
World's largest EV maker brands Labour's Electric Car Grant 'stupid'
Labour last week announced a £4.5billion package to support the transition to zero emission transport with a new £650million-backed Electric Car Grant taking centre stage and attracting much attention - though not all for the right reasons.
There's already widespread criticism of the scheme with experts calling it 'a waste of public spending' and industry warning it could further compound 'rampant EV depreciation'. But BYD's rejection of the initiative is perhaps the most scathing reaction so far.
It has been fuelled by reports that Chinese car makers have seemingly been left short by the UK Government; it is reported that the region's ongoing reliance on coal-powered energy for its vehicle assembly and battery manufacturing will fail to adhere to the scheme's sustainability criteria.
Manufacturers will discover if they've met the required thresholds to qualify early next month.
BYD's CEO Wang Chuanfu called the subsidies a 'bit of a joke', hitting out at their effectiveness. He told the Financial Times: 'They are too small and too late. By the time they start to take effect, the market will already be saturated with Chinese EVs.'
BYD's vice-president Stella Li, also predicts that the Chinese brand's sales wouldn't be affected by the policy, telling the FT that the world's biggest EV producer is undeterred and will create 5,000 more jobs by next year as part of its rapid European expansion.
On 15 July, Transport Secretary Heid Alexander announced that drivers across the UK will soon enjoy discounts on a range of new electric cars of up to £3,750.
Part of the Plan for Change, the grant is aimed at making electric car ownership a reality for thousands of people by 'putting money back in working people's pockets'.
Supporting Labour's phase out of the sale of new petrol and diesel cars by 2030, the Electric Car Grant (ECG) is the first buyers will get incentives for new EV purchases since the previous Conservative regime withdrew its Plug-In Car Grant in 2022.
Although cars price at or under £37,000 are eligible, many won't make the cut for the highest available subsidy of £3,750, let alone the lower £1,500 grant allowance, if they fail to meet stringent manufacturing emissions barometers.
Manufacturers have been invited to apply for the grant scheme, though it is unclear which models will be eligible.
Reports have said the Department for Transport will provide a list of qualifying EVs on 11 August. This is Money is seeking confirmation from the department to verify this date.
However, Chinese car makers almost certainly face the biggest difficulties qualifying, with recent reports suggesting their EVs will be banned altogether.
While many Chinese manufacturers - including MG, LeapMotor and Great Wall Motors (GWM) - have already announced their own EV grants of similar discounted value to compensate, BYD says it isn't going to follow suit.
Instead it's going against the grain and dismissing both the introducing of the grants and their use.
'It does not make any sense. This subsidy actually sounds like they will give some companies a benefit, but it's more like a drug. If you get rid of this, you will suffer,' Li told the FT.
Alfredo Altavilla, a special advisor for BYD's European operations, also said that there's not way to prevent the success of Chinese-made cars in the long run: 'The question is, is there any European government who can afford to fight against Chinese-made cars forever? No. So what's the purpose of doing all this?'
To prove a point, BYD is going full steam ahead with its expansion plans, aiming to produce cars in Hungary and Turkey and open 2,000 retail stores in Europe, 280 of which will be in the UK.
Each dealership will employ around 20 people.
BYD has also signed a new sponsorship deal with Italian football club Inter Milan to appear on the back of team shirts. The arrangement will see both the men's first team and its top management and coaches provided with 70 BYD vehicles.
The Shenzhen-based company is building on its highly successful Euro 2024 sponsorship which helped push brand awareness in the UK from just one per cent in 2023 to 31 per cent in 2024.
Li said: 'My dream is in five years, you're walking in a supermarket and everyone will know, 'oh, BYD, we know them, they're a high-tech company'.
In the fourth quarter of 2024 BYD overtook Tesla as the largest EV manufacturer in the world, and as of April 2025 it also sold more pure EVs in Europe than Tesla for the first time.
As such it's been called an 'overnight success' and as of March 2025 has sold a whopping 11.6 million EVs.

