Sweden tightens maritime controls to target Russian shadow fleet

Yahoo2 days ago

The Swedish government has introduced regulations to enhance insurance checks on foreign vessels to counter Russia's shadow fleet.

Details: Effective from 1 July 2025, the Swedish Coast Guard and Maritime Administration can request insurance details from vessels transiting Sweden's territorial waters or economic zone, beyond those entering ports.
"We are seeing more and more problematic events in the Baltic Sea and this requires us not only to hope for the best, but also to plan for the worst," said Prime Minister Ulf Kristersson.
Russia's shadow fleet transports oil, gas and reportedly stolen Ukrainian grain, evading Western sanctions.
Background: Polish Prime Minister Donald Tusk said on 21 May that a Russian shadow fleet vessel had carried out suspicious manoeuvres near a power cable connecting Poland and Sweden. Polish forces intervened in the incident.

UK government ready to take Abramovich to court over Chelsea sale proceeds for Ukraine

Three years after Russian billionaire Roman Abramovich was forced to sell Premier League club Chelsea, the British government said on Tuesday it was prepared to go to court to ensure the proceeds reached war victims in Ukraine. Abramovich was sanctioned in the wake of Russia's invasion of Ukraine in 2022 and sold two-time Champions League winner Chelsea to a consortium fronted by Americans Todd Boehly and Clearlake Capital for 2.5 billion pounds ($3.2 billion) in May of that year. Abramovich said before the sale that net proceeds would go to a charitable foundation 'for the benefit of all victims of the war in Ukraine.' But the money remained frozen in a bank and the British government said it was still to make its way to those in need. A joint statement by Treasury chief Rachel Reeves and Foreign Secretary David Lammy said the government was ready to mount legal action. 'The government is determined to see the proceeds from the sale of Chelsea Football Club reach humanitarian causes in Ukraine, following Russia's illegal full-scale invasion. We are deeply frustrated that it has not been possible to reach agreement on this with Mr Abramovich so far,' they said. 'While the door for negotiations will remain open, we are fully prepared to pursue this through the courts if required, to ensure people suffering in Ukraine can benefit from these proceeds as soon as possible.' Abramovich was sanctioned when the British government targeted what then-Foreign Secretary Liz Truss described as 'oligarchs and kleptocrats' with close links to Russian President Vladimir Putin and 'complicit in his aggression.' The funds from the sale, however, still belong to Abramovich even though they are frozen. They cannot be used or moved without the issue of a licence from the Office of Financial Sanctions Implementation. The government insists they must be used for humanitarian purposes in Ukraine. ___ James Robson is at ___ AP soccer:

Far-Right Geert Wilders Torpedoes Dutch Coalition Over Immigration

The Dutch governing coalition collapsed Tuesday after far-right politician Geert Wilders pulled out of the ruling bloc, accusing the other parties of not doing enough to curb immigration and setting the stage for a possible snap election. Wilders demanded last week that his coalition partners, including the party of Prime Minister Dick Schoof, sign a 10-point plan to slash immigration, including denying all new asylum requests and returning Syrian refugees now that the Middle Eastern country has a new government.

Novo Banco Shareholders to Vote on Steps for €1 Billion IPO

Novo Banco SA shareholders will meet on Wednesday to vote on steps needed for a possible initial public offering of the Portuguese lender, although a final decision on whether to carry out a share sale won't be taken yet. The agenda of the June 4 shareholder meeting includes the admission of shares to trading on the stock exchange and the review of the bank's articles of association, a Novo Banco spokesman said. These actions are a 'condition precedent' for the IPO process, but the effectiveness of the resolutions is subject to the final decision of the selling shareholders, according to the spokesman.
