HIBERNIAN 1 MIDTJYLLAND 2 (aet): Danes deny Hibs with spectacular overhead-kick winner in the 119th minute of Easter Road thriller
Brazilian substitute Junior Brumado's astonishing overhead kick in the 119th minute of a pulsating contest broke the hearts of David Gray's players and their supporters in a crowd of just under 20,000 which set a new Easter Road attendance record since the ground's reconstruction in the 1990s.
Hibs were desperate to mark the occasion with victory and went toe-to-toe with the talented Danish side, who went ahead at the start of extra-time through a sublime strike from Chilean international Dario Osorio.
Rocky Bushiri levelled the tie once more for the gutsy hosts but it was Brumado who settled it in style for the visitors.
Hibs must now lick their wounds before dropping into the Conference League where they will face Partizan Belgrade in the third qualifying round.
The near-capacity crowd were in a ferment by the time kick-off arrived and Hibs appeared duly energised in the early exchanges as they looked to build on last week's 1-1 draw in Denmark.
Martin Boyle had perhaps just too much adrenaline rushing through him when he raced down the right onto Chris Cadden's perfectly weighted pass and overhit his cross from a promising position.
It was exactly the kind of aggressive and positive start Gray would have wanted from his side nonetheless and Boyle was unfortunate not to make the breakthrough in the fifth minute when his close-range shot was deflected just wide after lovely build-up play from Jamie McGrath and Cadden.
When Midtjylland struggled to clear the subsequent corner, the ball was whipped back into the box by Jordan Obita for Warren O'Hora who should have done better than head it straight at the grateful Jonas Lossl.
It had been a rocky opening for the visitors but they didn't take too long to provide evidence of their attacking threat.
Hibs were carved open on the right side of their defence by Aral Simsir's run and pass to overlapping left-back Paulinho whose shot was deflected wide.
Jordan Smith then had to make his first save of the evening when he held Osorio's long range effort as Midtjylland settled to their task.
There was a real ebb and flow to the contest now and the lively McGrath had the Hibs fans back in full voice when he surged through the middle and sent a rising shot narrowly wide from 20 yards.
The noise levels were further amplified in the 16th minute when Hibs thought they had taken the lead when Kieron Bowie tapped home Obita's superb cross from the left, only for a tight offside decision to be corroborated by VAR.
It was Boyle, who had strayed beyond the last defender and was judged to be interfering.
The pace was relentless from both sides but as the first half wore on, it was Midtjylland who looked the more threatening.
Osorio missed a glorious chance to put them in front when he scooped his shot over from around 12 yards after an incisive exchange of passes with Franculino Dju.
Hibs were becoming increasingly stretched at the back and it required a brilliantly timed saving challenge inside the penalty from O'Hora to deny the dangerous Simsir what looked like a certain goal.
A careless attempted clearance from Smith put his defence in trouble again in the 38th minute but the goalkeeper redeemed himself with a solid save from Oliver Sorensen.
There was no doubt it was Hibs who were the happier team to hear the half-time whistle and have a chance to regroup.
Gray's men struggled to recapture their earlier momentum as Midtjylland remained on the front foot at the start of the second half.
It was their turn to be frustrated by a razor-thin offside call in the 53rd minute when Dju latched onto Lee Han-Beom's lofted through ball and beat Smith with a clever finish. The on-field decision was a goal but after a lengthy VAR check, it was disallowed to a voluble wave of relief around Easter Road.
The let-off seemed to spark Hibs back into life and Boyle sent Cadden bursting into the penalty area to fire in a shot which Lossl could only parry.
Josh Mulligan looked favourite to reach the loose ball but the visitors managed to scramble it clear.
Martin Boyle slides in on Midtjylland's Dario Osario as the Chilean tries to break clear
Hibs continued to live dangerously at the other end and found themselves exposed once more when Dju again raced clear through the middle. Inexplicably, the Guinea-Bissau international striker delayed his shot and was crowded out by a combination of Smith and O'Hora.
Nicky Cadden had the ball in the net again for Hibs in stoppage time but Boyle was clearly offside in the build-up this time and an increasingly nervy tie went into the additional half hour.
Midtjylland needed just four minutes of it to find their breakthrough. The Hibs defence were slow to react as Osorio picked the ball up around 25 yards out and he made the most of the time and space provided as he smashed a fabulous left-foot shot beyond the helpless Smith.
Energy seemed to sap from the four stands but hope was reignited just before half-time in extra-time as Bushiri reinforced his cult status among the Hibs fans by sweeping the equaliser home from close range after fine work from sub Elie Youan on the left.
Penalties loomed, with the Danes even subbing their keeper in preparation, but Brumado stunned Easter Road when he acrobatically smashed Kevin Mbabu's cross beyond Smith.
HIBERNIAN (3-4-2-1): Smith; O'Hora, Bushiri, Iredale (Hoilett 98); C Cadden (Campbell 59), Mulligan, Levitt (Youan 79), Obita; Boyle (Klidje 101), McGrath; Bowie (N Cadden 79, Megwa 105). Booked: C Cadden, Boyle, McGrath, Campbell. Manager: David Gray.

