NSUI ‘exposes' civic neglect at Mohali govt college
Mohali: In a scathing revelation highlighting the poor state of civic infrastructure in government educational institutions, glaring anomalies were found at Shaheed Major Harminderpal Singh (Shaurya Chakra) Government College, Phase VI, Mohali. The college, which caters to hundreds of students, was found to be functioning without drinking water, with broken toilets, blocked washrooms, and appalling sanitation conditions.
The inspection was conducted on Saturday by Isherpreet Singh, president of the National Students Union of India (NSUI), Punjab, who expressed deep concern over the dismal state of the campus. "This is not just a failure of infrastructure — it is a betrayal of the students' right to dignity and basic human needs," he said, condemning the government's neglect.
Pointing to the irony of Punjab's water-sharing debates, Isherpreet questioned the state's priorities: "When our own students don't even have water to drink, from where will we give water to Haryana?" he said, directly referring to Haryana CM's recent demand for water and targeting the state government's inability to meet local needs first.
He also criticised education minister Harjot Singh Bains, calling out the state's touted 'Shiksha Kranti' (Education Revolution). "If this is a revolution, it has failed to even reach the classrooms and campuses," said Isherpreet, highlighting disconnect between political rhetoric and ground reality.
NSUI Punjab chief announced a statewide campaign to audit all government colleges in the state. "This will not end here. We will visit every government college in Punjab, expose the real conditions, and make the government answerable," he said.
He urged the Punjab government to act on a war footing to restore essential facilities such as drinking water, working washrooms, and proper sanitation. "We are not asking for luxury — we are asking for basic dignity. Is that too much to ask for students?" he said.
The inspection has intensified pressure on state authorities to address long-standing civic issues in educational institutions, with student groups vowing to continue their campaign until meaningful action is taken.

Ahmedabad: As schools across Gujarat prepare to reopen after the summer vacation, several complaints surfaced from parents alleging that some private schools were forcing them to buy books, school bags and stationery from specific vendors. In response, the district education officer (DEO) issued circulars to all school principals, instructing them not to pressure parents or sell educational materials directly through the school. The issue came to light following multiple complaints, including one from Suffah School in Kalupur. The school allegedly compelled parents to buy textbooks and stationery only from designated sources. Based on this complaint, the DEO issued a notice to the school, demanding an explanation within two days as to why a penalty of Rs 10,000 should not be imposed. On Wednesday, NSUI activists submitted evidence to the DEO office, highlighting that various schools were pressuring parents to buy school bags, uniforms and stationery from specific shops. Activists also claimed that such practices were ongoing in several institutions. In response, the DEO office reiterated that all schools must follow only govt-approved textbooks and syllabi. Schools are prohibited from using or promoting unapproved educational material. Furthermore, schools are instructed not to compel parents to make purchases from particular vendors or sell such items on their premises. The DEO warned that any school found violating these norms will face action.

BJP also questions AAP's anti-drug drive
Ludhiana: BJP national general secretary Tarun Chugh joined party candidate Jiwan Gupta's campaign for the west bypoll on Sunday, criticising the ruling Aam Aadmi Party's governance in Punjab. Chugh questioned the efficacy of AAP's "Yudh Nasheyan Virudh" drive against drugs, noting that drug problems persist in the state. He expressed confidence in BJP's victory, dismissing other candidates as proxies and stating the real contest would be between BJP and AAP. Chugh emphatically criticised the education system of the state, saying that classrooms lacked basic facilities like blackboards and teachers under the "Shiksha Kranti" initiative. He predicted BJP would form the government in Punjab in 2027, with the upcoming bypoll results indicating public sentiment. Regarding development works, Chugh attributed progress of the city and state to funding by the Centre, claiming AAP's contribution was minimal. He also alleged that AAP's candidate, Rajya Sabha MP Sanjeev Arora, was contesting reluctantly under party pressure. Nomination Filing BJP candidate Jiwan Gupta will file his nomination papers on Monday, the last day for submissions. Supporters will gather at Ferozepur Road near Bharat Nagar Chowk before proceeding to the DC office. Punjab BJP leadership is expected to participate in the nomination process.
