Yankees' Stroman allows 1 run in rehab start, Stanton hits RBI double for Double-A Somerset
KANSAS CITY, Mo. (AP) — Yankees right-hander Marcus Stroman allowed just one run over 3 1/3 innings in his first rehab start for Double-A Somerset on Wednesday, while slugger Giancarlo Stanton had another hit in his second rehab appearance with the club.
Stroman had not pitched in a game since landing on the injured list April 12 with left knee inflammation. The 34-year-old two-time All-Star had struggled before that, allowing 12 runs over just 9 1/3 innings covering his first three starts.

'Looks like a good step for him,' Yankees manager Aaron Boone said before his team faced the Royals on Wednesday night.
Stanton went 2 for 3 with a walk and three RBIs in his first rehab game Tuesday night, then went 1 for 3 with an RBI double to center field as the designated hitter in Wednesday's game against Portland.
He's missed the entire season due to tendon injuries in both elbows.
Boone declined to say when Stanton might join the Yankees, who finish their series in Kansas City on Thursday and then head to Boston for three games this weekend. They begin a seven-game homestand against the Angels on Monday night.

'I don't think the plan is for him to play (for Somerset) tomorrow, but we'll kind of get through today and see what the next step is,' Boone said, while acknowledging that Stanton's impending return could result in a roster crunch.
Ben Rice was the DH against the Royals on Wednesday night. He's hitting .240 with 12 homers and 25 RBIs in 57 games.
'It'll be tough decisions every day,' Boone said, 'trying to keep guys that are deserving of playing time playing regularly. But there's going to be some guys out of the lineup on a given day that should be in there, or deserve to be in there, however you want to put it. We'll just do the best we can to make sure we keep everyone sharp and everyone contributing.'
Meanwhile, right-hander Luke Weaver felt good after a throwing session Wednesday at Kauffman Stadium. It was his second bullpen outing as Weaver ramps back up following a left hamstring strain that landed him on the injured list June 3.

'I know he feels really good about it,' Boone said. 'Again, it won't be something we rush or force, but we'll listen to his body and how he's responding. But I would say, yes, it seems to be better than maybe the original thought.'

The colors might have changed, but Petoskey's Speigl is still coming up big in postseason
CHEBOYGAN — In the bottom of the third, with Petoskey down a run and looking for any kind of momentum in an otherwise quiet day against Gaylord Saturday, AJ Speigl stepped to the plate with two outs. The Northmen senior was likely the last player the Blue Devils wanted to see, especially with a player already on second. Advertisement On the third pitch of the at-bat, Speigl showed why that is, driving teammate Haden Janes around to score to tie the game at 1-1 on a two-out double. He then turned to his Petoskey dugout with an emotional roar that ignited the group. What followed behind him in the inning were three more runs, the final two on a two-run shot over center by Tyler Pool. 'That double was just a good opportunity to get things rolling,' Speigl said. 'Then the home run from Tyler Pool after that just shifted the momentum of the game. But it was just a good opporuntity and all the preparation lined up.' 'Once the season started, it wasn't really weird,' he said. 'With all the winter offseason work, the team really invited me in and I've felt like one of the guys. It is weird not playing for Charlevoix this year, but I've felt like the culture and family feel they have over here has been really nice and accepting.' 'I always wish I could have done a little better, but with going up a division, I know we had a pretty tough schedule this year,' Speigl said. 'Taking that all into account, I feel like I've done a pretty good job of meeting my goals.' Moving up and facing the tougher competition excited Speigl entering the season, with plans of already attending Grand Rapids Community College before the season, then again leveling up from there. The challenge continues as regionals begin Wednesday in Cheboygan against Kingsford. "It's always good to have a challenge," Speigl said. "With challenges we all grow. I feel like it's been really beneficial this year to really challenge myself.' Petoskey's AJ Speigl has put together another all-state level season, this time leveling up at the Division 2 ranks after back to back all-state seasons with Charlevoix. While he's happy to lead where he can, Speigl knows it's not just on him. There's seven other players that have started at least 28 games batting .290 or better in the PHS lineup. Petoskey's Joel Wilson named OTA standout by Chicago Bears head coach Ben Johnson
CHICAGO — Chicago Bears head coach Ben Johnson made his way up through the coaching ranks with a focus on tight ends. From being the tight ends coach at Boston College, to the same position with the Miami Dolphins and Detroit Lions, before eventually landing his first head coaching job this NFL offseason with the Bears. In a Thursday, June 6 interview following the third and final day of offseason mandatory minicamp practices, Johnson highlighted Petoskey native and Bears tight end Joel Wilson as one of the unexpected standouts of camp. "You saw him today with a big catch," Johnson said. "He's kind of had one or two of those almost every OTA [practice]." Johnson also highlighted running back Kyle Monangai on offense and defensive end Dominique Robinson and linebacker Ruben Hyppolite on defense. He elaborated more on what's stood out about Wilson. "He's got a little savvy in how he moves," Johnson said. "He's got a nice route feel about him. The test will really be when we get going in camp how he holds up in the run game and the pass pro game. But so far in the running route section of tight end play, he's stood out in a positive light." Undrafted in 2023, Wilson originally signed with the New Orleans Saints, before moving on to practice squad stints with the Bills, Packers and Giants, including half of last season with Chicago. It's a crowed tight end room in Chicago, which only became more congested this offseason when the Bears drafted former Michigan standout Colston Loveland with the No. 10 overall pick. Advertisement The roster also includes sixth-year pro Cole Kmet, along with eight-year veteran Durham Smythe, Stephen Carlson and Jordan Murray. Kmet signed a four-year, $50 million dollar extension in 2023 that runs through 2027, though carries an out after the 2025 season. He holds an $11.6 million cap hit through each of the next three seasons. While mandatory team OTAs are complete, voluntary rookie OTAs in Chicago will start back up from June 9-11.
