Petoskey's Joel Wilson named OTA standout by Chicago Bears head coach Ben Johnson
CHICAGO — Chicago Bears head coach Ben Johnson made his way up through the coaching ranks with a focus on tight ends.
From being the tight ends coach at Boston College, to the same position with the Miami Dolphins and Detroit Lions, before eventually landing his first head coaching job this NFL offseason with the Bears.

Needless to say, Johnson knows what he's looking for in the positon.
In a Thursday, June 6 interview following the third and final day of offseason mandatory minicamp practices, Johnson highlighted Petoskey native and Bears tight end Joel Wilson as one of the unexpected standouts of camp.

A 6-foot, 4-inch former Central Michigan University standout, Wilson signed to the Bears practice squad in October of his second NFL season in 2024, after previous stops in Buffalo, Green Bay and with the New York Giants.

During OTAs, Wilson has stood out with multiple plays made according to Johnson, which included a touchdown catch during two-minute drills and a leaping play made over a defender Thursday.
"You saw him today with a big catch," Johnson said. "He's kind of had one or two of those almost every OTA [practice]."
Johnson also highlighted running back Kyle Monangai on offense and defensive end Dominique Robinson and linebacker Ruben Hyppolite on defense.
He elaborated more on what's stood out about Wilson.
"He's got a little savvy in how he moves," Johnson said. "He's got a nice route feel about him. The test will really be when we get going in camp how he holds up in the run game and the pass pro game. But so far in the running route section of tight end play, he's stood out in a positive light."

It's not a surprise to many who have followed Wilson throughout his career, from being an athletic all-state quarterback and linebacker with Petoskey, to an All-Mid American Conference pass catching tight end under Jim McElwain at CMU.
Undrafted in 2023, Wilson originally signed with the New Orleans Saints, before moving on to practice squad stints with the Bills, Packers and Giants, including half of last season with Chicago.
It's a crowed tight end room in Chicago, which only became more congested this offseason when the Bears drafted former Michigan standout Colston Loveland with the No. 10 overall pick.

The roster also includes sixth-year pro Cole Kmet, along with eight-year veteran Durham Smythe, Stephen Carlson and Jordan Murray.
Kmet signed a four-year, $50 million dollar extension in 2023 that runs through 2027, though carries an out after the 2025 season. He holds an $11.6 million cap hit through each of the next three seasons.
While mandatory team OTAs are complete, voluntary rookie OTAs in Chicago will start back up from June 9-11. Training camp dates in late July have not yet been released.

Cowboys DC Matt Eberflus gives surprising reason for why he returned to Dallas in 2025
Cowboys DC Matt Eberflus gives surprising reason for why he returned to Dallas in 2025 As the NFL coaching carousel hit high gear in early 2025, it was clear Matt Eberflus was going to have options. He had been fired as the Bears head coach just a few months earlier, and his 14-32 overall record in Chicago made it unlikely he'd get many looks for another top job so soon. A return to a defensive coordinator position, however, seemed probable. He'd done the job previously in Indianapolis, taking the Colts from one of the worst defenses in football to top-10 status in short order. And before that, he had served for seven seasons in Dallas, first as linebackers coach and then adding passing game coordinator to his duties. But for all the defensive stars Eberflus has helped to launch over the years- from DeMarcus Ware and Sean Lee to Shaq Leonard and Kenny Moore- it was actually a player on the other side of the ball that finally cemented his decision to return to the Cowboys for a second stint on their sidelines. "Really, to me, it was Dak Prescott," the 55-year-old coordinator told Matt Mosely and Ed Werder on The Doomsday Podcast. "When he was a rookie, we drafted him here, and what did he go, 9-1 the first 10 games?" He did indeed. The 2016 Cowboys made it to 11-1 over Prescott's first 12 games before stumbling twice in the final four weeks to finish 13-3 and with the NFC East crown. But even more than the stellar promise showed by the young Mississippi State passer on the gridiron, it was what Prescott displayed off the field, in the locker room, and in the community that apparently made a lasting impression on Eberflus. And while he acknowledged a close relationship with the Jones family as a big factor in his return, it was the chance to come back and be around a Prescott-led team once again that eventually swayed Eberflus away from other job opportunities. "I know what's inside his heart and what kind of man he is and what kind of leader he is," Eberflus explained of Prescott. "So to me, that was a slam-dunk." Eberflus may have been ready to join the Cowboys staff, but interestingly, Brian Schottenheimer had not yet won the head coaching job. It didn't take much input from other trusted voices in longtime coaching circles, though, to convince Eberflus that the Cowboys' ship would be in good hands under Schotty's command. "I was asking around about him because I knew he was up for the job," Eberflus recalled. "I've got a really good couple of friends that are really good friends with him, and they just said, 'Love him. What a great football mind. What a great guy. He's going to be a great leader.' And so I was all in at that point." Eberflus says he's tried to help Schottenheimer adjust to all the newness of an NFL head coaching job, looking out for what he calls "things as a head coach that you don't know that are involved in the job until you become a head coach." It's a "see-something-say-something" mindset that he says all the Cowboys assistants have adopted as the staff embarks on this first season together. The newness, the talent, the friendly competitions, lining his unit up against Prescott in practice and then being on the same team with him afterward: it's all brought about an energy that Eberflus already says is different from other places he's coached. And maybe that will help bring about a result that's different from where Eberflus- and Prescott- and the Cowboys- have found themselves in recent years. Major Kyrie Irving Injury Update Reveals First Potential Return Date For Mavericks
The Dallas Mavericks are heading into the 2025-26 NBA season with sky-high excitement. After arguably the three worst months in franchise history, during which the franchise took the unpopular decision of trading Luka Doncic, they were handed a billion-dollar lifeboat with Cooper Flagg. The Mavericks were expected to be contenders without Flagg, so their hopes have been greatly bolstered after winning the lottery. However, the Mavericks can't feasibly contend until Kyrie Irving returns to the court. Advertisement Irving tore his ACL during a March game against the Sacramento Kings, and many fear he won't be seen all of next season. However, Shams Charania reports that the 33-year-old point guard is targeting a January 2026 return from the debilitating injury. "Kyrie Irving is targeting sometime in January to make his return." Charania made it clear that the Mavericks are targeting point guards as their No. 1 need this offseason. Their lack of quality play on that front was exposed after the Doncic trade, with Irving's injury greatly exacerbating that deficit. Advertisement Irving was playing at an All-NBA level before tearing his ACL this season, but the Mavericks are remaining optimistic that Kyrie can return next season without missing a beat. If the Mavs do draft Flagg and he lives up to his enormous hype, Irving could be walking into a ready-made contender he'll hope to carry over the line and win a championship with.

