Panthers GM Dan Morgan provides injury updates before start of training camp

USA Today22-07-2025
The Carolina Panthers seem to be encouraged by the statuses of tight end Tommy Tremble and punter Sam Martin.
On Monday, the Panthers made a few roster moves—two of which saw the team place Tremble on the active/physically unable to perform list and Martin on the active/non-football injury list.
President of football operations and general manager Dan Morgan, during his first press conference of the summer on Tuesday, was asked about the outlook for both players
"Yeah, Sam had a minor hamstring. He's trending in a really good direction," Morgan told reporters. "I don't wanna put a timeline on it, but he's looking in good shape."
After moving on from Johnny Hekker this offseason, Carolina signed Martin to a one-year, $3 million deal out of free agency. The 35-year-old will be entering his 13th NFL campaign in 2025, with his previous three coming as a member of the Buffalo Bills.
Morgan added that the team will not look to sign a replacement in Martin's absence. Instead, they'll use a JUGS machine to simulate punts in the early goings of training camp.
He then addressed their position on Tremble, who underwent back surgery in May.
"In terms of Tommy, he's making really good progress," Morgan stated. "He's actually ahead of schedule. We feel really good with where he's at and we're excited about his progression."
The Panthers, per Morgan, still remain unsure about Tremble's availability for Week 1 of the regular season.
Outside of Tremble, the roster features five tight ends—including 2024 fourth-round pick Ja'Tavion Sanders and 2025 fifth-round pick Mitchell Evans.

Panthers LS JJ Jansen seems pretty stoked about his Madden NFL 26 rating

Carolina Panthers long snapper JJ Jansen is finally right where he should be in the video game world. On Thursday, EA Sports revealed the top ten Madden NFL 26 ratings for the league's long snappers. And Jansen, who is now in his 17th season with the Panthers, found himself all the way up at No. 5 . . . As Jansen alludes to, the game has previously listed him as a tight end—and a pretty bad one, at that. He was given a dreadful overall rating of 36 in both Madden NFL 24 and Madden NFL 25. But this year, EA Sports has decided to properly identify Jansen and his fellow long snappers in creating a more realistic simulation. Oh, and Jansen wasn't the only Panther to receive a top-ten rating at his position. He's joined by Derrick Brown, whose 95 mark is good enough for the third overall spot amongst all defensive linemen. Follow @ThePanthersWire on Twitter/X for more Panthers content.

Pitt and Penn State take rivalry to the hardwood in December

A new chapter will be written in the Pitt vs. Penn State rivalry this winter when both schools' men's basketball teams face off in Hershey. The announcement was made on Wednesday that the Panthers and Nittany Lions will play a game on Saturday, December 21, at the Giant Center in Hershey, Pa. "Pitt and Penn State is a natural rivalry that makes a great deal of sense to play in the current collegiate landscape," said Pitt head coach Jeff Capel. "The trip to Hershey in December will give Pitt fans across the state an opportunity to see the team in action and will be a great way to tip off the holiday season." This will be the first meeting between the Pitt and Penn State men's teams since 2017, when they played at the Legends Classic in Brooklyn. The Nittany Lions scored an 85-54 victory over the Panthers. Both schools have faced off 148 times since 1906, with Penn State holding a slim 76-72 record over Pitt. While the Panthers trail all-time, in the past 25 seasons, Pitt holds a 7-2 record over Penn State. While it is among the most-played rivalries, the two schools have only played nine times since 2000-01. Tickets will go on sale later this year, and a tip-off time and TV information have yet to be announced.

Panthers HC Dave Canales gives interesting update on the progress of WR Tetairoa McMillan

Carolina Panthers wideout Tetairoa McMillan is already experiencing the ups and downs of the NFL. The rookie receiver was one of a few standouts from a particularly competitive outing of training camp on Wednesday. Head coach Dave Canales was asked about McMillan and his progress to this point. "Just showing a lot of confidence and belief," Canales replied. "He's had some pretty bad plays throughout camp and he's had some excellent plays. When you have a guy, he's teaching me stuff about him that I don't know, just looking at his character. When guys bounce back quickly, it speaks to their confidence. They know they're good, 'I'll do it again, I'll be good again.' And that's really powerful self-talk." McMillan has bounced back with that confidence a few times over the past week. The first notable instance came on Monday, when he beat starting cornerback Mike Jackson for a spectacular catch after the veteran got the better of him on Saturday. He did it again on Wednesday, coming up with a handful of highlight-reel grabs following a drop in the 11-on-11 session. Canales was later asked if there's one common denominator in McMillan's bad plays. "I think it's just been physical play," Canales said. "Whether it's Jaycee [Horn] or whether it's Mike Jack or Corey Thornton, who's having a great camp, Shemar's [Bartholomew] been making plays, Akayleb Evans—there's a really good competition in the corner room. And these guys are all big, they're all over six feet, they're all over 200 pounds. That's a good recipe against big receivers. "So he's got his hands full every day and it's bringing out the best in him and he improves. Today, I thought, was his best day of camp. He's learning how to play that game, just continue to use his body." The 6-foot-4, 219-pounder was selected with the eighth overall pick of the 2025 draft. He used that body well at the University of Arizona, where he reeled in 213 receptions for 3,423 yards and 26 touchdowns over three article originally appeared on Panthers Wire: Panthers training camp: WR Tetairoa McMillan has his 'best day'
