India, Denmark join hands to set up centre of excellence in green shipping
Union Minister of Ports, Shipping and Waterways Sarbananda Sonowal met Denmark's Minister of Industry, Business and Financial Affairs Morten Bodskov in a bilateral meeting here on Friday.

The meeting resulted in the establishment of the Centre of Excellence in Green Shipping, to be established in India.
Both leaders reaffirmed the Green Strategic Partnership and exchanged views on bilateral maritime collaboration.
An MoU was signed between the two countries.
It is intended to improve the quality and efficiency of maritime activities while promoting the green transition of the maritime sector in India.
The ministers underscored this as a new milestone in India-Denmark maritime collaboration with the establishment of a Centre of Excellence in Green Shipping, as outlined in the bilateral Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) on maritime affairs signed in 2024.
Union Minister, Sarbananda Sonowal said, "Under the visionary leadership of Honourable Prime Minister Shri Narendra Modi ji, India is now the 4th largest economy and undertaking several transformative initiatives under our Maritime Amrit Kaal Vision 2047.
These include efforts in port infrastructure, green shipping, shipbuilding, and digitalisation."
"We seek Denmark's participation and investments in these transformative initiatives, where your expertise and leadership in sustainable maritime practices can make a significant impact. We are keen to develop both domestic and international green shipping corridors with Denmark. Identifying suitable routes, developing supportive policy, and building infrastructure will be key," Sonowal added.

The two ministers reaffirmed the Green Strategic Partnership, as mutually agreed upon by Prime Minister Narendra Modi Denmark counterpart, Mette Frederiksen.
The Ministers highlighted the importance of the bilateral Memorandum of Understanding on maritime affairs signed in 2024, which encompasses establishing the Centre of Excellence (CoE) in Green Shipping.
The ministers highlighted alignment with targets set out in the Government of India's Amrit Kaal Vision 2047, including India's ambitions to become a green shipping hub for the international maritime sector.
A Letter of Intent (LOI) was signed between the National Maritime Heritage Complex (NMHC), Lothal, and the Maritime Museum of Denmark, Elsinore, to increase collaboration in the preservation and valorisation of cultural heritage related to maritime heritage. The LOI established a framework for cooperation to study, exchange, or showcase common maritime heritage, share technical know-how, and conduct joint research on common maritime heritage.
Adding further, Sarbananda Sonowal said, "We appreciate Denmark's engagement through the Joint Working Group on Shipping and the India-Nordic Summit. The Joint Action Plan on Green Strategic Partnership provides a strong framework to drive all this forward. Our maritime cooperation is built on mutual trust, shared values, and a common vision for a sustainable and future-ready maritime sector. Our joint efforts will also contribute meaningfully to global maritime sustainability and innovation.

Both sides discussed possible ways and means to deepen bilateral maritime relations spanning green shipping, decarbonisation, maritime training and education, green fuel and technology collaboration, and ship recycling. India has proposed that the National Centre of Excellence for Green Port and Shipping (NCoEGPS) and the Danish Maritime Authority (DMA) begin joint work on certifications and launch collaborative research focused on energy efficiency technologies.
It also proposed that the Indian Ports Association (IPA) coordinate with the Port of Aarhus to develop smart port solutions.
These innovative models can later be adapted and scaled across ports in India to enhance operational efficiency and sustainability.
"Digital transformation is a shared goal between us. Denmark's use of technologies like blockchain for ship registries and automation in port operations is closely aligned with our Maritime India Vision 2030 and Amrit Kaal Vision 2047," added Sarbananda Sonowal during the meeting.
The CoE is intended to improve the quality and efficiency of maritime activities while promoting the green transition of the maritime sector in India. Both parties identified the Maersk McKinney Moller Center for Zero Carbon Shipping (MMMCZCS) and the National Centre of Excellence for Green Port and Shipping (NCoEGPS) as key institutions to formulate a specific project plan for the development of a Green Corridor.
Indo-Danish CoE will contribute to the development of green corridors through a pre-feasibility study. The study will serve as a preliminary assessment of the main components of possible green corridors in India and outline the most promising ones.

