Jake Paul refused to take Oleksandr Usyk's advice to quit the sport before his bout with Mike Tyson last year, and has set them on a potential collision course.
'The Problem Child' faced boxing veteran Tyson in a Netflix-streamed match that garnered worldwide attention. Some sporting circles criticised Paul for agreeing to a fight against 58-year-old Tyson, who was climbing back into the ring for his first professional fight since 2005.
Originally set for July, the fight was postponed to November due to health concerns surrounding Tyson. Before the controversial bout, heavyweight champion Usyk shared his opinion on Paul's venture into boxing during a word association game, responding with a two-word reply: "Stop boxing."
Despite entering the ring with Tyson holding a 10-1 professional record, most of Paul's victories were against ex-UFC fighters and social media personalities. Regardless of criticism directed towards his boxing journey, Paul has persisted in honing his skills and seeking high-profile adversaries. His only defeat came in a split decision loss to Tommy Fury, brother of Tyson Fury, in 2023.
Paul readied himself for Tyson by securing a TKO victory over BKFC fighter Mike Perry, a replacement opponent for his original July date with Tyson. The showdown between Paul and Tyson eventually took place four months later, with the social media sensation clinching a unanimous decision win over Tyson in a match that left many spectators underwhelmed.
Netflix reported that the fight was viewed live by 108 million people worldwide. Despite the considerable age difference between the two fighters, Paul celebrated his triumph over the boxing icon. Tyson, on the other hand, has no immediate plans to step back into the ring.

Paul's next opponent is another former world champion. The 28-year-old is set to square off against Julio Cesar Chavez Jr, who held the WBC middleweight title in 2011, on June 28 in Anaheim, California.
A victory over the son of boxing legend Julio Cesar Chavez could pave the way for Paul to ascend the cruiserweight rankings, given his desire to secure a world title. However, a crossover fight with Usyk has also been suggested.
The unified heavyweight champion previously shared an image of a potential MMA bout between himself and Paul on his social media. Paul, who is contracted to the PFL but has yet to make his MMA debut, responded to the post with a poll asking if the crossover fight should go ahead.

Usyk has revealed that he's approaching the end of his time in the boxing ring, with talk from his camp of potentially exploring new challenges. "Usyk has always cared only about fighting the best and creating a lasting legacy in the great sport of boxing," Sergey Lapin said to OLBG.
"But in the future, as he further solidifies his place as one of the true great fighters, we'll see what other opportunities open up for him. It might be great to step into the cage with Jake Paul under MMA rules, it would be interesting if there is money to be made from it. Also, we never say never about fighting the dangerous Alex Pereira, possibly partnered with Dana White."
Currently, Usyk's focus is locked on his upcoming undisputed heavyweight championship bout against Daniel Dubois. Scheduled for July 19 at Wembley Stadium, this marks a rematch following their first fight in 2023.

In the meantime, Paul is setting his sights on Chavez Jr, but could face a range of opponents later this year, including a rematch with Fury and has even called out Anthony Joshua. "I want to fight everybody, and I'm going to get to all opponents," Paul explained, as reported by talkSPORT.
"There's a line, but the majority of the time I want to pick the biggest and toughest challenges that people don't think I'm going to win, so I can prove them wrong and shock the world time and time again. There are a lot of people knocking on the door, and I just want to continue to grow my skillset.
"My path to becoming world champion, that is still the goal. I want to become one of the best boxers in the world, do big fights and make the fans happy."

