THE PREVIEW: Hibs boss Gray will have no issue helping side bounce back from Europa League heartache
By this stage, Hibernian manager David Gray is well accustomed to picking his players up from the canvas. He's had plenty of practice, after all, having spent the first five months of last season doing pretty much nothing else. The 2016 Scottish Cup-winning captain engineered a turnaround nobody in their right mind saw coming, taking his side from relegation candidates to a spot in Europe. Which is why neither he, his squad or the Hibs supporters should have any trouble shrugging off Thursday night's kick — or rather, overhead kick — in the teeth as they get their Premiership campaign under way against Dundee this weekend. Junior Brumado's acrobatic effort for Midtjylland with penalties looming at Easter Road was sickening and stunning in equal measure, and abruptly ended the Edinburgh side's participation in this year's Europa League at the first hurdle. If anything, though, the performance of Gray's men over both legs against the Danes should provide grounds for optimism rather than despair. They rode their luck at times, as was to be expected, but there's no doubt they were impressive. Surpassed expectations, even. Steven Pressley will take charge of Dundee for the first time in the Premiership on Sunday Of course, Hibs' continental adventure isn't over, with the Conference League group stage now the target. An ominous trip to Partizan Belgrade is to come on Thursday but, on the evidence served up so far, they can be confident of making a decent fist of it. Before then, they are faced with an altogether different proposition at Dens Park. It's safe to say that Dundee supporters are still waiting for that so-called new manager bounce to kick in following the arrival of Steven Pressley this summer. His side were hopeless in back-to-back Premier Sports Cup losses to Airdrieonians and Alloa Athletic respectively as they were dumped out of the competition in embarrassing fashion. Dundee fans are a hard bunch to please at the best of times — just ask Tony Docherty — so Elvis can hardly be too surprised to find himself under the cosh early doors. On paper, Sunday afternoon's clash should be a non-contest even taking the visitors' midweek exertions into account. That being said, it will be interesting to see how Hibs handle the next few weeks on the domestic front with at least two more European ties to come. St Mirren and Kilmarnock both struggled with the balancing act in the early weeks of last season. The Buddies thumped Gray's side 3-0 on the opening day before failing to win any of their next five, while Killie didn't register a league victory until the first week of October. It's a testing time, no doubt, but you would have to assume Hibs have more than enough quality to cope. Dundee United face the same dilemma. Look, they did what was expected of them by seeing off UNA Strassen of Luxembourg on Thursday. But manager Jim Goodwin isn't daft. He knows it could have very easily have been the minnows gearing up for a crack at Rapid Vienna later this week instead. Of course, there would have been no such issue if the Irishman had fielded a team full of home-grown talent. Or at least, that's what some would have you believe. The Tangerines — so impressive on their return to the top tier last season — will be at new boys Falkirk on Sunday afternoon hoping to spoil their big Premiership welcome party. A big improvement is needed. McInnes faces Hearts acid test Who said managing Hearts was hard work? 'We're not here to mess about,' was the statement of intent delivered by new boss Derek McInnes earlier this week. He's certainly living up to his word so far. In a matter of weeks, the former Killie manager has delivered four wins from four in the Premier Sports Cup, thumped English top-flight newcomers Sunderland — albeit in a friendly — and got Lawrence Shankland looking like... well, Lawrence Shankland again. McInnes couldn't have hoped to go into Monday night's league opener against Aberdeen in front of a packed-out Tynecastle in a better position. This, of course, is the acid test. His chances of a winning start could be bolstered by the fact that the Dons have been busy basking in the glory of their recent Scottish Cup triumph throughout the summer. Quite right, too. But that lack of competitive football could come back to bite them given the way Hearts have hit the ground running.

'To go out like that is very hard'
Defender Warren O'Hora has urged Hibs to "dust themselves off" for Sunday's Premiership opener against Dundee after the devastating defeat to Midtjylland. Hibs were knocked out of the Europa League qualifiers by an extra-time overhead kick from Junior Brumado on Thursday night. David Gray's side will face Partizan Belgrade away in the first leg of their Conference League third-round qualifier next Thursday and O'Hora is determined to head to Serbia on the back of victory at Dens Park. "It's very hard," O'Hora told HibsTV, external. "The three goals over the two legs are very good quality, there's not a lot we can do."There's probably things before we could be better at but when you see their goals, it hurts a little bit more. "One thing I will say, the boys dug deep. Extra time in the second leg against a team of that quality isn't easy. Easter Road was absolutely rocking and it was a really hard one to take. "We knew what was at stake, the first leg we wanted to come back to Easter Road with something to fight for. We knew it wasn't going to be easy, and it wasn't. "To go out like that is very hard but we have to dust ourselves off because the league starts on Sunday and we want to start positive."

