Navarrete beats Suarez on technical decision to keep title

Yahoo11-05-2025

Mexico's Emanuel Navarrete kept his World Boxing Organization super-featherweight world title on Saturday with a seven-round technical decision over previously unbeaten Filipino fighter Charly Suarez in San Diego.
The fight was halted after seven rounds with Navarrete bleeding from a cut over his left eye caused by an accidental clash of heads in the sixth round.
The outcome was then decided by the scorecards at the time of the stoppage with all three having Navarrete ahead -- 77-76, 77-76 and 78-75.
The 30-year-old Mexican improved to 40-2 with one draw as he defended his crown for the fourth time.
Navarrete had missed the 130-pound weight limit in his first try at the scales but was inside the limit two hours later at a final weigh-in.
Suarez, seeking his first world title at the age of 36, fell to 18-1.
Suarez was stunned by an accidental clash of heads late in round four.
Another clash of heads in the sixth opened a deep gash above Navarrete's left eye, gushing blood impacting his vision and causing the early stoppage in the bout scheduled for 12 rounds.

Giants' Receiver Jalin Hyatt Sends Social Media Message at OTAs

Giants' Receiver Jalin Hyatt Sends Social Media Message at OTAs originally appeared on Athlon Sports. New York Giants receiver Jalin Hyatt was drafted to open up the offense with his elite speed and knack for making big plays downfield. Through his own inconsistencies and poor quarterback play, he stumbled through his rookie season and face-plant in Year 2. Advertisement Subsequently, Hyatt is all but out of New York's long-term plans. Re-signing receiver Darius Slayton for three seasons maintains Hyatt's ceiling as the fourth receiver on this roster. As things stand, Hyatt is enduring a left-tailed outcome for a Day 2 pick, and if he struggles in 2025, it would be awfully difficult to save him a roster spot ahead of a contract year. Hyatt plans on changing the narrative on his career, and that starts at OTAs, where he has impressed with veteran Russell Wilson under center. The Giants' receiver sent a message to his critics in a now-deleted tweet. 'I hold grudges .. I ain't forget.' Advertisement Hyatt's 2024 season went about as poorly as a healthy campaign can go. He was at his best replacing Slayton for one game, but ultimately finished with just eight catches and 62 yards in 16 games. He is yet to find the end zone as a professional. Still, Hyatt possesses upside as a field stretcher, and that meshes well with Wilson, whose 'moon balls' have kept him potent past his prime. He spoke about his growing rapport with the receiving corps at OTAs. 'The time we spent in the offseason has paid off,' he told reporters. "The time that they've worked in their walkthroughs, all the way to how they've approached that to, obviously, our approach in practice. 'And the speed that they play with. You saw Slayton catch that bomb today, I threw it to him, and just his ability to make plays down the field. Advertisement 'Jalin, I'm really excited about him and what he's done so far.' Connecting with Wilson could earn Hyatt the playing time he needs to let his tools win. Head coach Brian Daboll consistently preached being aggressive ahead of the 2024 season, suggesting that he'll unleash Wilson now that he has a passer he can trust. Wilson is always positive, especially when praising his teammates. But that doesn't mean it's all smoke. Hyatt will have the opportunity to earn his quarterback's confidence and push for playing time this summer. So far, he's gotten off to a hot start. 'I think Jalin Hyatt, he's a guy that I really believe in.' Abdullah Mason stops Jeremia Nakathila in 5th round to set up WBO lightweight title shot

Abdullah Mason is heading toward a shot at the world title. Mason (18-0, 16 KOs) stopped Jeremia Nakathila at the beginning of Round 5 in their ESPN-televised main event bout Saturday night from the Scope Arena in Norfolk, Virginia. Advertisement It was a mature performance from Mason, 21, who didn't rush his work and boxed behind a sharp southpaw jab. Mason rocked Nakathila with a left hand in the final minute of Round 3, but Nakathila (26-4, 21 KOs) was saved by the bell. Mason continued his success into Round 4, consistently finding the target with his powerful backhand and wobbling Nakathila on every connection. Nakathila, 35, complained to his corner team and the referee that he couldn't see out of his left eye between the fourth and fifth rounds. The referee called the ringside doctor to examine Nakathila's eye at the beginning of Round 5, and upon hearing that Nakathila couldn't see out of the eye, he advised the referee to stop the bout. Mason vs. Nakathila was upgraded to the main-event slot late Friday after Keyshawn Davis' fight with Edwin De Los Santos was canceled just 24 hours before it was scheduled to take place because Davis missed weight by more than four pounds at the weigh-in and the two sides could not reach an agreement to allow the bout to continue. Davis was subsequently stripped of his WBO lightweight title. Advertisement Mason, Uncrowned's runner-up for 2024 Prospect of the Year, is the No. 2-ranked contender for the belt formerly held by Davis, and he will likely be ordered to face Sam Noakes, the WBO No. 1-ranked lightweight, for the vacant championship later this year. Noakes was planning a fight with Ireland's Jono Carroll in August, sources close to the situation told Uncrowned. But with a world title shot looming, the bout may now not go ahead. "That should be workable, and that's something we definitely want," Mason said about a potential Noakes fight for the WBO title. "We want to work toward those world titles." Are Commanders Right To Remain Unconcerned Over Terry McLaurin's Absence?

Are Commanders Right To Remain Unconcerned Over Terry McLaurin's Absence? originally appeared on Athlon Sports. No current player on the Washington Commanders deserved the success that last season brought more than wide receiver Terry McLaurin. Advertisement Since being a pick out of Ohio State in 2019, McLaurin has been able to excel despite having to team with some of the worst quarterbacks in the league throwing him the football. From Carson Wentz to Taylor Heinicke, the Commanders struggled to find a quality quarterback that could get McLaurin the ball. His production never wavered, though. Now, with Jayden Daniels as the star of the show in Washington's offense, McLaurin wants a new contract that pays him his worth as the team's top receiving threat. As a deal has not happened yet, the Ohio State product is choosing to sit out of voluntary workouts. Yet despite reports of a growing frustration on McLaurin's behalf, Daniels specifically is not overly concerned about the contract talks. Advertisement "Me and Terry have a good relationship outside of football,' Daniels said. "Obviously, he has to handle what he has to handle but that doesn't change anything, the fact that he is part of our brotherhood. We know Terry is working and everything. We have to get better and he knows he has to get better each and every day." Daniels's public support of McLaurin could help him as he looks for his new deal. Washington needs to make its top quarterback happy, and extending McLaurin is the best way to do that. McLaurin checking out is dramatic twist. But … A deal will eventually get done with both sides. It's why the organization isn't too worried about where contract talks are currently right now.
