Sarawak Govt Aims For Rural-urban Equitable Growth
KUCHING, May 31 (Bernama) -- The increase in rural development allocation for this year's Sarawak budget is a reflection of the state government's unwavering resolve to narrow the rural-urban gap and ensure equitable growth.
Deputy Premier Datuk Amar Douglas Uggah Embas said RM6.8 billion had been allocated under the Sarawak 2025 Budget for rural development, which rose from RM5.695 billion in 2024, indicating the State Premier Tan Sri Abang Johari Tun Openg's clear commitment to uplift the wellbeing of the rural communities.
In his message for the Gawai Dayak festival, which begins tomorrow (June 1), Uggah said the rural development focus has seen major bridge projects being implemented as growth catalysts.

PM Anwar Proposes Strategic Housing Development Near Public Transport
GENERAL PETALING JAYA, June 4 (Bernama) – Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim has proposed that new people's housing projects be developed on or near public transport stations, as a move to encourage more comprehensive use of the public transport system. Anwar said that such a housing development concept would not only provide more strategic residences for low-income groups but also pave the way for a more sustainable and organised urban lifestyle. 'There are proposals to develop housing directly on top of public transport stations, but this requires certain amendments (to laws) and is currently being worked on. 'An example is the Kota MADANI project, where I emphasised comprehensive and centralised basic amenities for the welfare of the people, including vertical development,' he said. The Prime Minister was speaking at the Malaysia MADANI Scholars' Forum (FIM) Series 6 at Menara Prasarana here, tonight. The forum, organised by the Ministry of Higher Education (MOHE), discussed the topic 'Transport for the People: Balancing Affordability, Quality, and Sustainability of Public Transport'. Also participating as panellists were Transport Minister Anthony Loke; Prasarana Malaysia Berhad President and Group Chief Executive Officer Mohd Azharuddin Mat Sah; and Universiti Putra Malaysia Vice-Chancellor Datuk Prof Dr Ahmad Farhan Mohd Sadullah. Meanwhile, Anwar said that open discourse platforms like the forum were crucial to ensure government policies were formulated by considering the voices of various parties, including academicians, industry experts, government supporters, and even the opposition. Anwar said the organisation of such forums proved that the government did not shut down criticism, but instead encouraged differing views, provided they were delivered professionally and constructively.

Indonesian, French firms partner up to develop efuels
JAKARTA: (Bernama-Xinhua) PT Pertamina New & Renewable Energy (NRE), a sub-holding of Indonesia's state-owned oil and gas company PT Pertamina, is collaborating with French firm MGH Energy to explore breakthroughs in the production of e-fuels, an official said on Wednesday (June 4), reported Xinhua. The partnership, formalised during the Indonesia-France Business Forum on May 28, focuses on the development of e-methanol and eSAF (e-sustainable aviation fuel), according to John Anis, CEO of PT Pertamina NRE. "Indonesia has a huge potential of renewable resources, from solar to hydro, which could be the basis for industrial-scale e-fuel production," said Anis in a statement issued Wednesday. He added that this strategic collaboration not only aims to develop innovative solutions for reducing carbon emissions but also represents a valuable opportunity for technology transfer. It is expected to accelerate both the production and adoption of renewable energy in Indonesia. Fadjar Djoko Santoso, vice president of corporate communication at PT Pertamina, emphasised the importance of international cooperation in tackling climate change and achieving national environmental goals. "PT Pertamina NRE plays an important role in the transition to clean energy. This collaboration is a strategic step towards a more sustainable, fair, and open energy system," he said. Fahmi congratulates sign language interpreter Tan Lee Bee
KUALA LUMPUR: Minister of Communications Datuk Fahmi Fadzil extended his congratulations to sign language interpreter, Tan Lee Bee, who was awarded the Bintang Ahli Mangku Negara (AMN) by His Majesty Sultan Ibrahim, King of Malaysia, on Monday. Fahmi also shared a photo with Tan and Deputy Minister of Communications Teo Nie Ching on his Facebook post. 'Met Lee Bee at the Royal Tea Reception in Istana Negara earlier today. May you continue to excel. Thank you for being a 'silent hero' who always inspire and enrich our TV screens with full dedication and spirit,' the post read. The Royal Tea Reception was a specially arranged event in conjunction with His Majesty Sultan Ibrahim, King of Malaysia's Official Birthday. Tan, 64, was among 16 individuals who received the AMN award at the Federal Awards, Orders, and Medals Investiture Ceremony in conjunction with His Majesty, Sultan Ibrahim, King of Malaysia's Official Birthday at Istana Negara on Monday. Bernama had earlier reported that Tan began her work as a sign language interpreter out of love for her hearing-impaired younger sibling. She learned sign language to help her sibling and also served as a teacher for 17 years for the hearing impaired. Since 1994, Tan has been the first sign language interpreter at the Federal Court of Malaysia, while her involvement in broadcasting began around 1985, through the program Selamat Pagi Malaysia on RTM, and later also became a sign language interpreter for RTM news broadcasts and official communication videos.