A total of 344.47 million people were living in extreme poverty in India during 2011-12, which has come down to about 75.24 million people during 2022-23. According to the World Bank data, as a significant progress in India, 269 million individuals were lifted out of extreme poverty in about 11 years. 65 percent of India's extremely poor people lived in five states of Uttar Pradesh, Maharashtra, Bihar, West Bengal and Madhya Pradesh during 2011-12. At the same time, these states contributed to two-thirds of the total decline in extreme poverty by 2022-23. The latest World Bank data shows that in absolute terms, the number of people living in extreme poverty has fallen from 344.47 million to just 75.24 million. The World Bank's assessment is based on the international poverty line of $3.00 per day (using 2021 prices), which shows widespread deprivation in both rural and urban areas. According to World Bank estimates, the share of Indians living in extreme poverty at $2.15 per day (the previous poverty line based on 2017 prices) is 2.3 percent, down sharply from 16.2 percent recorded in 2011-12. According to the latest data, the number of people living below the poverty line of $2.15 per day is recorded at 33.66 million in 2022 from 205.93 million in 2011. The data also revealed that this sharp decline was observed uniformly, with rural extreme poverty declining from 18.4 per cent to 2.8 per cent and urban extreme poverty declining from 10.7 per cent to 1.1 per cent in the last 11 years. Moreover, India has also made tremendous progress in reducing multidimensional poverty. According to the data, the Multidimensional Poverty Index (MPI) declined from 53.8 per cent in 2005-06 to 16.4 per cent by 2019-21 and further declined to 15.5 per cent in 2022-23.

Two more held in Assam for anti-national, communal acts after Pahalgam attack; total arrests rise to 90
GUWAHATI: Two more persons have been arrested in Assam in an ongoing crackdown on "anti-national and communal elements", Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma said on Saturday. With these, the number of arrests in such cases in the wake of the Pahalgam terror attack has reached 90. "Update on crackdown against Anti-national and communal elements - 7 Jun - 90 arrests till now," Sarma said in a post on X. One person has been apprehended by Goalpara police for making "offensive social media post on Lord Ram", and another by Kamrup police for "inciting communal discord" through social media. The state police have been taking action against people for "anti-India" and "pro-Pakistan" activities, including posts on social media, since the April 22 Pahalgam terror attack, in which 26 people were killed. Among those arrested on the anti-national charge was opposition AIUDF MLA Aminul Islam. He was initially arrested on sedition charges for allegedly "defending" Pakistan and its complicity in the Pahalgam attack. After he secured bail in that case, he was held under the stringent National Security Act. Sarma had earlier said that the state-wide crackdown on traitors would continue.

Prime Minister Narendra Modi has flagged off the train on June 6 before Bakrid. It is the first train connection between the Kashmir Valley and the Jammu region. Now, passengers will reach Srinagar from Katra in just 3 hours. If you are worried about the security during the travel to a sensitive place like Kashmir, then don't worry because this Vande Bharat Train will operate with high security. Security of Katra-Srinagar Vande Bharat Express The Indian Railways has made special arrangements for the Katra-Srinagar Vande Bharat express. The train has been secured like an impenetrable fortress, with armed commandos will be deployed to protect it. CORAS, commandos of the Railway Protection Force (RPF), have been deployed to protect Vande Bharat trains on the Udhampur-Srinagar-Baramulla railway line. As many as 20 commandos and a supervisor will be present in every Vande Bharat train to protect the passengers. These jawans will be equipped with AK-47 assault rifles and other weapons. Soldiers Deployed To Protect The Tunnel Security has been tightened along the entire Katra-Srinagar train route. This includes round-the-clock armed soldier patrols at both tunnel entrances and continuous CCTV surveillance inside and outside each tunnel. All trains operating on this route will be escorted by commandos. Keeping in mind the safety of passengers, these trains will be run only during the day. No train will operate at night. As per Railway officials, this will be the first time that CORAS will be deployed in a train. Entry After Security Check Enhanced security measures are in place for the Vande Bharat Express train travelling to Kashmir. This includes heightened security for the train itself, as well as the tunnels, Chenab Bridge, and Anji Bridge along its route. Passengers and their luggage will undergo security checks and scans before boarding at Platform 1 in Katra. Valid identification is required, and luggage will be X-rayed. Boarding will only be permitted after the completion of these security procedures.