Arsenal 2 Villarreal 3: Viktor Gyokeres upstaged by £72million forgotten Gunners flop on Emirates Stadium bow
VIKTOR GYOKERES is wearing the No14 shirt made famous by Thierry Henry and the Swede is also looking to become an Arsenal legend. Unfortunately for the club's big summer signing, he had just 14 touches on his Emirates debut before being replaced in the 62nd minute, so this will not be a night he looks back with fondness. 4 4 4 4 Not that it really matters, obviously. If Gyokeres fires the goals to end Arsenal's role as permanent Premier League bridesmaids to clinch the title, and there is no reason why he cannot, the Swede will be forgiven if he takes time to adjust in north London. On the night all eyes were on the new arrival from Sporting Lisbon, absolutely no-one had taken any notice of Villarreal's Nicolas Pepe. So while we all expected an expensive signing by Arsenal to score, you would not have had any money on it being £72m Arsenal flop Pepe. Villarreal's Ivory Coast international scored the first goal and Karl Etta Eyong made it 2-0 before new arrival Christian Norgaard scored with a header. Yet while we have spent the last few weeks talking about the need of a top striker, Mikel Arteta's team will have to defend better than this, and sub Arnaut Danjuma made it 3-1 before Martin Odegaard pulled one back from the penalty spot. Villarreal then won a penalty shoot-out 4-3 with another new arrival, Noni Madueke, missing the decisive spot-kick. Gyokeres, who cost £8.5million less than Pepe, made his club debut as a 77th minute substitute against Spurs in Hong Kong but was given a heroes' welcome at a packed Emirates. If Arsenal are to get the best out of their new all-singing, all-dancing goal machine, they will have to give him more ammunition. Equally, Gyokeres did not have a proper pre-season as he barely trained in Lisbon. He will soon be in better shape and has another run-out on Saturday against Athletic Bilbao. Gyokeres tried to score his first goal in spectacular style but failed to connect with an attempted bicycle kick from Bukayo Saka's cross and he had few other chances. In terms of the way he moves and the fact has blonde hair, it was a bit like having Nicklas Bendtner back at the Emirates although it is safe to say Gyokeres will do a bit better than the cocky Dane. Arteta also gave second half Emirates debuts to Christhian Mosquera, Martin Zubimendi, keeper Kepa Arrizabalaga and Noni Madueke. Yet the comedy moment of the night was Pepe opening the scoring from close range and then refusing to celebrate. Pepe arrived from Lille for that massive amount in 2019 and scored just 27 goals in 112 appearances before joining Trabzonspor on a free transfer in 2023. Many Arsenal fans probably did not realise that Pepe was even playing in this fixture although there was a mixture of jeers and applause when his name was read out after scoring. Etta Eyong scored at the far post for 2-0 before former Brentford captain Norgaard pulled one back with a far post header before the break. The biggest roar of the night came just after the hour when 15-year-old Max Dowman was unleashed. Villarreal caught Arsenal on the break with former Bournemouth forward Danjuma making it 3-1 before Dowman won a penalty and Odegaard, who replaced Gyokeres, got Arsenal's second. There was still a shoot-out although Madueke saw his shot saved with one fan shouting: 'send him back to Chelsea.' Meanwhile, Arsenal - yet again - have fitness concerns. Both defender Riccardo Calafiori, who suffered an injury on the tour, along with Kai Havertz, were missing from the squad.

David Gray expects tough test and hostile environment against FK Partizan
David Gray expects a tough test against FK Partizan tomorrow in the third qualifying round of the UEFA Conference League. Since the return of competitive football this season, his players have put in three positive performances – drawing twice in normal time with Champions League regulars FC Midtjylland and picking up their first three points of the season at Dundee. He said: 'I expect a tough test and a hostile environment,' 'With the level of performance we've had in the last three games, the players should be going over there full of confidence. We're really looking forward to the challenge, it'll be a tough test, one some of the players haven't had before, but we will make sure they're ready. 'It's a new, different challenge. A lot of the players have played at Celtic Park, Ibrox, Tynecastle. These are big pressure games with big crowds. Yes, it'll be slightly different because of the hostile fans in the home end and the temperature of the stadium, but it's something the players should relish and look forward too. 'We need to believe we can go there and get a positive result. If we can play to our very best, like we have in the last few games, we know we're a good side.' In terms of team news, Gray will have a similar squad available to him, but he was able to provide a more positive update on Nicky Cadden. 'Nicky picked up a hamstring issue. I don't think we will be ready for Thursday. It's only a mild issue, so we won't take any risks at this stage, but apart from him, Rudi, and Joe, everyone else is available from the squad that was in Dundee. 'We're another week fitter, stronger, and the players need to feed off the feel good feeling at the training ground at the minute.' Like this: Like Related
