Samson seeks exit from Rajasthan Royals before IPL 2026 auction; Franchise yet to decide

Rajasthan Royals' (RR) captain Sanju Samson has informed the franchise that he wants to be released ahead of the Indian Premier League (IPL) 2026 auction. Samson conveyed his decision to the RR management soon after the conclusion of IPL 2025, ESPNcricinfo reported. While the Royals held their season review meetings in June, they haven't yet responded to Samson's request. There's still a possibility that the franchise might try to persuade him to stay. Lead owner Manoj Badale declined to comment on the matter. However, the final call will be taken jointly by Badale and head coach Rahul Dravid. If RR agree to release Samson, they could either trade him to another franchise or let him go into the auction pool. According to IPL contract, the franchise has the final say in such situations. A potential trade could be in the form of a player swap or an all cash deal. The 30-year-old first represented RR from 2013 to 2015, and returned in 2018 after a couple of seasons with Delhi Daredevils. He took over as captain in 2021, and in 2022 led the team to the IPL final, their first since the inaugural title win in 2008. Samson was among six players retained by the Royals with a tag of Rs 18 crore. RR have around two months to take a final decision on Samson, as the retention deadline is in November. (ANI)

Labuschagne to open for Australia, South Africa retain Mulder

Agencies London Marnus Labuschagne will open the batting for Australia in the World Test Championship final against South Africa at Lord's, starting on Wednesday, reports Labuschagne has never opened in Test cricket and moves up from number three, which will be occupied by the returning Cameron Green. In moving to the top of the order, Labuschagne becomes Usman Khawaja's fifth different opening partner since David Warner retired at the beginning of 2024. All-rounder Beau Webster keeps his place at number six and Josh Hazlewood gets the nod over fellow pace bowler Scott Boland. South Africa have preferred Lungi Ngidi to Dane Paterson in their pace attack, while Kagiso Rabada plays his first Test after serving a one-month ban for cocaine use earlier this year. Australia are looking to defend the title the won by beating India in the final at The Oval two years ago. The rotating cast of openers used since Warner called time on his Test career has included Steve Smith, Nathan McSweeney, Travis Head and Sam Konstas. While Smith and Head are back in their usual middle-order slots, 19-year-old Konstas has been overlooked, as has Leeds-born Josh Inglis, who made a century on debut against Sri Lanka in February. All-rounder Green has been out with a back injury and returns as a specialist batter. His presence creates a logjam in the middle-order, meaning Labuschagne is asked to move up. The 31-year-old has been in indifferent form, having not made a Test hundred since the fourth Ashes Test of 2023. With competition for places high, he is fighting to retain his spot for the Ashes series in Australia later this year. After the final, Australia head to the Caribbean for three Tests against West Indies. Labuschagne has previously opened on 15 occasions in first-class cricket, but not since 2016. 'With Marnus moving, we thought it's one spot up really. It's not too different to batting three,' said Australia captain Pat Cummins. 'Marnus has experience, he has done well here at Lord's and in England in general.' The bowling picture was made clear once Hazlewood, who has struggled with injuries in the recent past, proved his fitness. The 34-year-old missed the final two years ago, but arrives in London after being part of the Royal Challengers Bengaluru team that won the Indian Premier League. He joins a familiar-looking attack including fellow seamer Cummins, left-armer Mitchell Starc and off-spinner Nathan Lyon. Webster can provide support with either seam or off-spin. Proteas aim for glory at last South Africa are aiming to finally to get their hands on a senior global title after a string of near-misses. Most recently the Proteas were beaten in the final of the men's T20 World Cup in 2024, when the game against India was in their grasp. Their route to the final, and therefore the format of the Championship itself, has been questioned. South Africa finished top of the table having played 12 Tests, compared to the 19 of Australia and India, and 22 of England. Nevertheless, Temba Bavuma's men have the opportunity to become only the third team crowned Test champions, after Australia and inaugural winners New Zealand. They have retained all-rounder Wiann Mulder at number three, with his option to bowl seam influencing the decision to select Ngidi over Paterson. 'It's probably one of the tougher decisions that has been made,' said captain Bavuma. 'But it was more from a tactical point of view. There's probably a little bit more pace from Lungi, he's a bit taller as well. 'He will complement that bowling attack a little more. We have a guy like Mulder, who can give us something similar like Patto.' Teams Australia XI: Usman Khawaja, Marnus Labuschagne, Cameron Green, Steve Smith, Travis Head, Beau Webster, Alex Carey (wk), Pat Cummins (c), Mitchell Starc, Josh Hazlewood, Nathan Lyon. South Africa XI: Aiden Markram, Ryan Rickelton, Wiaan Mulder, Temba Bavuma (c), Tristan Stubbs, David Bedingham, Kyle Verreynne (wk), Marco Jansen, Keshav Maharaj, Kagiso Rabada, Lungi Ngidi.

