces, highlighting danger to creative trade.

More than 1,000 musicians, including Kate Bush, Cat Stevens and Annie Lennox, have released a silent album in protest of the proposed changes to British copyright laws around artificial intelligence (AI), which they warned could lead to legalised music theft.
The album, titled Is This What We Want, was launched on Tuesday and features recordings of empty studios and performance spaces, as backlash against the plan grows in the United Kingdom.
The proposed changes would allow AI developers to train their models on any material to which they have lawful access, and would require creators to proactively opt out to stop their work from being used.
Critics, including the artists participating in the silent album, say it would reverse the principle of copyright law, which grants exclusive control to creators over their work.
The emergence of AI has posed a threat to the creative industry, including music, raising legal and ethical questions on a new technological platform that could produce its own output without paying creators of original content.
Bush and other writers and musicians denounced the proposals in UK law as a 'wholesale giveaway' to Silicon Valley in a letter to The Times newspaper.
Ed Newton-Rex, organiser of the project, said musicians were 'united in their thorough condemnation of this ill-thought-through plan'.
In a very rare move, UK newspapers also highlighted their concerns, launching a campaign featuring wrap-around advertisements on the front of almost every national daily, with an inside editorial by the papers' editors.
A public consultation on the legal changes will close later on Tuesday.
British Prime Minister Keir Starmer wants to become a superpower in the AI industry. Responding to the album, a government spokesperson said the current copyright and AI regime was holding back the creative industries from 'realising their full potential'.

Qatar National Library (QNL) is welcoming the summer with a dynamic schedule of public events this June, offering opportunities for historical exploration, creative expression and career development. Opening the month on 1 June, the Library will host a two-day workshop titled 'Consulting British Historical Sources on Arab Gulf History: Focus on Post-Independence Records, 1968–1994.' This session will feature one-to-one support from the Library, which offers individualized feedback as well as books and resources to support participants at all stages of the application process. The series will hold its final session of the month on 30 June with a workshop designed to help participants explore their career options with The platform provides comprehensive career resources, including company reviews and employer rankings, to help individuals make informed decisions about their professional journey. Finally, QNL will host a special lecture on 18 June that delves into European scientific expeditions to the Arab world in the 18th and 19th centuries. The talk will spotlight the writings and desert plant collection of British traveler Richard Pococke, offering fascinating perspectives into the Middle East at that time. The Man They Called ‘The Mad Mullah'
This is a story of anticolonial struggle in the Horn of Africa in the early 20th century. Much of the region was occupied by the British, Italians, French and Ethiopians, and one man led a resistance movement that seriously challenged European colonial authority for 20 years. He was Sayyid Mohammed Abdullah Hassan, a Sufi Muslim, poet and military leader who united the Somali clans and led the armed Dervish Movement. The British nicknamed him 'The Mad Mullah', but he and his Dervish army were formidable opponents, thriving on their knowledge of local conditions to hand out several losses to the occupying forces. In this film, his great-granddaughter visits Somalia for the first time to retrace her ancestor's footsteps and discover more about his vision of an independent Somalia. Hassan ultimately failed in his bid but is still remembered a century later as a symbol of resistance and national pride.

Russell Brand charged with rape and sexual assault
British comedian Russell Brand has been charged with several counts of sexual assault in the United Kingdom. Brand, once one of Britain's most high-profile entertainers and broadcasters, faces one count of rape, one of indecent assault, one of oral rape and two of sexual assault, according to a statement from London's Metropolitan Police published on Friday. The charges stem from complaints by four women over alleged offences that took place from 1999 to 2005. The police said an investigation into Brand 'remains open' and encouraged anyone who has been affected or may have information regarding the case to come forward. The charges come more than a year after British media outlets Channel 4 and The Sunday Times revealed assault allegations by four women against Brand. The 50-year-old comedian has denied any wrongdoing, stating that while he had numerous sexual relationships, they were 'always consensual'. Speaking to conservative American political commentator Tucker Carlson in January 2024, Brand described the accusations against him as 'very, very painful'. 'I'm aware that I put myself in an extremely vulnerable position by being very, very promiscuous. That is not the type of conduct I endorse, and it's certainly not how I would live now,' he said. Known for his risque stand-up routines, Brand also hosted numerous shows on radio and television, wrote memoirs charting his battles with drugs and alcohol, appeared in several Hollywood movies and was married to pop star Katy Perry from 2010 to 2012. In recent years, Brand has been largely absent from mainstream media but has built up a large following online with videos mixing wellness and conspiracy theories. He recently said he had moved to the United States. Police said Brand is due to appear in a London court on May 2.
