Modi govt's big achievement in 11 years, extreme poverty rate drops to..., extremely poor people are from states like...., world bank says...
According to the latest data of the World Bank, as an important achievement under the Prime Minister Narendra Modi, India has made progress in reducing its extreme poverty rate in the last decade. The extreme poverty rate in the country has been recorded to have come down from 27.1 percent in 2011-12 to 5.3 percent in 2022-23. A total of 344.47 million people were living in extreme poverty in India during 2011-12, which has come down to about 75.24 million people during 2022-23. According to the World Bank data, as a significant progress in India, 269 million individuals were lifted out of extreme poverty in about 11 years.
65 percent of India's extremely poor people lived in five states of Uttar Pradesh, Maharashtra, Bihar, West Bengal and Madhya Pradesh during 2011-12. At the same time, these states contributed to two-thirds of the total decline in extreme poverty by 2022-23. The latest World Bank data shows that in absolute terms, the number of people living in extreme poverty has fallen from 344.47 million to just 75.24 million.
The World Bank's assessment is based on the international poverty line of $3.00 per day (using 2021 prices), which shows widespread deprivation in both rural and urban areas. According to World Bank estimates, the share of Indians living in extreme poverty at $2.15 per day (the previous poverty line based on 2017 prices) is 2.3 percent, down sharply from 16.2 percent recorded in 2011-12.
According to the latest data, the number of people living below the poverty line of $2.15 per day is recorded at 33.66 million in 2022 from 205.93 million in 2011. The data also revealed that this sharp decline was observed uniformly, with rural extreme poverty declining from 18.4 per cent to 2.8 per cent and urban extreme poverty declining from 10.7 per cent to 1.1 per cent in the last 11 years. Moreover, India has also made tremendous progress in reducing multidimensional poverty. According to the data, the Multidimensional Poverty Index (MPI) declined from 53.8 per cent in 2005-06 to 16.4 per cent by 2019-21 and further declined to 15.5 per cent in 2022-23.

Harsimrat writes to EAM, wants UAE govt to be sensitised on Sikhs' five articles of faith
Chandigarh, Senior Shiromani Akali Dal leader Harsimrat Kaur Badal on Saturday urged External Affairs Minister S Jaishankar to initiate a dialogue with the UAE government to sensitise it about the religious significance of the five articles of faith, especially the 'kirpan', for the initiated Sikhs. In a letter to the minister, the Bathinda MP said she was making this appeal in the wake of a recent "advisory" by the Indian Embassy in UAE directing Indians not to carry sharp objects while visiting the country in view of Article 405 of the UAE penal law which prohibits the same. This move has caused deep distress and mental agony to Sikh travellers and residents alike, Harsimrat said, noting that there have been instances of Sikhs being detained and compelled to remove their 'kirpan'. She also cited a recent case of an elderly man being detained in Abu Dhabi for wearing the 'kirpan' and turban. Badal asserted in her letter that such incidents had caused distress within the Sikh community as they contravened the rights of Sikhs to practice their faith besides raising serious concerns about the protection of religious freedom for minorities in the UAE. "The Sikh community has always contributed positively to societies worldwide, including in the UAE, and demand the freedom to practice its faith in accordance with its tenets. "Denying Sikhs the right to wear their five 'kakkars' , particularly the 'kirpan', is a curtailment of religious freedom and contrary to the principles of mutual respect and pluralism that India stands for," she said. The former union minister also requested Jaishankar to consider sending a high-level delegation, including representatives from the National Commission for Minorities and the Shiromani Gurdwara Parbandhak Committee , to engage with UAE authorities and relevant international agencies and sensitise them about Sikh articles of faith. She asserted that the 'kirpan' was a sacred symbol and an inseparable part of Sikh identity mandated by Sikh tenets since the time of Guru Gobind Singh. "Its significance is spiritual and symbolic, representing the duty to uphold justice and protect the oppressed, and not as a weapon for aggression or harm. The 'kirpan' is worn at all times by 'Amritdhari' Sikhs as a matter of religious obligation and conscience", she added.

Global leaders convene in France to boost coastal disaster resilience
The seventh International Conference on Disaster Resilient Infrastructure (ICDRI) opened in France's Nice on Saturday, gathering over 350 delegates from governments, UN agencies and development banks to focus on building disaster-resilient infrastructure for coastal regions and Small Island Developing States (SIDS).With 37 per cent of the world's population living within 100 km of the coast and 90 per cent of global goods transported by sea, the stakes are high. Coastal economies contribute USD 1.5 trillion annually to global GDP, a figure expected to double by year's ICDRI, themed 'shaping a resilient future for coastal regions', is the first to be held in Europe and is co-hosted by the Coalition for Disaster Resilient Infrastructure (CDRI) and the French government. The conference zeroes in on three pillars: improving access to finance, leveraging data and technology for early warning systems, and strengthening codes and standards for infrastructure resilience. In his virtual address, Prime Minister Narendra Modi stressed the urgency of global action, noting the heightened risks faced by coastal and island communities due to disasters and climate change. "Let us build infrastructure that stands firm against time and tide, creating a stronger, more resilient future for all," he Modi also outlined five global priorities, including workforce skills, innovative financing and a digital repository for best from SIDS echoed the call for urgent support.
