Fairphone is going all out to make its next phone truly modular

Phone Arena11 hours ago

Fairphone is a rather unique company in the smartphone space. The Dutch electronics manufacturer is one of the few that specializes in modular smartphones, a type of devices that heavily minimizes environmental impact because companies that make them typically use recycled materials.
In addition to modular smartphones, Fairphone also provides replacement parts for its smartphones. The company's most recent product, Fairphone 5, made its debut back in April 2024. Because its phones are meant to be kept for longer periods of time, Fairphone promises five major OS updates and 10 years of security updates. The next Fairphone device will be even more customizable, at least according to the latest report from WinFuture.de. The German website got their hands on a picture showing the front part of the Fairphone 6, but the most important difference compared to the previous models would only be visible on the back side.Fairphone 6 is supposed to feature a modular back panel, allowing owners to customize their phone to look the way they want. Apart from the fact that the phone will be available in three different colors – Horizon Black, Cloud White, and Forest Green, Fairphone 6 will also feature a two-part back cover, so the upper and lower covers could be of different colors.

Fairphone will sell interchangeable accessories through different partner retailers, including a card holder, a lanyard, and a ring that's supposed to make holding the device comfier. Unfortunately, no details about its specs are known at the moment except for the fact that it will pack at least 8GB RAM and 256GB internal storage. Also, Dutch publication Nieuwe Mobiel claims Fairphone 6 could be officially introduced on June 25.
As far as the price goes, Fairphone 6 is rumored to cost as low as €550, a much lower amount compared to Fairphone 5's €700 price tag. It's unclear if Murena will bring this model to the United States like it did with the Fairphone 4 model two years ago, but one can only hope.

Smartphones now dominate global web traffic, latest data shows

Smartphones are ruling in terms of global web traffic, with a new report today revealing that 64% of all of it actually comes from smartphones. This isn't a huge surprise, of course, given how prevalent smartphones have become and how, if you have one, it's very likely to be the main device with which you browse the web, but at least we now have an actual percentage to speak about. The shift from desktops and laptops to smartphones is an ongoing digital trend now, and mobile web traffic has steadily increased since mid-2023. There have been ebbs and flows but overall, as you can see below, since Q1 2015 to today, the trend has clearly been upward. 64% of all web traffic is a new record, by the way, with the previous one of 62.71% being achieved last quarter. In fact, there have been eight consecutive quarters of growth for mobile web traffic as a share of the total. Regionally, Asia leads the way with 71.3% of the total web traffic there being mobile, while in the Americas and Europe the number is around 50% - so the global dominance of mobile web traffic can basically be attributed to Asia's preference for it. If we look at the distribution of that mobile traffic through the OS lens, Android obviously dominates, as you'd expect given its market share in smartphone sales, with 72.72% of it, while iOS has 26.92%. Foldables see lackluster Q1 growth in Europe, Samsung's lead shrinks

The foldable smartphone market in Europe grew by 4% in Q1 2025, amid increasing competition. According to the report shared by Counterpoint Research, foldables now account for 1.5% of total smartphone sales in the region. The figure shows that despite several years on the market, foldables are still very much a niche segment with market growth even tapering off. Samsung remained the undisputed leader in the segment with its 41% market share in Europe. Still, the Korean brand lost significant market share compared to last year (15% pt) as key competitors ramped up their portfolios. One prime example is Motorola, which overtook Honor as the second leading player in Europe and now commands a 15% market share. The Razr 50 was Motorola's strongest contributor. Honor came in third place with 13% market share. Google was one of the big movers, managing to secure an 8% market share thanks to solid demand for its Pixel 9 Pro Fold. Tecno saw the largest growth in the European foldable phone market as its Phantom V Fold 2 saw robust demand, driven in principle by its more affordable pricing among the book-type folds. Xiaomi (8%) and Oppo (4%) rounded out the rankings. Counterpoint expects increased competition between all brands in the foldable market in the next monthes, coinciding with lowered retail pricing and improved growth. Source
