Khandwa fruit vendor's ex-wife, her ex-husband arrested for his murder

Time of India25-05-2025

Indore: A day after a fruit vendor was shot dead in his sleep in Khandwa village, the police on Sunday arrested his ex-wife and her ex-husband for the murder.
The vendor, Amin Khan, 35, was sleeping inside his home with his ex-wife Shahnaz and son when the attack occurred at around 4 am on Saturday.
"Shahnaz was taken into custody for questioning. Investigations revealed that she had unlocked the door of the house to let Akhtar (her ex-husband) inside, who then shot Amin in their home in Borgaon Buzurg. The investigation led to the arrest of Akhtar from Maharashtra and he was brought back to Khandwa for questioning," Pandhana police station in-charge Dilip Dewra said.
Amin had married Shahnaz several years ago, and the couple had four children—two sons and two daughters.
Their relationship, however strained, and about a year ago they got divorced. After separation, Shahnaz reportedly married Akhtar, a resident of Chopda in Jalgaon district of Maharashtra. The relationship between Shahnaz and Akhtar lasted only a few months before Shahnaz allegedly began missing her children.
She obtained a divorce from Akhtar through the court and returned to live with Amin just two months ago.

According to police, after resuming her life with Amin, Shahnaz plotted his murder and contacted Akhtar to carry out the killing. On the night of the incident, Akhtar arrived at the house and entered with Shahnaz's help. Before committing the murder, the accused locked the doors of nearby houses from the outside to prevent neighbours from coming out if they heard the gunshot.
The police said that the children are now with their paternal uncle.

Chander Kunj Towers graft allegation: Kerala HC declines to order CBI probe

Kochi: High court on Monday declined to order a CBI investigation into the alleged corruption behind the dilapidated condition of Towers B and C of the Chander Kunj Army Towers at Silver Sand Island in Vyttila. While disposing of the petition filed by Ciby George, an occupant of the residential towers, seeking a CBI investigation into the alleged corruption in the construction of the towers, Justice P V Kunhikrishnan observed that the court cannot exercise its powers arbitrarily. The court further noted that it need not invoke its discretionary jurisdiction to direct the CBI to register an FIR. It also emphasised that once a criminal case is registered, there can be a direction to entrust the investigation to the CBI. Such directions can be issued only in extraordinary situations. The Chander Kunj Army Towers, completed in July 2018, consist of three towers — Tower A (14 storeys) and Towers B and C (26 storeys each, including a stilt and basement) — comprising a total of 264 dwelling units, along with amenities such as a clubhouse, swimming pool and sewage treatment plant. In Nov 2023, IIT Madras submitted a report highlighting significant corrosion in the concrete due to high chloride content, posing a serious safety risk. by Taboola by Taboola Sponsored Links Sponsored Links Promoted Links Promoted Links You May Like People Born 1940-1975 With No Life Insurance Could Be Eligible For This Reassured Get Quote Undo The report recommended the immediate evacuation of all residents from Towers B and C. Following this, on Feb 3, 2025, the high court ordered the demolition and reconstruction of the two towers. In his petition, George sought a directive to the CBI under Sections 60, 71, and 72 of the Disaster Management Act, 2005, to register a case on the allegation of corruption and complete the investigation in a time-bound manner, prior to the demolition of the affected towers. He also sought a directive to the central govt and chairman of the National Disaster Management Authority (NDMA) to take urgent action under the Act based on his representation and to ensure that those responsible are held accountable in accordance with the law. However, the court rejected these prayers, clarifying that the petitioner is free to pursue his grievance before the appropriate authority.

Property seizure drive: Police target 1,172 criminals in state

Patna: Bihar Police has intensified its drive to confiscate properties acquired through criminal and illegal means across the state. On Monday, director general of police (DGP) Vinay Kumar announced that 1,172 criminals had been identified for asset seizure with court proposals already submitted against 188 of them. The court has so far approved confiscation orders in four cases. The DGP said Bihar has 1,249 police stations and 1,172 criminals who had acquired assets through illegal means had been identified for seizure under Section 107 of the Bharatiya Nagarik Suraksha Sanhita (BNSS). "Proposals were received against 239 of these identified criminals by the sub-divisional police officers (SDPOs) of various districts through the SHOs concerned. Among them, proposals against a total of 212 identified criminals were forwarded by the SDPOs to the senior superintendent of police/superintendent of police (SSPs/SPs). Proposals against 188 identified criminals were sent to the court. Out of the 188 proposals sent, orders were passed by the court to confiscate the assets of criminals under Section 107 of the BNSS in four cases so far," Kumar said. He added that prior to the nationwide implementation of the BNSS in July last year, law enforcement agencies faced challenges in confiscating black money and assets of such criminals. by Taboola by Taboola Sponsored Links Sponsored Links Promoted Links Promoted Links You May Like Giao dịch CFD với công nghệ và tốc độ tốt hơn IC Markets Đăng ký Undo However, new provisions introduced under the BNSS have made the process more effective and accessible. "Earlier, action was mainly taken by the Enforcement Directorate (ED), but due to the ED's busy schedule, there were several bottlenecks in the process of confiscating the assets of criminals. Now, DSP-level officers are empowered to directly propose the confiscation of criminals' black money to the courts," he said. He reiterated that the campaign against corruption continues with a zero-tolerance approach. "From Jan to June 12, 2025, the vigilance bureau caught a dozen police officers red-handed while accepting bribes. In various districts of the state, cases were filed against a total of 22 police officials from Jan to May this year. Out of these, 15 police personnel were arrested and forwarded to court. Also, 66 police personnel were suspended," the DGP said. He added that action is also being taken against repeat offenders released on bail under the Arms Act. If they reoffend, their bail will be cancelled, and this process has already begun. The DGP also highlighted an increase in the pace of FIR registration. "Compared to last year, more FIRs have been registered this year. There is a clear focus on conducting speedy trials and punishing criminals without delay," he said. Addressing concerns around murder rates, Kumar said, "Even a single murder in a year is intolerable as everyone has the right to live. Around 4,000 murders occurred around 2004, whereas today the number is approximately 2,400. When comparing the number of murders from 2004 to 2024, there has been a decline." To ensure timely justice, Kumar said a proposal had been prepared by the state police headquarters to establish 100 fast-track courts across Bihar. "The formation of fast-track courts in all districts is being arranged not only to quickly punish offenders but also to provide immediate justice to the innocent and the victims," he added.
