Drew Harris calls for road safety 'reset' after officer's death

Yahoo12-05-2025

Garda Commissioner (head of the Irish police force) Drew Harris has called for "a real reset" when it comes to road safety.
It follows the death of Garda Kevin Flatley, 49, on Sunday whilst carrying out a speed checkpoint in County Dublin.
Garda Flatley died at the scene after he was hit by a motorcyclist in Lanestown, in the north of the county, shortly before 13:00 local time on Sunday.
A motorcyclist, a man in his 30s, was seriously injured in the incident and has been taken to Beaumont Hospital in Dublin where his condition is described as critical.
Speaking at a press conference on Sunday, Mr Harris said it was a "desperately sad day for An Garda Síochána".
Mr Harris confirmed that investigations are ongoing into his death.
He highlighted "the dangers there are for those who engage in road policing".
Irish broadcaster RTÉ reported that another garda member was also hit by a motorcycle in Coolock and broke his leg on Sunday.
RTÉ reported one man was arrested.
A third Garda was also injured on duty last week when he was hit by a car.
The Commissioner said that "this is a regular occurrence".
"The dangers our members are facing is just extraordinary.
"I acknowledge the tougher sentences that have been put in place by the government, but also this does call for a real reset and rethink about our approach as a society in terms of road safety.
"We know what causes dangers on the road," he said.
"Every one of us has a responsibility when we go out on the road. Our roads are busy, they are not a place for dangerous driving."
Gardaí also renewed their appeal for information and dash cam footage.
The Commissioner said a number of people had come forward but they were still seeking information on the movements of the R1 Yamaha Motorcycle from around midday on Sunday, in the hour before Garda Flatley was killed.
The GAA club in Balbriggan of which Garda Flatley and his family were members have paid tribute to him.
In a statement the club said: "Kevin was an absolute gentleman who had a huge part to play in our club, always lending a hand when he could. He was always a pleasure to chat to, and his grá (love) for GAA and helping others shone through in every conversation.
"He was a dedicated coach with our u10 girls team, encouraging the players at all times and bringing great energy," the statement said.
They extended their "deepest of condolences" to Garda Flatley's family.

Camping tragedy on long weekend as teen girl killed in overturned 4WD: 'Scary to see'

Travellers and campers are being urged to be careful and sensible on the road and off it, after the tragic death of a teen girl over the long weekend when a 4WD allegedly rolled multiple times. A group of teenagers were travelling in the vehicle when it left the road and rolled several times on Saturday night, West Australian police said. The group had earlier been camping at Logue Brook Dam, also known as Lake Brockman, in the southwest of the state, before the accident in Hoffman. A 15-year-old female passenger died from her injuries at the scene. A 16-year-old male driver and a 17-year-old male passenger were rushed to Bunbury Regional Hospital for treatment of serious injuries. Meanwhile an 18-year-old male passenger and two 16-year-old female passengers who were also in the vehicle at the time were being treated for minor injuries. Among them was Jett and his mate Rocquo. "When I walked up there, there was a massive four-wheel-drive that had been smashed like a tin can, it was scary to see," Jett said, according to the national broadcaster. "There was so many people running towards the car and trying to help but there's only so much you can do in that situation." Rocquo reportedly helped rip a door off to free a male passenger. "We were trying to get everyone out but you can't do anything and it's just sad," he said. After witnessing the confronting scene, they hope it will serve as a reminder for Aussies to take care on the roads. In Western Australia, drivers can't obtain their provisional licence until the age of 17. Major Crash investigators are conducting an examination of the scene and are appealing for anybody with dash-cam footage of the incident to come forward. Logue Brook Dam has long been a popular spot for campers and travellers in WA, often drawing big crowds over long weekends and holiday periods. Earlier this year, reports of bad behaviour of the Australia Day long weekend prompted authorities to review its "visitor management strategies" — potentially leading to changes in free camping access as officials consider public safety and protecting the natural environment. "The Parks and Wildlife Service will continue to deploy rangers and work closely with WA Police to ensure compliance with regulations," a DBCA spokesperson told Yahoo News Australia at the time. Three drivers clocked at over 100mph in an hour

A road policing chief said he was left "horrified" after three drivers were caught driving at over 100 mph on a stretch within the space of an hour. Adam Pipe, from Essex Police, said one of his officers, who was carrying out speed checks on the A12 between Chelmsford and Witham, detected a total of 180 offences in just 60 minutes. One motorist was clocked driving at 140mph, another at 121mph - and a third at 110mph. They will all receive court summons, the force added. "It's totally unacceptable and is putting road users, as well as themselves, at risk of serious injury or death," Mr Pipe said. "I'm horrified to see drivers reaching twice the legal speed limit on our roads," he added. "We've seen a number of serious collisions on our roads this year, with people losing their lives." He said the force was committed to reducing speeds and officers were patrolling the roads network 24 hours a day, to catch irresponsible drivers and keep people safe. The patrol was carried out on Friday afternoon. Mr Pipe said: "I urge people to think about the consequences of driving too fast and the irreparable damage that can be caused. "Don't resort to speeding, it's never worth the devastating cost," he warned. The fixed penalty for speeding is a £100 fine and three points on a driving licence. Drivers who exceed the limit by a significant margin can expect six points on a licence, as well as a court appearance and a driving ban, the RAC said. Police biker safety campaign to 'educate the public'

Motorbike riders have to ride "defensively" because drivers do not look out for them, some have told the BBC. To highlight these issues with road safety Avon and Somerset Police has joined a national campaign to reduce fatalities on two-wheeled vehicles. According to the force, there have been 28 fatal collisions involving powered two-wheel vehicles since January 2023. William Tucker, 22, from Somerset said everyone around him always warn him to "go safe - don't push it too hard". More news stories for Bristol Watch the latest Points West Listen to the latest news for Bristol "You get some car users who don't see the bikes," he said. "It is part of the risk of having a bike - you have to ride quite defensively otherwise you will come to grief." Mykel Brereton, 23, from Watchet who has had a few "near misses" said it is "all great until you need to pull out somewhere". "People don't look out you and think you're small so think they can beat your bike. It's not good at all," he said. Alaistair Lockwood, 24, from Taunton said a "big part of biking" is the "kind" community that looks out for each other. "Just don't be another statistic - as long as you're aware that other road users are a hazard to you," he said. As part of the national road safety campaign Avon and Somerset Police said it would take on extra measures including, patrols of high-risk routes and use of drones. Matt Boiles from Avon Somerset Police explained that the campaign is not just "focusing on bikes and prosecuting bikers". "It's about educating the public as a whole to the risks that bikers are exposed to and the risks they expose themselves by their riding," he said. The campaign takes place from 2-15 June.
