Taxi drivers' group to hold Kekal Anwar rally, PM invited
KUALA LUMPUR : A group representing taxi drivers has announced plans to hold a rally to express support for Prime Minister Anwar Ibrahim and the unity government at Dataran Merdeka on Sept 27.
Dubbed Kekal Anwar, the rally is aimed at highlighting public support for Anwar's leadership and his unity administration's efforts to carry out reforms.
Gabungan Teksi SeMalaysia president Kamarudin Hussain said they believe Anwar has the vision and capability to steer the country towards a more just and prosperous future.
He also said continued political stability was crucial to sustaining economic development and improving public welfare.
'We may only represent a small segment of society, but we believe our voice and our presence will have an impact not only within the country but also in the eyes of the international community,' Kamarudin, a PKR member, said at a press conference here today.

The former Selayang PKR chief issued a formal invitation to Anwar, who is also PKR president, to attend the rally in person.
He also invited students, civil society groups and political parties under both Pakatan Harapan and Barisan Nasional to the rally, urging them to stand together in stating their support for the current government.
This follows the PAS Youth-organised Turun Anwar rally which took place at the same location on Saturday, attended by nearly 20,000 people.
Multiple opposition leaders had attended the rally, including Perikatan Nasional, Urimai, Muda and former prime minister Dr Mahathir Mohamad, with demonstrators voicing dissatisfaction with the government and calling on Anwar to resign.

PM rejects cruelty claims, cites increased aid to opposition states
KUALA LUMPUR: Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim has dismissed claims of cruelty and discrimination, saying his government has increased allocations to opposition-led states. For about four minutes, Anwar explained why calling the government "cruel" was unfair. "Even though we are accused by some that we discriminate, that we are cruel... when we look at the numbers, the allocations for Kelantan, Terengganu, Perlis, and Kedah have increased. It's higher than when they were the government," he said. Anwar added, "Do not say that we are cruel and do not provide (allocations), because the allocations have increased." He was speaking while answering questions during Prime Minister's Question Time yesterday. Anwar also said he had given RM1 billion to the Muda Agricultural Development Authority (Mada) for the first phase and had expedited the process to provide such allocations. Anwar said the state government had withdrawn allocations for Sekolah Agama Rakyat in 2003, while the current federal government reinstated them in 2022. In a jest, he said: "The cruel ones are those who cancelled the allocations — yet they're the ones being praised."

SHAH ALAM, Aug 6 — Youth and Sports Minister Hannah Yeoh urged Chief Ministers and Menteris Besar to provide sufficient funds for youth and sports development for the coming year. Hannah said this step is crucial to help the executive council members responsible for these portfolios to implement more development programmes in their respective jurisdictions. 'I want to urge all Chief Ministers and Menteris Besar in the coming weeks, as they prepare to table next year's state budgets, to allocate sufficient funds to assist their state youth and sports excos. 'This is not a small portfolio; it looks after the future assets (of the country) and promotes a healthy lifestyle. If they receive adequate budgets, they can implement many more development programmes, but usually, it's not enough,' she said. She was speaking at a press conference after chairing the Malaysia Games (Sukma) Supreme Committee Meeting here yesterday. Hannah also chaired the first Meeting of Ministers and Excos on Youth and Sports Development 2025 yesterday, which was also attended by state youth and sports excos. The Corporate Communications Unit of the Ministry of Youth and Sports, in a media statement distributed after the meeting, stated that as of Monday (August 4), the Registrar of Youth Societies records showed that 54 per cent or 53,513 office holders in youth organisations are individuals under the age of 30. This follows the enforcement of the youth age limit in line with the Youth Societies and Youth Development Act (Amendment) 2019 [Act A1602]. 'The enforcement of the Act is expected to have a direct impact on the 8,233 youth organisations registered under the Registrar of Youth Societies office,' the statement read. — Bernama

Who was Tipu Sultan? Anwar urges Malaysians to look beyond colonial narratives in Asian history
KUALA LUMPUR, Aug 6 — Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim has called for a deeper appreciation of Asian history that moves beyond colonial narratives, citing Tipu Sultan of Mysore, an Indian ruler who fought against the British East India Company as a model of courage, learning, and tolerance. He said that the contributions of Tipu Sultan and his father Haider Ali, as defenders against British colonial expansion, exemplified the importance of understanding history from the perspective of local and regional leaders rather than solely from Western accounts. 'History is not necessarily very kind, one of our scholars Syed Hussein Alatas emphasised the need to reconstruct history because history cannot be written only by the winners or from the perspective of the colonial rulers,' he said during the launch of the More Than A Day As A Tiger exhibition at the Islamic Arts Museum Malaysia, here tonight. Also present were the Prime Minister's wife Datuk Seri Dr Wan Azizah Wan Ismail; Albukhary Foundation Chairman Tan Sri Syed Mokhtar Al-Bukhary; Malaysian National News Agency (Bernama) Chairman Datuk Seri Wong Chun Wai and his spouse, as well as representatives from embassies and consulates. The Prime Minister noted that Malaysian history, like that of many others, is often written from the perspective of the British, essentially reflecting Western colonial rule. 'Of course, there have been lots of academic accounts, including by Edward Said on Orientalism, but the manner, the whole discipline of history, culture and society is being dictated by certain Western viewpoints,' he said. Anwar also shared his personal experience visiting Mysore before taking office, recalling his admiration for Tipu Sultan's modest palace and his protection of Hindu temples, including the ancient temple in Mysore. He also praised Tipu Sultan's foresight in mastering military technology to confront colonial powers, citing the Mysore Sultanate's renowned cannons and firearms that had shocked the British in the early wars. 'It is not just an ordinary exhibition, but to showcase the history of India and the Muslim world, and the history of the anti-colonial struggle against colonial rule, in this particular case, the British rule. 'His diplomatic skills with the few sultanates, Muslims and Hindus in India and his venture into international diplomacy, particularly in persuading the French forces to support his struggle against the British,' he said. Anwar noted that while Malaysians have historically had limited knowledge of Tipu Sultan and Haider Ali's legacy, the Islamic Arts Museum Malaysia's exhibition would significantly enhance understanding about the two historical figures. Featuring an extensive collection of artefacts, manuscripts, weaponry and artworks related to Haider Ali and Tipu Sultan, the exhibition will run from tomorrow until January 11, 2026, at Special Gallery 2. — Bernama