Alex Pereira breaks silence on 'retirement' jibe with nine-word message
The former light-heavyweight champion is hoping to return to action later this year despite Magomed Ankalaev's claims that the Brazilian is 'retired' Alex Pereira has clapped back at Magomed Ankalaev, expressing his desire to make a comeback to the octagon later this year. The Brazilian was on the receiving end of a surprise loss to Ankalaev at UFC 313 earlier this year. The build-up to their light-heavyweight bout was marred by a war of words, with tensions running high and nearly boiling over before they even stepped into the cage. Since clinching the 205lb title, Ankalaev is desperate to stay active inside the cage and has continued to carry on his rivalry with 'Poatan'. The Russian accused the Pereira camp of stalling negotiations and believes that the former light-heavyweight king is 'retired.' Despite the post-UFC 313 drama, Pereira is keen to even the score and win back the gold strap. In a recent interview with UFC Brazil, the 37-year-old set the record straight regarding the status of his second bout with Ankalaev. "We'll definitely be talking about my next fight soon," he said. "I don't have a specific date yet, but we already have an idea. I took this time off to rest, because I worked hard in 2024. I think my body got tired, I had some injuries, so I decided to take it easy, more on the recovery side, and now I'm coming back. To come back [the right way]: firm and strong, to go after my belt again." Ankalaev recently stated that he had agreed to fight Pereira in June, July and August, following reports that both fighters had consented to a rematch. Despite his insistence that the Brazilian is 'done,' it appears likely that the Russian's first title defence will be an immediate sequel against the knockout artist. The Russian's remarks came just weeks after the Brazilian fan-favourite claimed he was 'hacked' on X, following a post suggesting he had threatened UFC CEO Dana White with retirement. "I don't even know what's going on. I have a great relationship with the UFC," said Pereira. Daniel Cormier, who shares a good relationship with 'Poatan', didn't buy his response. "Pereira is a liar," Cormier declared. "Pereira did not get hacked yesterday. "Pereira might have tweeted something and then somebody called him and was like, 'Yo, calm down. Let's chill.' I don't believe the hack thing, mate. It's too convenient. It was very unusual. It was too specific. He didn't use profanity. It kind of sounded like Pereira." Pereira had posted: "I always answered the UFC's calls. But if they want to play with me, we can do that. I've never spoken poorly of the UFC but with what I've just heard I'm disheartened. I've already had thoughts of not fighting anymore, and after what was just relayed to me this may be the start." 'Poatan,' however, is now back in training and appears to be preparing for his return to the cage. The rematch was initially suggested to take place at UFC 318 in Chicago, before the announcement of the Dricus du Plessis vs Khamzat Chimaev headliner by the promotion. Now, the earliest possible date for this fight could be September at UFC 319.

