Farmers advised to explore horticulture
He said the welfare of farmers remains the government's foremost priority and extends all kinds of support and assistance.
Participating in the 'Polam Pilustondi' initiative organised at Guntupalli village in Ibrahimpatnam mandal on Tuesday, Dr Lakshmisha planted paddy in the field of farmer G Ravindranath Tagore. Dr Lakshmisha highlighted that every village faces unique challenges. To address these, the district administration is organising 'Polam Pilustondi' programmes every Tuesday and Wednesday to engage directly with farmers, understand their problems, and implement timely solutions.
He outlined the support being provided under this initiative, which includes assistance with supply of seeds, fertilisers, CCRC cards, and crop loans. He said fertilisers are being distributed through a biometric-based online system, and he reassured farmers that there is no shortage of fertilisers in the district.
Encouraging diversification of crops, Dr Lakshmisha advised farmers to explore horticulture along with paddy cultivation. Through the Employment Guarantee Scheme, farmers can establish fruit and flower gardens free of cost and potentially earn two to three times more income.
He shared that the district has set a target of cultivating horticulture crops in 4,000 acres this year, with 3,800 acres already under cultivation. Crops like drumsticks can also be grown along bunds for additional income.
District Agriculture Officer DMF Vijayakumari, AD Srinivasa Rao, Tech AO Vasudev Nayak, Mandal Agriculture Officer Y Rajani, PACS President Ramakrishna, progressive local farmers, and officials from various departments attended the programme.

Vacant Land Tax Committee to recover over Rs 870 crore tax dues in Vijayawada
Vijayawada: Aiming to enhance the tax collection revenue, the NTR district administration has constituted a Vacant Land Tax Committee (VLTC) to collect pending vacant land tax dues from tax payers within Vijayawada Municipal Corporation (VMC) limits. The VLTC will comprise of the revenue wings from both VMC and NTR district administration along with town planning of VMC and district stamps and registration department personnel. It was found that despite Rs 237 crore vacant land tax demand, the civic body managed to collect only Rs 19 crore, totalling a mere 8.18% out of the total vacant land tax from tax payers in the previous 2024-25 financial year in the city. The VMC has around 15,000 vacant land tax assessments across the 64 divisions under three circles in the city. "The vacant land tax collection remains low due to the unavailability of the whereabouts of the original owners. Majority of the taxpayers reside in other places thus tracking and tracing of these vacant land owners is not possible for the municipal corporation personnel due to which the vacant land collection dues are mounting in the VMC," a senior municipal corporation official told TOI. Notices will be served to top 10 tax payers identified under each secretariat," the VMC official said and added that initially the identification of tax defaulters exercise will begin from those secretariats which are having least number of tax defaulters. The official added that the ward secretariat staff of the municipal corporation will be handed over to the revenue and stamps and registration department personnel to find out their address details.

Around 125 PACS under liquidation in State: Amit Shah
New Delhi: As many as 125 out of total 6,291 Primary Agricultural Credit Societies (PACS) in Karnataka are under liquidation, Cooperation Minister Amit Shah informed Parliament on Tuesday. Out of 125 PACS, 28 cooperatives are located in Chikkaballapura, followed by 13 in Hassan and 12 in Belagavi, as per the data placed before the Lok to Shah, there are a total 6,291 PACS in Karnataka, out of which 64 are non-functional/dormant at present, while 125 are under liquidation. In the last five years, 428 new PACS were registered in the state with the highest 187 in Belagavi, he said in a written reply to the Lower House. At an all-India level, 4,964 PACS were registered in 2024-25 fiscal across the country. The minister said National Cooperative Development Corporation (NCDC) disbursed Rs 25.56 crore to PACS in Karnataka in five years till 2024-25. Under a pilot project to construct a grain storage unit, the minister said a 1,000-tonne godown with a processing unit has been constructed at Primary Agriculture Cooperative Federation, Ekamba, Bidar in Karnataka. For computerisation of PACS, the minister said of the 6,582 PACS sanctioned in Karnataka, hardware has been delivered to 5,491 PACS, 3,765 cooperatives have been onboarded onto the ERP system, 1,930 cooperatives are live on Enterprise Resource Planning (ERP) and 1,728 have completed by-end operations. The Centre has released Rs 55.64 crore to Karnataka under the computerisation project, he added.
