Chairperson of the Karnataka State Commission for Women Nagalakshmi Chowdhary has directed officials to hold extensive awareness programmes in all colleges on preventing child marriage, teenage pregnancy and rape.
Chairing a review meeting in Haveri on Thursday, she said that it is a matter of concern that child marriage and child pregnancy have been reported in the district and directed the officials to take necessary steps immediately to prevent recurrence.
Dr. Chowdhary told the officials to ensure that internal grievances redressal committees to prevent sexual exploitation are constituted in government offices, schools and colleges and such information is displayed on notice boards.
'Cooperation from everyone is required in providing justice to the aggrieved people. The officials should discharge their duties responsibly,' she said.
In order to make people develop trust towards the police, the department should effectively implement the Mane Manege Police programme effectively.
The police personnel should behave politely with the public who come to the police station. And, they should feel that they will get justice by approaching the police, she said.
Taking strong exception to a complaint regarding food not being given to pregnant women and women with newborn babies and the ICU ward remained locked, she asked the District Health and Family Welfare Officer to immediately take remedial measures and appoint doctors to vacant posts.
Regarding the problems of members of a nomadic tribe who are residing on the banks of the village tank in Haunsbhavi for the past 30 years, she asked the authorities to take steps immediately to provide alternative land and provide them with Aadhaar cards and other documents.
Responding to it, Deputy Commissioner Vijaymahanthesh Danammanavar said that steps will be taken to convert habitats with more than 10 houses into revenue villages and provide all basic amenities to them.
Earlier, students, women, the aged and representatives of various organisations brought to the notice of the chairperson their complaints regarding wage irregularities, harassment by money lenders, lack of amenities for workers, ration cards, pension, bus stops, additional buses and such other issues.
Dr. Chowdhary, who heard public grievances for nearly two hours, directed the officials to redress the complaints.
Chairman of Haveri Urban Development Authority S.F. Gajigoudra, Superintendent of Police Yashodha Vantagodi, Zilla Panchayat Chief Executive Officer Ruchi Bindal, Deputy Director of Women and Child Development Revati Hosamath and others were present.

Akshaya entrepreneurs in Ernakulam suspend K-Smart services over low service charges

Akshaya entrepreneurs in Ernakulam district, affiliated to the Akshaya Welfare Association, have unofficially suspended K-Smart services in protest against what they allege is an abysmally low service charge unilaterally fixed by the State government without any consultation. On Friday (August 8, 2025), the association laid siege to the district project office and submitted a representation, along with their charter of rates, to the district project manager, who assured them that it would be forwarded to the State project office. The government had issued the order fixing service charges for K-Smart services on Wednesday (August 6, 2025). 'Unless the government decides to revisit the rates, we will go ahead and start charging service charges as per our charter from Saturday (August 9,2025). We cannot continue causing inconvenience to the public by suspending the delivery of K-Smart services,' said G.K. Sreeraj, secretary, Akshaya Welfare Association. Meanwhile, Minister for Local Self-Governments M.B. Rajesh clarified that K-Smart, the digital platform developed by the Information Kerala Mission for the Local Self-Government department, was designed to be user-friendly, enabling anyone with basic computer skills to access it. However, people continue to rely on Akshaya centres. There have been complaints about service charges varying across centres, with some allegedly collecting exorbitant fees. The K-Smart service charges were fixed in this context, Mr. Rajesh said. Since the launch of Project Akshaya 23 years ago, service fees have been revised only once—in 2018. Akshaya entrepreneurs have been up in arms ever since, citing the negligible revision, which they said did not reflect rising operational costs or the stiff competition from private citizen service centres. 'The sad part is that even the revised service charges for K-Smart services were fixed unilaterally and kept abysmally low,' said Mr. Sreeraj. He cited the example of the charge for changing building ownership—a process that involves scanning and uploading the title deed, possession certificate, consent letter from the previous owner, death certificate (if applicable), two pages of the Haritha Karma Sena register, and entering building details in both English and Malayalam. 'This laborious process takes up to 30 minutes, yet the service charge is just ₹50,' he rued. A similar situation exists with the service charge for marriage registration, said Mr. Sreeraj. The process involves entering the one-time password received by the bride, bridegroom, and two witnesses, uploading the Aadhaar cards and SSLC books of the couple, feeding in their personal details in both English and Malayalam, uploading the marriage certificate, and completing a video verification of the newly-wed couple. 'The entire process takes up to 45 minutes, yet the service charge is just ₹70 for the general category and ₹50 for the scheduled category—while the government fee for marriage registration itself is ₹120,' he pointed out.