PICTURED: Travis Kelce's $20 Million Florida Hideaway Where He's Shaping Up for the NFL Season
Kansas City Chiefs star Travis Kelce and his girlfriend, Taylor Swift, have a plethora of properties between them—yet the NFL pro has seemingly decided to eschew all of them in favor of renting an entirely new abode in Boca Raton, FL, where he is reportedly hunkering down to get in shape for the upcoming football season. Kelce, 35, is said to have taken up residence at an extravagant $20 million mansion in an exclusive gated community, where the Daily Mail reports he is focusing on fitness and health in a bid to retake the Super Bowl championship that he and his team lost in a devastating matchup against the Philadelphia Eagles. Advertisement According to the outlet, Kelce was seen moving into the six-bedroom waterfront mansion in April, when he arrived at the property with his close friend Ross Travis and private chef Kumar Ferguson, as well as a collection of his luxury cars. With rumors circulating that the upcoming NFL season could be Kelce's last, an unnamed insider told the publication that he is focusing his time in the Sunshine State on ensuring he's in the best possible physical and mental condition to go out with a bang. 'Travis is keeping the noise out and putting in the work. If this is his final year in the NFL, he's determined to go out on a high,' the source said. has contacted Kelce's spokesperson for comment. Advertisement To that end, Kelce and his pals are understood to be spending much of their time at the rented property, which was built in 2020 and last sold for $15 million in June 2023. Estimates suggest it could be worth between $18 million and $20 million today. The enormous dwelling, which is located in the Royal Palm Yacht & Country Club, certainly provides a luxurious backdrop for Kelce's rigorous health and fitness program, which is said to include extensive workouts and a strict diet prepared for him especially by Ferguson. According to the Daily Mail, the group heads to the nearby Johnny O's Gym, where Kelce is understood to be training with strength and conditioning coach Andrew Spruill. The workout facility is described as 'South Florida's largest indoor/outdoor training facility' and offers group classes, personal training sessions, and a cold plunge pool. Advertisement Although impressive, those amenities pale in comparison to the ones that Kelce can enjoy inside his rented mansion, which spans 8,341 square feet and boasts six bedrooms, seven bathrooms, and one half-bathroom. 'Get cozy in the master suite next to the quartzite Cristallo linear fireplace wall, and start your day off right with drinks at the morning bar,' a previous listing for the home said of its luxurious aesthetic. 'Private access to a covered balcony provides mesmerizing island views. In the wood-beamed kitchen, Wolf appliances, two porcelain-topped contrasting islands, and a breakfast bar make it easy to whip up something delicious, and with an attached 10-person dining area, there's room for everyone at the table. 'After dark, tuck in for a movie night in the media room, which uses motorized window shades to create a home theater ambiance, and grab a drink from the custom-crafted wooden club bar. A temperature-controlled wine room with a 459-bottle capacity makes storing and serving simple.' Advertisement It's unclear whether Swift, 35, has yet paid a visit to the dwelling. However, Kelce recently took a break from his training to reunite with his girlfriend in Philadelphia for a Mother's Day brunch at the exclusive eatery Talula's Garden. They were joined by Kelce's brother, Jason Kelce, and his wife, Kylie, as well as the Kelce matriarch, Donna. Before that, the duo are said to have enjoyed an Easter getaway at Swift's Rhode Island mansion, where they spent time with the pop star's family. It's not known how long Kelce plans to remain in Florida. He will likely be expected to return to Kansas City by mid-July, which is typically when the Chiefs begin their preseason training camp. Advertisement During the season, Kelce resides in equal luxury—albeit without the balmy temperatures that can be found in the Sunshine State—courtesy of his $6 million mansion, which he snapped up in 2023, shortly after he went public with his romance with Swift, who has since been a regular visitor to the property. The house features six bedrooms, six bathrooms, a chef's kitchen, a formal dining room, a media lounge, a wine cellar, and a full bar. A beautiful pool sits outside alongside manicured lawns. Nearby, there's an outdoor kitchen, tennis and pickleball court, waterfall, hot tub, and miniature golf course. Located inside a gated community, the grand estate sits on nearly 3.5 acres at the end of a cul-de-sac. The mansion is far more secluded than his other home in Kansas City, a 4,200-square-foot mansion in the Briarcliff West neighborhood that he purchased for $995,000 in 2019. Related Articles