Gallant Hibs took Midtjylland to extra time on a heady night in Leith before succumbing to some sumptuousness from South America. After absorbing wave after wave of Danish pressure and taking their visitors to extra time, Hibs were undone by strikes of real quality from Chilean Dario Osorio on 94 minutes and then Brazilian Junior Brumado one minute from the end. It is to Hibs' credit that it required such moments to sink them, rallying when going behind to net through Rocky Bushiri. They drop into the third qualifying round of the Conference League and will face Serbian side Partizan Belgrade, who defeated Oleksandriya 4-0 to prevail 6-0 overall. For all the effort and determination, Midtjylland were a cut above. The teams emerged to fireworks as a packed Easter Road got right behind their team. Head coach David Gray stuck with the same team that coped so admirably in the first leg over in Herning. Scotland defender Grant Hanley, who Hibs are in talks with over a potential move, was an interested spectator in the stands. Blistering start Hibs had the first chance on five minutes. After some patient build-up play, the ball was fired long and Chris Cadden fed Martin Boyle, only for his shot to be blocked for a corner. A minute later, Warren O'Hora headed straight at Jonas Lossl in the visiting goal. Just like in Denmark, Hibs wanted a fast start. The Danes had grown into the game by this point and seemed reasonably unperturbed by the raucous atmosphere. Their main man in attack, Franculino, glanced a header over the bar in what was their first meaningful attack. Hibs did have the ball in the net on 16 minutes when Bowie netted from close range after an excellent cross from Jordan Obita, but the offside flag was swiftly raised to cut celebrations short. The two sides jabbed at each other. Osorio pounced on a slack pass from Jack Iredale, traded passes with Franculino and fired just over. It was a reminder of how dangerous the visitors could be - especially the Chilean. They nearly broke the deadlock on 38 minutes. A poor clearance from Smith was seized upon and suddenly Valdemir Byskov was in on goal. The keeper redeemed himself with a smart stop, albeit it was a poor finish. Advertisement Hide Ad Advertisement Hide Ad The Danes were now in the ascendancy and pressing for the opener before the break. Smith blocked a drilled cross-shot with his legs and then Osorio curled an effort just over. Hibs welcomed the interval. The tie remained on a knife-edge. The action resumed with Midtjylland in the ascendancy. They had reason to rue the offside flag on 53 minutes when Franculino netted from a long ball. VAR intervened and Easter Road roared its approval. Hibs were energised by the reprieve. Cadden roared up the right flank and Lossl saved smartly from his effort. It was his last moment as, on a booking, he was replaced by Josh Campbell, with Josh Mulligan moving to right wing-back. Hibs missed the Dundonian's presence in the middle as a result of the switch. Midtjylland still looked most likely to break the deadlock. Victor Bak slalomed in from the left but slashed over on 66 minutes. Then Franculino burst through on goal once more, only to dawdle and allow O'Hora to recover and snuff out the danger. Advertisement Hide Ad Advertisement Hide Ad Hibs were now penned in. Midtjylland's quality was really showing in the last 20 minutes as they drove forward searching for a winner. Gray turned to his bench as Nicky Cadden and Elie Youan were brought on to freshen things up. Midtjylland substitute Mikel Gorgoza sent a couple of shots towards goal and the hosts scrambled away a free-kick from the impressive Osorio. Then Iredale had to turn a fizzed cross away from close to his own goalline. Extra-time breatkhrough Hibs did find the net in stoppage time but Boyle was clearly offside. That was to be it for 90 minutes as extra time beckoned. Could Hibs survive another half-hour of pressure? The answer was no. Advertisement Hide Ad Advertisement Hide Ad Finally, Midtjylland found the breakthrough. It took a moment of brilliance from the most impressive player on the pitch. On 96 minutes, Osorio picked up the ball 25 yards out and thumped a left-footed effort past the helpless Smith. Easter Road groaned. (Photo by Paul Devlin / SNS Group) | SNS Group Now Hibs had to be more proactive. Cadden had his own effort from distance not long after that was deflected wide of Lossl's post. Hope was fading of finding a leveller but right on the stroke of half-time, Bushiri did it. Youan deserves great credit for getting to the byline and cutting the ball back for the big defender to fire home from close range. Easter Road exploded in joy. The last 15 minutes were cagey. Junior Hoilett had Hibs' best chance on 117 minutes after a quick counter but sclaffed his effort when in a promising position. Then Midtjylland changed their keeper, presuming penalties, as Lossl was replaced by Elias Olafsson. He wasn't needed.

