Motihari: In a raid on Monday, the cyber police cell arrested five members of an organised cybercrime gang that operated out of a private school in Chandwari locality of the town in East Champaran district.
The gang, operating under the code word "Boss" during night hours, created a fake courtroom and defrauded people of lakhs of rupees in the name of digital arrest.
DSP of cyber police station, Abhinav Parasar, said in this major operation, the police recovered Rs 29 lakh in cash and other objectionable materials, exposing a huge network of hawala and cybercrime operating in the district.
Besides cash, the police seized Rs 99,500 Nepali currency, 24 cellphones, seven laptops, two tablets, two revolvers, three currency counting machines, 16 passbooks, 49 ATMs, 37 cheque books and suspicious documents like those from the SBI Dhaka (Bangladesh) branch.
A diary containing details of the daily financial transactions of the gang would prove crucial in unravelling the entire network, he added.
The arrested members of the gang have been identified as Sumit Saurabh, Sanjiv Kumar, Pappu Kumar, Sunil Srivastava and Dipanshu Pandey, who are natives of East Champaran district.
The police said the kingpin of the gang Satyam Saurabh, and his three associates, Ayush, Yash and Ansh, are on the run.

Police said the members of the gang have links with Pakistan and Nepal and earned huge money through cyberfraud. They lured innocent youths with the promise of providing commission and transferred black money into their bank accounts, especially in the SBI Chandwari branch of Motihari.
Police added that the illegal cash was converted into white money by investing it in cryptocurrency through various means. This method helped them escape the eyes of the law.
Police are searching for the kingpin, Satyam, a resident of Raghunathpur locality of the town.

Chandigarh: Online fraud involving fake vehicle auction ads busted, three arrested from Mumbai

The Cyber Crime team of Chandigarh Police has busted an online fraud case involving fake vehicle auction advertisements, arresting three individuals from Mumbai. The FIR no-23, dated March 28, 2025, registered at Cyber Crime police station, originated from a complaint filed by Gurdial Singh, who reported being duped of Rs 14.13 lakh. According to the complainant, he had joined a WhatsApp group, 'Bank Auction Vehicle Group', after receiving an invitation link from an unknown number. After some initial interactions in the group, he finalised a deal with an individual regarding the purchase of two cars allegedly parked in company yards at Haridwar and Jammu. He even verified the locations through personal sources before transferring the amount to various bank accounts shared with him via WhatsApp. However, when his staff visited the respective sites to take delivery of the vehicles, they were informed that the vehicles had not been sold to him. The group administrator subsequently stopped responding and switched off his mobile phone. Acting on the complaint, the Cyber Crime team conducted a raid in Agripada, Mumbai, and arrested one of the accused, Kuranal, alias Kunal Sanjay Bhai Talasaniya. During interrogation, Kunal said that he had opened the bank account used in the fraud on the directions of one Ajay Manubhai Jhamuriya and handed over his KYC documents to him for a 5 per cent commission. Following this lead, the police arrested Ajay from near Satrasta Chowk, Mumbai. He confessed to passing on the KYC documents to another individual, Salman, in exchange for a 7 per cent cut per transaction. Further investigation led to the arrest of another accused, Ronit Kamlesh Jadhav, from Jacob Circle, Mumbai. He admitted that he too had opened a bank account and handed over the credentials to one Tushar for a commission of 5 per cent. During the arrests, the police recovered two mobile phones with active SIM cards that were used to operate the fraudulent activities. The accused are currently in police custody and are being interrogated further to uncover the full extent of the gang's operations and identify other individuals involved in similar cyber crimes. The investigation is ongoing, said the police.

Ship mishap claim: Kerala HC directs registry to deposit money in bank

Kochi: High court on Monday directed the HC registry to deposit the amount of Rs 6 crore, covered by the demand draft provided by the owners of the cargo vessel MSC MANASA F, towards the claim raised by three cashew importing companies for losses suffered due to the capsize of MSC ELSA 3, in a fixed deposit with a nationalised bank for a year. The bench of Justice M A Abdul Hakhim issued the order on petitions filed by five cashew importing companies seeking compensation for the loss of their cargo due to the sinking of the Liberian-flagged cargo vessel MSC ELSA 3 off Kerala coast on May 25. The petitioners had approached the HC with interim prayers to arrest MSC MANASA F, a sister vessel of the sunken ship, which was anchored at Vizhinjam, until the realisation of their claims. Accordingly, on June 12, the bench ordered the arrest of the vessel until the shipping company produced a demand draft for Rs 6 crore before the HC registrar general. On Monday, the owners of the vessel informed HC that the demand draft towards the petitioners' claim had been deposited with the registrar, and the high court registry confirmed the same. Additionally, the owners sought a directive to transfer the amount covered by the demand draft to an interest-bearing account. The court accepted the request and ordered accordingly, before adjourning the petitions. The petitioner companies, based in Kollam, stated in their pleas that they had purchased dried raw cashew nuts from a trading company in Dubai, which were shipped in containers bound for Tuticorin port. According to the petitioners, the consignments were expected to arrive at Tuticorin on May 24 aboard MSC ELSA 3. However, the Indian agent of the shipping company informed them via email on May 28 that the vessel had sunk on May 25 en route from Vizhinjam to Kochi, resulting in the total loss of cargo. This led the companies to file Admiralty suits seeking compensation.