Trump's new NASA boss wants to build a nuclear reactor on the MOON
New NASA Administrator Sean Duffy's first project will be an attempt to take American energy dominance to the moon. Duffy, who is also Secretary of Transportation and took the job as NASA Administrator after the White House shut out Elon Musk's preferred candidate, will announce plans to build a nuclear reactor on the moon this week. The Daily Mail has reached out to NASA and the White House for comment. In 2022, NASA announced plans to put a nuclear reactor on the moon by 2030 as part of a vision to turn the lunar body into an orbiting power station but Duffy wants an expedited, more definite timeline. The goal is for United States to outpace China in 'winning the second space race,' a source told Politico. Earlier this year, it was revealed China may team up with Russia in an attempt to build their own lunar nuclear reactor. Sure enough, Duffy's directive claims that China or Russia or any American enemy could 'declare a keep-out zone which would significantly inhibit the United States' if they got to the moon first. Duffy's directive commands NASA to get someone to lead the effort in the next 60 days and solicit companies that can help launch ahead of China. A former Fox News and reality TV star, Duffy is also pushing an effort to replace the International Space Station. Duffy, a former Congressman from Wisconsin, oversees the $25 billion space agency. In 2022, the US space agency chose three design concept proposals for a fission power system that could be ready to launch by the end of the decade. It is unclear if Duffy is going from the same plans. The plan is for the 40-kilowatt class fission power system to last at least 10 years in the lunar environment, with the hope that it could one day support a permanent human presence on the moon, as well as support manned missions to Mars and beyond. If NASA is to build a base on the lunar surface, one of the major problems to solve will be how such a proposed settlement would be powered. Solar panels are great for powering rovers, but a human base would need a continuous and reliable source of power. NASA experts are looking into nuclear fission as the answer because the technology has been used extensively on Earth. Relatively small and lightweight compared to other power systems, fission systems are reliable and could enable continuous power regardless of location, available sunlight, and other natural environmental conditions, the US space agency said. If the demonstration of such a system on the moon was successful, it would pave the way for the fueling of longer duration journeys through space. It is hoped that the development of these fission surface power technologies will also help NASA advance nuclear propulsion systems that rely on reactors to generate power. These could then be used for deep space exploration missions. The goal will also be to beat China and Russia to the same mission. The East Asian country aims to become a major space power and land astronauts on the moon by 2030, and its planned Chang'e-8 mission for 2028 would lay the groundwork for constructing a permanent, manned lunar base. In a presentation in Shanghai, the 2028 mission's Chief Engineer Pei Zhaoyu showed that the lunar base's energy supply could also depend on large-scale solar arrays, and pipelines and cables for heating and electricity built on the moon's surface. Russia's space agency Roscosmos said last year it planned to build a nuclear reactor on the moon's surface with the China National Space Administration (CNSA) by 2035 to power the International Lunar Research Station (ILRS). The inclusion of the nuclear power unit in a Chinese space official's presentation at a conference for officials from the 17 countries and international organisations that make up the ILRS suggests Beijing supports the idea, although it has never formally announced it. 'An important question for the ILRS is power supply, and in this Russia has a natural advantage, when it comes to nuclear power plants, especially sending them into space, it leads the world, it is ahead of the United States,' Wu Weiren, chief designer of China's lunar exploration program, told Reuters on the sidelines of the conference. After little progress on talks over a space-based reactor in the past, 'I hope this time both countries can send a nuclear reactor to the moon,' Wu said.

Crystal Palace DELETE all information about Conference League from their website just hours after draw - ahead of CAS battle with Nottingham Forest to be reinstated into Europa League
Crystal Palace have distanced themselves from the UEFA Conference League – just hours after being drawn in the competition's play-off round. On Monday afternoon, Palace's official website briefly published an article detailing their potential opponents in Europe. Monday's draw paired the Eagles with either Norwegian side Fredrikstad or Danish club Midtjylland, with the first leg scheduled for August 21 at Selhurst Park and the return fixture a week later on August 28. But by Monday evening, that article had been deleted. The original link now returns a 404 error, reading: 'The page you're looking for has either been moved, deleted or simply doesn't exist.' In addition, no European dates are listed on the club's online fixture schedule. The removal of the content underlines Palace's resistance to playing in the Conference League, with the club still fighting to overturn their controversial demotion from the Europa League. Palace have taken UEFA to the Court of Arbitration for Sport after being bumped down a tier due to multi-club ownership rules. The club were removed from the Europa League because American businessman John Textor — through his Eagle Football Holdings group — held a 43.9 per cent stake in Palace while also owning 77 per cent of French side Lyon. But Palace have since deleted any mention of the Conference League draw from their website Both clubs had qualified for the Europa League, and UEFA