Japan showcases MSDF frigate in Australia amid bid to win contract

The Mainichi07-06-2025
DARWIN, Australia (Kyodo) -- Japan's latest Maritime Self-Defense Force frigate made a port call in Darwin, northern Australia, on Thursday for training, as Japan competes with Germany for a contract to build Australia's new-generation fleet.
Showcasing the Mogami-class multi-mission frigate Yahagi to the media on Friday, MSDF officials highlighted its advanced stealth features and ability to operate with a smaller crew than the German vessels.
The MSDF hosted an evening reception for Royal Australian Navy officials on board the ship the same day.
In November last year, the Australian government shortlisted the Mogami-class frigate and Germany's MEKO A200 frigate as candidates to replace its navy's Anzac-class frigates in a program worth up to AU$10 billion ($6.5 billion) over the next decade.
From an operational standpoint, there is a degree of support in Australia for Germany's proposed frigates, which offer compatibility with its current fleet. Meanwhile, Japan is aiming to ease concerns by allowing officials to experience the user-friendliness of its frigate.
"With a smaller crew, it is easier to keep track of personnel. I believe this is the optimal size," Yahagi's captain, Masayoshi Tamura, said.
Frigates produced by Mitsubishi Heavy Industries Ltd. can be operated by a crew of around 90, half as many as similar vessels.
The Australian government is planning the largest expansion of its navy's combatant fleet since World War II amid China's growing military presence in the Indo-Pacific region. It is expected to choose either Japan or Germany as its partner for the joint development of new frigates by the end of the year.

Japan, Turkey agree to begin discussions on defense exchanges

ANKARA (Kyodo) -- Japanese Defense Minister Gen Nakatani and his Turkish counterpart Yasar Guler agreed Tuesday to begin discussions on exchanges between the two nations' defense industries, Japan's government said. At their meeting in the Turkish capital Ankara, Nakatani and Guler discussed the possibility of collaboration in defense equipment and technology as a "potential cooperative field," the Defense Ministry said. They also confirmed their nations will widen defense cooperation while working together toward peace and stability in their respective regions, according to the ministry. The talks came as Japan has been considering buying drones made in Turkey as part of its efforts to strengthen its surveillance and reconnaissance capabilities. Turkey has provided offensive drones to Ukraine during its war with Russia. Nakatani, who already stopped in Djibouti during his three-nation trip from Sunday, became the first Japanese defense minister to visit Turkey. He is set to travel to Jordan on Thursday.

White House launches TikTok account amid easing tensions with China

WASHINGTON (Kyodo) -- The White House on Tuesday launched an official TikTok account despite U.S. lawmakers deciding the popular short-form video-sharing app owned by a Chinese company is a national security concern. The launch, seemingly aimed at helping President Donald Trump reach wider and younger audiences, comes amid easing tensions with China and less than a month before a deadline requiring TikTok's Chinese owner ByteDance Ltd. to sell the app or face a federal ban. In April 2024, Trump's predecessor Joe Biden signed a federal law requiring ByteDance to sell the U.S. version of TikTok or face a nationwide ban on national security grounds following its passage with bipartisan congressional support. The ban was supposed to have taken effect in January, but Trump has repeatedly pushed back the deadline since taking office the same month, offering more time for the Chinese company to find a Washinton-approved buyer. In June, Trump signed an executive order for the most recent extension, which ends on Sept. 17.

Defense Ministry to Request Record ¥8.8 Tril. Budget for Fiscal 2026 Amid Concerns over China's Expanding Influence

The Defense Ministry plans to request a record-breaking budget of about ¥8.8 trillion for fiscal 2026, amid growing concerns over China's expanding influence. This increase is intended to bolster Japan's defense capabilities in the face of mounting regional security challenges, according to government sources. The focus will be on countering China's growing military presence by deploying uncrewed aircraft and defending the Nansei Islands. The initial budget for fiscal 2025 was ¥8.7 trillion, which included costs for the realignment of U.S. forces. Under the Defense Buildup Program, approved by the Cabinet in December 2022, the government set the total defense budget at about ¥43 trillion for the five years from fiscal 2023 to 2027, which excludes the costs associated with the realignment of U.S. forces. Fiscal year 2026 marks the fourth year of this program. The ministry will include in its budget request expenses related to the coastal defense initiative 'SHIELD,' under which unmanned vehicles will be used in the air, at sea and underwater. The initiative is planned to be established in fiscal 2027. The expenses are for the purchase of the unmanned vehicles and a system to simultaneously control the operation of a number of such vehicles. To defend the Nansei Islands, the ministry has allocated funds in its budget request to upgrade the Ground Self-Defense Force's 15th Brigade, located in Naha, to the 15th Division in fiscal year 2026. This upgrade is expected to include the deployment of an additional infantry regiment. It also specified plans to launch the first Space Domain Awareness (SDA) satellite in fiscal 2026 to enhance space surveillance capabilities.
