Emmanuel Navarrete vs Charly Suarez result overturned as rematch is ordered

Emmanuel Navarrete has been ordered to have a rematch with Charly Suarez after his controversial win was overturned to a No Contest. The Mexican claimed a technical victory over Suarez (18-0, 10 knockouts), but the California State Athletic Commission (CSAC) has since reviewed the circumstances of the win after an appeal from Suarez's team. After doing so, it has now changed the result to a No Contest. That came after the bout went to the scorecards after eight rounds, due to Navarrete seemingly sustaining a cut from an accidental clash of heads, with the champion leading on all three cards at the time. Dr AnnMaria De Mars, commissioner of the CSAC, said: 'Suarez punched [Navarrete] directly where he got cut, but I'm always against changing a loss to a win.' The rules would dictate that if a replay was available before the result was announced, Suarez would have won, as Navarrete (39-2-1, 32 KOs) was unable to continue due to the severity of the cut. But the referee judged the cut to be from an accidental head clash and thus gave the win to Navarrette, due to his points lead. Since the judgement, the WBO has ordered an immediate rematch between Navarrete and Suarez, meaning that should the champion want to defend his belt in his next fight, it will have to be against the Filipino challenger. Suarez's lawyer, Ricardo Navalta, said that although the result of the review was positive, his fighter might have been robbed of the biggest moment of his career. He said: 'These guys spend their whole lives for a night like this. To feel that you didn't get a fair shake, that's pretty rough. This kid has already been deprived of his moment.' Top Rank boss Bob Arum already teased a show in the Philippines to celebrate the 50th anniversary of Muhammad Ali and Joe Frazier's 'Thrilla in Manila', saying the rematch would be perfect for this card in the aftermath of the fight.

Boxing world champion set to have controversial win OVERTURNED after rare use of video replay

WORLD champion Emanuel Navarrete is set to have his win over Charly Suarez changed to a no-contest after a rare use of video replay. Mexican Navarrete was defending his WBO super-featherweight title in San Diego when he was cut above his left eyebrow in round six. 2 By the eighth, ringside physician Dr. Robert Ruelaz ruled the fight needed to be stopped with Navarrete's vision impaired. Per the rules of boxing, if a cut is caused by a punch and the bout is stopped it results in a TKO. But, if deemed to have been caused by a headbutt then the fight goes to the judges scorecards at the time of the stoppage. In this case, Navarrete led on the cards and was awarded a technical decision - retaining his 130lb title. Video replay was used on the night and official Jack Reiss said there was no conclusive evidence to deem that a punch caused the cut. Footage revealed a swiping left hook landing on Navarrete before the two came together shortly afterwards - making it unclear where the cut was caused. But, in a subsequent review days after the bout, the California State Athletic Commission now look set to overturn the result, BoxingScene report. It marks a rare occasion when a fight is overturned using replays in the days following the bout. Had the punch been deemed to have caused the cut on the night of the fight it would have crowned Suarez as the new champ. But, if Navarrete's win is indeed overturned to a no-contest then he will still retain the title with a rematch expected to be called. He said after the fight: 'I felt it was a headbutt. I saw the review. It seems like a punch, but it exploded two layers of skin. 'I didn't want it to end. I was fine to keep going. I felt like the best rounds were still to come. But the doctor stopped the fight. 'He would be a great opponent. He is a great opponent. So a rematch would be good.' Suarez added: 'I thought I had a chance to win the fight. I had five more rounds to try to win." 2

Navarrete beats Suarez on technical decision to keep title

Mexico's Emanuel Navarrete kept his World Boxing Organization super-featherweight world title on Saturday with a seven-round technical decision over previously unbeaten Filipino fighter Charly Suarez in San Diego. The fight was halted after seven rounds with Navarrete bleeding from a cut over his left eye caused by an accidental clash of heads in the sixth round. The outcome was then decided by the scorecards at the time of the stoppage with all three having Navarrete ahead -- 77-76, 77-76 and 78-75. The 30-year-old Mexican improved to 40-2 with one draw as he defended his crown for the fourth time. Navarrete had missed the 130-pound weight limit in his first try at the scales but was inside the limit two hours later at a final weigh-in. Suarez, seeking his first world title at the age of 36, fell to 18-1. Suarez was stunned by an accidental clash of heads late in round four. Another clash of heads in the sixth opened a deep gash above Navarrete's left eye, gushing blood impacting his vision and causing the early stoppage in the bout scheduled for 12 rounds. js/dh