rules prohibit two teams under the same ownership or influence from competing in the same European competition. With that in mind, UEFA chose to keep Lyon in the tournament and demoted Palace to the Conference League. Lyon were deemed the 'priority club' due to Textor's majority control, and because UEFA's MCO rules state that the club with the higher domestic league finish retains its place. Lyon had finished sixth in Ligue 1, while Palace were 12th in the Premier League — even though Palace qualified via the FA Cup. Palace argue that UEFA's application of the MCO regulations contradicts its own competition rules, and have taken their case to CAS, where a hearing will take place on Friday, with a verdict expected next Monday. Palace say Textor had no controlling interest in the club, with only 25 per cent voting rights, and that the issue has since been resolved — with New York Jets owner Woody Johnson signing a legally binding agreement to buy the shares, pending Premier League approval. Speaking to Reuters last month Textor said: 'Honestly, I am stunned. We did everything possible to separate from the club, as UEFA would ask, with a sale process that began before the deadline, and a sale that will occur well before the draw. Now we have sold out of a club that I love, to help Palace fans continue this dream year, only to have another off-the-pitch decision lay waste to an historic sporting victory.' Club chairman Steve Parish also hit out at the ruling, calling it 'a terrible injustice.' He told Sky Sports: 'Everyone knows we're not part of a multi-club set-up. We're caught up in a rule that wasn't put there for us. This is a ludicrous decision. We will ask the appeal court to listen to our argument.' Palace also believe they were treated more harshly than Nottingham Forest, who were granted extra time to adjust their ownership structure to avoid a potential conflict with Olympiacos, also owned by Evangelos Marinakis. In the end, Olympiacos qualified for the Champions League, meaning no clash with Forest ever materialised. Forest, who initially qualified for the Conference League, have been promoted to the Europa League, subject to Palace's appeal outcome. Mail Sport understands Forest will send legal representatives to the CAS hearing to defend their place in the competition. The case is part of a broader crackdown by UEFA on multi-club ownership. Previously, clubs like Manchester City and Girona, and Manchester United and Nice, were allowed to compete in Europe by placing one club in a blind trust, preventing any operational crossover. But UEFA has signalled this will no longer be a viable long-term solution. UEFA quietly moved the compliance deadline forward from June 1 to March 1 for the 2024–25 season — and Palace argue that they were caught out by this change, having only reached the fifth round of the FA Cup by the March deadline and still being uncertain of European qualification.

Uh-oh, he's back in the news — it's Prince Andrew, the duke of hazard
For a man who hardly goes anywhere or sees anyone, the Duke of York has a very unfortunate habit of finding himself in the spotlight. He is the subject of a new book full of extraordinary allegations, which, as so often with the older of the King's brothers, can be divided into two broad categories: claims that are concerning and serious, and those that are slightly less concerning but further burnish his hard-earned and unimpeachable reputation for oafishness. • Jeffrey Epstein sold Prince Andrew's secrets, new book claims In his book the historian Andrew Lownie writes that Prince Andrew's friendship with Jeffrey Epstein, which was the source of so many of his problems, may have been even more perilous than previously expected. The 'rattlesnake' Epstein sold Andrew's 'most intimate secrets' to foreign intelligence agencies, it is claimed. And Epstein is alleged by sources to have been an 'agent of influence' for President Putin. Lownie wrote: 'The Prince was a useful idiot who gave him respectability, access to political leaders and business opportunities. He found him easy to exploit.' Epstein died in his prison cell in New York in 2019 while awaiting trial for child sex trafficking offences, but the prospect that he had links to intelligence agencies who may not have the best interests of Andrew or the royal family at heart is not entirely reassuring. Rather less surprising are claims in the book, Entitled: The Rise and Fall of the House of York, that Andrew can be rude to staff. One painful vignette features a head of the household at Hillsborough Castle in Northern Ireland reporting damage to a tree planted by Andrew's grandmother. He referred to her as the Queen Mother, rather than her full title, Queen Elizabeth the Queen Mother. This ignited the fury of Andrew, who allegedly called him a 'f***ing imbecile' and ordered him out. • Prince Andrew, the King and the 'siege of Royal Lodge' Andrew turned 65 in February. If his parents' genes are anything to go by, he could be living the strange life of a semi-detached royal for decades to come. Last year The Times reported that, shorn of an official role, he spends long days at Royal Lodge watching television in a darkened room and venturing out on horseback into the Windsor estate's 40 hectares three times a week. Meanwhile, anxious courtiers wait for the duke's past to trigger its next unwelcome detonation. The day Andrew cannot escape is one back in 2001 when a camera captured him at the Belgravia home of Ghislaine Maxwell with his arm round the waist of young Virginia Giuffre. The photograph has been disputed and he claimed that he could not recall meeting her. But Giuffre, who said she was recruited as a masseuse for Epstein by Maxwell, claimed she was forced to have sex with the duke when she was a teenager. In 2022 he reportedly settled a lawsuit brought by her for £12 million without admitting liability. He had been forced to retreat from public long before that. His boneheaded refusal to express regret