Dalit youth, father-in-law brutally beaten in Gujarat for ‘upper-caste' moustache; 5 accused on the run
AHMEDABAD: A shocking case of caste-based violence has emerged from Gujarat's Junagadh district, where a Dalit youth and his father-in-law were brutally assaulted for keeping a beard and moustache that their attackers claimed were reserved for "upper castes." The incident, which occurred on August 11 in Khambhaliya (Ozat) village, has sparked outrage, with police registering a case under the SC/ST (Prevention of Atrocities) Act. The victims, identified as Sagar Makwana, a labourer from Mangnath Pipli village, and his father-in-law Jivanbhai Wala, were allegedly attacked by a group of men who hurled casteist slurs and mocked Sagar's appearance. According to the complaint, Sagar had gone to Khambhaliya to get his bike repaired but found the garage closed. As he was returning home, he was stopped near a railway bridge by Shailesh Jebaliya from Navi Chavand village, who allegedly knocked him off his bike and began abusing him for his beard and moustache. Fearing further assault, Sagar called his father-in-law for help. However, when Jivanbhai arrived, a silver car without a number plate pulled up, carrying Lalo Bhupat and three unidentified men. The group allegedly intensified the casteist abuse before launching a violent attack—beating Sagar with a car wheel while punching and slapping Jivanbhai. The assailants fled only after villagers began gathering, but not before issuing threats.

Husband gets justice: Akhilesh sacks MLA for praising Yogi Adityanath
Lucknow: Samajwadi Party (SP) MLA Pooja Pal was expelled from the party on Thursday, hours after she thanked Uttar Pradesh Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath for 'delivering justice' in her husband's mur-der case and praised him for bringing in policies with zero tolerance against criminals. SP chief Akhilesh Yadav said Ms Pooja, whose husband Raju Pal was shot dead by gangster Atiq Ah-med in 2005, was 'immediately expelled' from the party due to her engagement in 'anti-party activ-ities and serious indiscipline which continued despite prior warnings and caused significant harm to the party'. The expulsion created a political uproar with the ruling Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) in the state ac-cusing the opposition of being 'anti-Dalit'. In his statement in Hindi, Yadav said: 'She (Ms Pooja) is no longer permitted to participate in any par-ty programs and will not be invited to them in the future.' The development came hours after Ms Pooja thanked the Chief Minister for 'listening to her when no one else did' over her husband's murder. Former Bahujan Samaj Party (BSP) MLA Raju Pal was shot dead on January 25, 2005, days after he married Ms Pooja. The murder, police said, was a result of political rivalry with gangster Atiq Ahmed's brother Ashraf, whom Raju had defeated in the 2004 bypoll to the Prayagraj West seat. In February 2023, Umesh Pal, a key witness in the murder case, was shot dead in Prayagraj's Sulem Saray area. Days later, Atiq and Ashraf - both of whom were arrested - were shot dead by three men when they were being taken for a medical check-up in Prayagraj. Atiq was shot in the head from behind, nearly at point-blank range. Ashraf, too, was shot dead, as the murder was captured on camera. This came days after Atiq's son Asad was killed in an alleged encounter in Jhansi. All three men were later ar-rested.

Dalit youth dies by suicide, alleges cop assault, caste abuse in Bengaluru
CHIKKAMAGALURU : A Dalit youth from Samse village in Kalasa taluk died by suicide after alleging police assault and caste abuse by Kudremukh police personnel. The deceased, Nagesh of Bastigadde, hanged himself on Wednesday. In a complaint filed earlier at Kudremukh police station, Nagesh had accused constable Siddesh of thrashing him and hurling casteist slurs on July 15. According to the complaint, Nagesh was returning in his autorickshaw around 10.30 pm when he saw Siddesh and two locals standing on the road with their vehicle parked across it. Using his mobile phone torch to navigate, Nagesh approached them, prompting Siddesh to suspect he was filming them drinking alcohol. The constable allegedly assaulted and abused him. Instead of acting on his complaint, police registered a counter-case against Nagesh, accusing him of obstructing a public servant on duty. His autorickshaw and pesticide sprayer were seized, though he later secured bail. Relatives said Nagesh was not financially sound enough to retrieve his vehicle and feared further police harassment. In his death note, Nagesh accused Siddesh of torture and named PSI Adarsh for failing to act on his complaint. Following his death, his relatives staged a protest demanding the dismissal of Siddesh and Adarsh and compensation of Rs 50 lakh for the bereaved family.