Ex-West Lothian footballer jailed after £600k drug smuggling plot
Our community members are treated to special offers, promotions and adverts from us and our partners. You can check out at any time. More info An ex-Arsenal academy footballer has been jailed for four years for his involvement in a £600,000 drug smuggling plot after a court heard his financial difficulties after a period out of contract led to a "catastrophic error of judgment". Jay Emmanuel-Thomas was arrested after officers from the National Crime Agency seized an estimated £600,000 of cannabis as it was being brought through Stansted Airport by two women he had recruited - his girlfriend and her friend. An earlier hearing at Chelmsford Crown Court in Essex was told the women believed they were importing gold. But Border Force officers detected roughly 60kg (132lb) of the drug in two suitcases, which had arrived in the UK from Bangkok, Thailand, via Dubai. The 34-year-old striker, of Cardwell Road in Gourock, Inverclyde, was arrested in the town in September 2024. He pleaded guilty at an earlier hearing to fraudulent evasion of the prohibition on the importation of cannabis between July 1 2024 and September 2 2024. Emmanuel-Thomas was sacked by Scottish Championship side Greenock Morton after his arrest last year. Prosecutor David Josse KC told Chelmsford Crown Court the "interception" of the two women - Emmanuel-Thomas's girlfriend Yasmin Piotrowska and her friend Rosie Rowland - happened at the airport. He said it "became apparent this defendant, Jay Emmanuel-Thomas, had been involved in their recruitment to travel to Thailand". He noted Emmanuel-Thomas "had played a few games, 11 in total, for a club in Thailand". The barrister said Emmanuel-Thomas had "some awareness and understanding of the scale of the operation" and was acting in an "operational management function" in the plot. He pointed out the defendant's "relationship with Ms Piotrowska" when describing the recruitment of the two women. The footballer, whose former clubs include Ipswich, Bristol City, QPR, Livingston, Aberdeen and Thai side PTT Rayong, was sentenced on Thursday. Sign up for Edinburgh Live newsletters for more headlines straight to your inbox The bearded defendant wore a grey suit jacket and black shirt, with his long hair swept back as he listened to proceedings from the secure dock. Ms Piotrowska sat in the public gallery and wept for much of the hearing. Alex Rose, for Emmanuel-Thomas, said: "The financial gain in this case for Mr Emmanuel-Thomas was £5,000." Mr Rose said the defendant was a father-of-two and had made a "catastrophic error of judgment". He said a "period of being out of contract led to very significant financial hard times" and he "succumbed to temptation". "Although he had previously experienced periods of being in between contracts or - putting it another way - being unemployed as a footballer, they had largely been on the back of fairly lucrative long-term contracts," said Mr Rose. He said the "situation was rather different in the background to this". "Having been out of contract prior to signing for Greenock Morton, he had a brief contract with Kidderminster Harriers but that was very much a short-term contract, almost to try to assist someone he had a good relationship with," he said. Mr Rose continued: "His football career is finished and that's something he has brought entirely on himself. "It's a devastating blow for somebody who had such promise and such an impressive football career." Judge Alexander Mills, jailing Emmanuel-Thomas for four years, said: "It's through your own action that you will no longer be known for playing professional football. "You will be known as a criminal. A professional footballer who threw it all away." The judge said Emmanuel-Thomas had played five games for Greenock Morton and was on a £600 per week contract at the time of the incident. He said the defendant "recruited" his girlfriend and her friend and was "essentially turning the importation of cannabis into an all-expenses paid holiday in the Far East", arranging business class flights, hotel costs and discussing in messages how to maximise their time on the Thai island of Ko Samui. Emmanuel-Thomas looked straight ahead as the judge read out his sentence. He nodded towards the public gallery as he was led to the cells. Ms Piotrowska, 33, of Purves Road, Kensal Rise, north-west London, and Ms Rowland, 29, of Southend Road, Chelmsford, Essex, denied the charge and at an earlier hearing prosecutors offered no evidence in their case. Mr Josse said at an earlier hearing that the women "said they thought they were importing gold not cannabis", and the judge directed that not guilty verdicts be recorded for them.

Emmanuel-Thomas, 34, was playing for Morton at the time of his arrest in September last year. He was subsequently sacked by the Championship club. Last month, he pleaded guilty at Chelmsford Crown Court to fraudulent evasion of the prohibition on the importation of cannabis between July 1, 2024 and September 2, 2024. He was remanded in custody and was sentenced today. Emmanuel-Thomas has been jailed for four years. Judge Alexander Mills told the striker: "It is through your own actions you will no longer be known as a professional footballer." "You will be known as a criminal. A professional footballer who threw it all away." London-born Emmanuel-Thomas came through the academy system at Arsenal. He made it all the way to the first team and appeared in the Premier League. After a series of loan spells, Emmanuel-Thomas enjoyed spells with Ipswich, Bristol City and QPR. He had a spell abroad before joining Livingston in 2020. Emmanuel-Thomas, nicknamed JET, impressed and earned a move to Aberdeen. However, he couldn't replicate his success at Pittodrie and left after less than a year. He failed to score a league goal for the Dons. Emmanuel-Thomas returned to Scotland on a short-term deal in July 2024 before being sacked in mid-September after being charged over his role in the drugs plot. The court heard that the drugs were brought into the UK by the striker's girlfriend, Yasmin Piotrowski. She and Rosie Rowland had flown business class to Stansted on September 2. Emmanuel-Thomas was linked to the discovery by WhatsApp messages, voice notes and pictures. The court was told it was "apparent" he had recruited the women, who were cleared after prosecutors offered no evidence in their case. Emmanuel-Thomas had offered the women £2,500 plus a free holiday to Thailand. After Piotrowska was stopped by border officials, Emmanuel-Thomas messaged Rowland to tell her to "delete everything from our chat if you can". The footballer then travelled to East London on September 5 and replaced his mobile phone. He was dismissed by Morton a couple of weeks later when the situation came to light.