Kohli ‘absolutely gutted' as 11 die in Bengaluru cricket stadium stampede

Virat Kohli said he was lost for words after celebrations of a dream IPL title turned to tragedy, when 11 mainly young cricket fans were crushed to death in Bengaluru. Hundreds of thousands had packed the streets on Wednesday to welcome home their hero Kohli and the Royal Challengers Bengaluru (RCB) after they had beaten Punjab Kings a day earlier in a thrilling Indian Premier League final. But the euphoria of the vast crowds in the southern tech city of Bengaluru ended in disaster, with Prime Minister Narendra Modi calling it 'absolutely heartrending'. Karnataka state Chief Minister Siddaramaiah said most of the 11 dead were young people, and 47 others were injured in the crush after a stampede near the city's M. Chinnaswamy cricket stadium, where the players were parading the trophy for fans. Kohli, who top-scored in the final, said earlier it had been 'as much for the fans' after the 36-year-old finally celebrated winning the IPL at his 18th attempt. Later, Kohli wrote on social media: 'At a loss for words. 'Absolutely gutted,' he added, alongside a statement from the RCB team saying they were 'deeply anguished' at what had unfolded. One of the people injured described to the AFP news agency how a 'huge crowd' had crushed her. 'They stamped on me,' said the woman, who did not give her name, from a wheelchair. 'I was not able to breathe. I fell unconscious.' Most of the dead were young fans who had gone out just to catch a glimpse of their sporting heroes. Street food vendor Manoj Kumar mourned the death of his 18-year-old son, killed in the stampede, who he said he had stopped from working on his stall so he could study. 'I wanted him to go to college,' Kumar told The Indian Express newspaper. 'I brought him up with a lot of care. Now, he is gone.' A grieving mother outside a city mortuary said her 22-year-old engineering student son had also died in the crush. 'He was crazy about RCB,' she was quoted as saying by the Indian Express on Thursday. 'He died in an RCB shirt. They danced when RCB won and now he is gone. Can RCB give him back to us?' Authorities had already called off RCB's proposed open-top bus victory parade through the streets after anticipating vast crowds. But organisers pressed ahead with the welcome ceremony and celebrations inside the stadium. RCB's social media account posted a video of cheering crowds lining the streets as the players waved back from their team bus on their way to the stadium. The team said they cut short the celebrations 'immediately upon being made aware of the situation'. Siddaramaiah said the stadium had a capacity of 'only 35,000 people, but 200,000-300,000 people came'. Earlier, Bengaluru had erupted in midnight celebrations after their team RCB, who scored 190-9, restricted Punjab to 184-7 and won the world cricket's most lucrative tournament on Tuesday night. India's IPL mega-tournament final was watched by 91,000 fans packed into the stadium in Ahmedabad – and many millions more on television. Bengaluru fans celebrated wildly after their hero Kohli and RCB clinched victory for the first time in the 18 years of the IPL, their three previous finals having all ended in defeat. Deadly crowd incidents are a frequent occurrence at Indian mass events such as religious festivals due to poor crowd management and safety lapses. A stampede at India's Kumbh Mela religious fair in January this year killed 30 people and injured several others. In July last year, 121 people were killed in northern Uttar Pradesh state during a Hindu religious gathering.