for his friendship with Epstein in his notorious 2019 interview with Emily Maitlis on Newsnight, and his failure to convincingly answer questions put to him about Giuffre, caused a public outcry and ended his royal career. His alibis included that he had been at Pizza Express in Woking on the night that it was claimed he danced with her at Tramp nightclub, and that he could not have sweated on the dancefloor, as was vividly claimed, because a peculiar medical condition meant he did not perspire. Within days it was announced that he was stepping back from public duties. When he attempted a comeback in 2021, Prince Charles headed him off, with a source saying 'a way back for the duke is demonstrably not possible' and that it was an unsolvable problem because 'the spectre of this [accusation] raises its head with hideous regularity'. Not one but two streaming service dramas about the Newsnight interview kept the Epstein mess firmly in the public eye in the UK and around the world. Then in April this year Giuffre's sad story ended in tragedy as she took her own life in Australia. • Prince Andrew 'called staff member an imbecile over Queen Mother' With Epstein and the conspiracy theories around him entangling President Trump, this is a miserable mire in which Andrew is stuck. Just last week his one-time friend Maxwell, for whom he once threw a birthday party at Sandringham with Epstein in attendance, was moved to a minimum-security prison in Texas. She is serving 20 years for her role in Epstein's sex trafficking network but recently spoke to a top US Justice Department official about what she knows. One of her lawyers said they had not talked to the president about a pardon 'just yet'. Another big embarrassment for the royal family emerged last year when the prince was named as an associate of an alleged Chinese spy. A court named him as a confidant of Yang Tengbo, an alleged agent. During the case it emerged that a senior aide to Andrew had written to Yang, a Chinese businessman, telling him he was 'at the very top of a tree' of the duke's contacts. This prompted Stella Rimington, the former director of MI5, to wonder: 'Maybe he's just the weakest link.' The news led to him abandoning plans to join the King at the traditional family Christmas at Sandringham. The previous year he was invited to Sandringham with Sarah, the Duchess of York, his former wife, in a sign that they might be being gradually rehabilitated. His close family have stood by him, especially his former wife. In an intriguing arrangement they have continued to live under the same roof, despite divorcing in 1996. She has called him 'a great man' and in an interview with The Sunday Times about her experience of mental health problems with men she talked about caring for her late father. 'I was left to look after a sad man, which is sort of what I'm doing now,' she said, possibly referring to her relationship with Andrew. In an interview in The Times at the start of this year she talked about going to some 'dark places' after she had two forms of cancer diagnosed within months of each other. 'My family have been an immense support to me through this period. I've used meditation and mindfulness to help stay positive and balanced,' she said. • Sarah Ferguson: I will not let Andrew down Ferguson is said to have been regarded by the King as a helpful conduit to his brother during a period when relations between them have been strained, culminating in the 'siege of Royal Lodge'. The King had said he would cut his scandal-hit sibling off financially if he continued to stay in the 30-room home in Windsor Great Park, instead of moving to the more modest accommodation at Frogmore Cottage, the former home of the Duke and Duchess of Sussex. Andrew has a lease on Royal Lodge, which the Queen Mother turned into a comfortable family home, until 2078, but Charles was no longer prepared to pay for his security. The home is outside the main Windsor security cordon. In a surprise development last year Andrew raised the funds to stay from legitimate sources. The duke's finances have long been a matter of speculation, including when it emerged that Ferguson once had a debt paid off by Epstein. It is known that he sold his former marital home, Sunninghill Park, a wedding present from Queen Elizabeth, for £15 million, £3 million above the asking price. He also sold a ski chalet in Switzerland in 2022. Andrew and 'Fergie' now have the welcome distraction of four grandchildren: Princess Beatrice's daughters Sienna, aged three, and Athena Mapelli Mozzi, six months, and Princess Eugenie's sons August, four, and Ernest Brooksbank, two. And at Easter he made a surprise appearance at the royal family's Easter service in St George's Chapel, Windsor. Sources have made it clear that he will still be welcome at such 'family events'. But minor indignities continue to be visited upon the prince. A school named after him on the island of St Helena was reported to be looking for a more 'neutral' name (will the title 'Duke of York' be retired once he relinquishes it?). Among the old anecdotes that continue to be thrown up, one that seemed especially absurd involved an employee being moved to other duties because the prince objected to him wearing a nylon tie. What then to do with a problem like Prince Andrew? The writer AN Wilson wondered in The Times last year if Andrew could not be sent to govern the Falkland Islands, where the one heroic episode of his life is recorded: piloting helicopters during the war against General Galtieri's invading forces. He quickly, regretfully answered his own question: 'It would be a neat solution but, given his extreme stupidity and his ability to attract dodgy friends, it would not be politically feasible to entrust him with such a role.' The King may dream of his brother being somewhere trouble can't find him, but at least when he's in Windsor he can keep a close eye on him and perhaps get an early warning when this never-ending saga next explodes back into life.
