Eritrea: World Breastfeeding Week Observed at National Level
At a national-level ceremony organized today in Asmara, Sister Amleset Hagos from the Ministry of Health stated that breastfeeding protects against various diseases, supports physical and mental development, contains all essential nutrients, and ensures the future health of infants.
Sister Amleset also called on all institutions to establish daycare centers to ease the burden on breastfeeding mothers.
Mr. Abdulah Mohammed Yosuf, UNICEF Representative in Eritrea, noted that according to the 2010 Eritrea Public Health Survey, over 90% of children are breastfed within the first hour, and 69% are exclusively breastfed for six months. These achievements have significantly contributed to reducing neonatal and child mortality, placing Eritrea among the global leaders in breastfeeding practices.
At the discussion forum moderated by the Association of Medical Doctors of Eritrea, female doctors shared their experiences with participants, focusing on the general benefits of breastfeeding, maternity leave, the importance of establishing daycare centers at institutions, and support for breastfeeding mothers in the workplace.
Awards were also presented to winners of the general knowledge competitions conducted during the week.

Nearly 12,000 children under five in Gaza have acute malnutrition, says WHO
Around 12,000 children aged under five in Gaza are suffering from acute malnutrition, and hunger-related deaths are rising, the Director General of the World Health Organisation (WHO) said on Thursday. "In July, nearly 12,000 children under five years were identified as having acute malnutrition in Gaza, the highest monthly figure ever recorded," Tedros Adhanom Ghebreyesus said at his organisation's headquarters in Geneva. At least 99 people have died, including 64 adults and 35 children, of whom 29 were younger than five, from the start of this year to July 29. Between June and July, the number of admissions for malnutrition almost doubled - from 6,344 to 11,877 - according to the latest UNICEF figures available. Some 2,500 of those children are suffering from severe malnutrition. Tedros called for greater volumes of sustained aid, via all possible routes. The WHO said it was supporting Gaza's four malnutrition centres, but that supplies of baby formula and nutritional foods were very low. 20 Killed, Dozens Injured After Gaza Aid Trucks Overturn
At least 20 Palestinians were killed and dozens more injured after four humanitarian aid trucks overturned in central Gaza on Wednesday. The trucks, reportedly directed down an unsafe road by Israeli forces, lost control as crowds rushed them in desperation. Chaos on Damaged Roads Local officials say the trucks were carrying food and supplies when they were overwhelmed by civilians. Many people reportedly climbed onto the moving vehicles, leading to a loss of control on badly damaged, uneven roads. Some reports say a rocket-propelled grenade may have been fired during the chaos, adding to the panic. The convoy included 26 trucks — the first time in months Israel allowed private imports into Gaza. Hospitals Overwhelmed Doctors in central Gaza said hospitals are struggling to handle the wave of casualties, with many victims suffering from crush injuries. The humanitarian crisis continues to worsen, with starvation, malnutrition, and disease spreading across the region. Aid Access Still Under Fire According to Gaza's Civil Defense, Israeli policies and unsafe conditions are deliberately obstructing aid access. "Drivers are forced onto overcrowded roads," they said, "where desperate people are waiting for anything they can get." Since October 2023, 188 people have died from starvation, including 94 children, according to Gaza's Health Ministry. Just this Wednesday, three more people — including a child and an infant — reportedly died of malnutrition.