Tiruppur farmers put on hold decision to boycott Uzhavar Sandhais after authorities promise action against encroachers

Farmers selling their produce in Tiruppur North and Tiruppur South 'Uzhavar Sandhais' in the city limits on Friday decided to put on hold their boycott decision that was provoked by the presence of encroachers outside the markets, after talks with the authorities. At the meeting chaired by M.P. Amith, Commissioner of Tiruppur City Municipal Corporation, and attended by officials of the Police, Highways and Agricultural Marketing departments, the farmers were assured of action for removal of encroachments in the next three days. The grouse of the farmers was that full-time vegetable vendors hindered their business by putting up shops in encroached space along Palladam Road in front of the Tiruppur South Uzhavar Sandhai and along Perumanallur Road in front of Tiruppur North Uzhavar Sandhai. Notices were issued to the vendors occupying the encroached space on Friday, and announcements were made over public address system instructing them to vacate over the next three days. The farmers had decided to boycott the Uzhavar Sandhais as the presence of the vegetable vendors defied the very purpose of the scheme that envisaged reasonable returns for the farmers without the involvement of middlemen. Since the vegetable vendors also conducted their business at the timings of Uzhavar Sandhais, the transactions of farmers were severely impacted, according to the representations made on several occasions to the authorities. The farmers, who are worried that their livelihood is at stake, look for concerted action by the Revenue, Police, and Highways Departments and the Tiruppur City Municipal Corporation, Ramesh, State Coordinator - Uzhavar Sandhai, Tamil Nadu Farmers' Protection Association, said. The scheme introduced by the DMK government in the past was now being weakened in its own dispensation, he rued. In the absence of action by the authorities well before the visit of Chief Minister M.K. Stalin to Tiruppur on August 11, farmers will express their dismay by scattering vegetables on the roads, Mr. Ramesh warned.

UP DGP holds review meet on grievances, cybercrime, training; stresses accountability

Lucknow, Uttar Pradesh Director General of Police Rajeev Krishna on Friday chaired a state-wide review meeting through video conferencing with senior police officials, focusing on the handling of public grievances, cybercrime, and the quality of police training. UP DGP holds review meet on grievances, cybercrime, training; stresses accountability According to a statement, the DGP began by reiterating his 10 key priorities for the force, noting that their effective achievement depends on three core pillars — technology, training, and specialised talent. He reviewed progress on each priority in sequence, stressing that the agenda must be pursued with precision and accountability. On public grievance redressal, Krishna emphasised that evaluations must be based on data and measurable outcomes. Using a comparative presentation of complaint resolution figures from the Integrated Grievance Redress System , he directed senior officers to personally review cases regularly. "The performance of senior officials and district police chiefs would be judged on the timeliness and quality of grievance disposal, and in turn, they must evaluate their station house officers on the same basis," the DGP said. "Police stations must create an environment where citizens feel comfortable lodging complaints, with strict measures to keep undesirable elements out," he added. He called for a "laser focus" on resolving grievances effectively. Turning to cybercrime, Krishna noted a sharp rise in such offences since the COVID-19 pandemic and urged that the UP Police's capacity be upgraded accordingly. He instructed that cyber cells at all police stations be strengthened within the next 15 days, with only skilled and knowledgeable personnel appointed to them. Training through the CyTrain portal of the Indian Cybercrime Coordination Centre should be widely adopted, with visible results expected within the same timeframe. He also called for increased use of the National Cybercrime Reporting Portal by cyber cells at both station and district levels, with prompt action on complaints received through it. The DGP announced that a standard operating procedure for this portal would soon be issued from headquarters. Discussing training, Krishna described it as a daily priority and an attitude, not merely an activity. He directed senior officers to ensure quality training in districts and PAC units during their visits, covering both operational and situational readiness. Training, he stressed, is a command responsibility that senior officers must directly oversee. He also urged them to maintain up-to-date knowledge of law, forensics, and technology. The DGP revealed that police headquarters is categorising all UP Police personnel according to their skills, qualifications, and specialisations, and that in future, assignments will be based on these capabilities, according to the statement. Concluding the meeting, he urged officers to bring about improvements and changes in work culture, and to ensure the strict implementation of all circulars and directives issued by headquarters.