HIBERNIAN 1 MIDTJYLLAND 2 (aet): Danes deny Hibs with spectacular overhead-kick winner in the 119th minute of Easter Road thriller
What promised to be a momentous evening for Hibernian ended in agonising anti-climax as Midtjylland dramatically snatched a place in the third qualifying round of the Europa League. Brazilian substitute Junior Brumado's astonishing overhead kick in the 119th minute of a pulsating contest broke the hearts of David Gray's players and their supporters in a crowd of just under 20,000 which set a new Easter Road attendance record since the ground's reconstruction in the 1990s. Hibs were desperate to mark the occasion with victory and went toe-to-toe with the talented Danish side, who went ahead at the start of extra-time through a sublime strike from Chilean international Dario Osorio. Rocky Bushiri levelled the tie once more for the gutsy hosts but it was Brumado who settled it in style for the visitors. Hibs must now lick their wounds before dropping into the Conference League where they will face Partizan Belgrade in the third qualifying round. The near-capacity crowd were in a ferment by the time kick-off arrived and Hibs appeared duly energised in the early exchanges as they looked to build on last week's 1-1 draw in Denmark. Martin Boyle had perhaps just too much adrenaline rushing through him when he raced down the right onto Chris Cadden's perfectly weighted pass and overhit his cross from a promising position. It was exactly the kind of aggressive and positive start Gray would have wanted from his side nonetheless and Boyle was unfortunate not to make the breakthrough in the fifth minute when his close-range shot was deflected just wide after lovely build-up play from Jamie McGrath and Cadden. When Midtjylland struggled to clear the subsequent corner, the ball was whipped back into the box by Jordan Obita for Warren O'Hora who should have done better than head it straight at the grateful Jonas Lossl. It had been a rocky opening for the visitors but they didn't take too long to provide evidence of their attacking threat. Hibs were carved open on the right side of their defence by Aral Simsir's run and pass to overlapping left-back Paulinho whose shot was deflected wide. Jordan Smith then had to make his first save of the evening when he held Osorio's long range effort as Midtjylland settled to their task. There was a real ebb and flow to the contest now and the lively McGrath had the Hibs fans back in full voice when he surged through the middle and sent a rising shot narrowly wide from 20 yards. The noise levels were further amplified in the 16th minute when Hibs thought they had taken the lead when Kieron Bowie tapped home Obita's superb cross from the left, only for a tight offside decision to be corroborated by VAR. It was Boyle, who had strayed beyond the last defender and was judged to be interfering. The pace was relentless from both sides but as the first half wore on, it was Midtjylland who looked the more threatening. Osorio missed a glorious chance to put them in front when he scooped his shot over from around 12 yards after an incisive exchange of passes with Franculino Dju. Hibs were becoming increasingly stretched at the back and it required a brilliantly timed saving challenge inside the penalty from O'Hora to deny the dangerous Simsir what looked like a certain goal. A careless attempted clearance from Smith put his defence in trouble again in the 38th minute but the goalkeeper redeemed himself with a solid save from Oliver Sorensen. There was no doubt it was Hibs who were the happier team to hear the half-time whistle and have a chance to regroup. Gray's men struggled to recapture their earlier momentum as Midtjylland remained on the front foot at the start of the second half. It was their turn to be frustrated by a razor-thin offside call in the 53rd minute when Dju latched onto Lee Han-Beom's lofted through ball and beat Smith with a clever finish. The on-field decision was a goal but after a lengthy VAR check, it was disallowed to a voluble wave of relief around Easter Road. The let-off seemed to spark Hibs back into life and Boyle sent Cadden bursting into the penalty area to fire in a shot which Lossl could only parry. Josh Mulligan looked favourite to reach the loose ball but the visitors managed to scramble it clear. Martin Boyle slides in on Midtjylland's Dario Osario as the Chilean tries to break clear Hibs continued to live dangerously at the other end and found themselves exposed once more when Dju again raced clear through the middle. Inexplicably, the Guinea-Bissau international striker delayed his shot and was crowded out by a combination of Smith and O'Hora. Nicky Cadden had the ball in the net again for Hibs in stoppage time but Boyle was clearly offside in the build-up this time and an increasingly nervy tie went into the additional half hour. Midtjylland needed just four minutes of it to find their breakthrough. The Hibs defence were slow to react as Osorio picked the ball up around 25 yards out and he made the most of the time and space provided as he smashed a fabulous left-foot shot beyond the helpless Smith. Energy seemed to sap from the four stands but hope was reignited just before half-time in extra-time as Bushiri reinforced his cult status among the Hibs fans by sweeping the equaliser home from close range after fine work from sub Elie Youan on the left. Penalties loomed, with the Danes even subbing their keeper in preparation, but Brumado stunned Easter Road when he acrobatically smashed Kevin Mbabu's cross beyond Smith.
