Swapnil Kusale Leads Indian Challenege At ISSF World Cup In Munich
Last Updated:
Swapnil Kusale will lead the Indian squad at the ISSF World Cup in Munich. Elavenil Valarivan and Palak return, while Ananya Naidu, Aditya Malra, and Nishant Rawat debut.
Paris Olympics bronze medallist Swapnil Kusale will lead the Indian squad at the season's third ISSF World Cup, starting Tuesday in Munich. He is joined by returning shooter Elavenil Valarivan and a host of international stars. Kusale regained his place in the men's 50m rifle 3 positions (3P) event following strong domestic performances.
Two-time Olympian Elavenil Valarivan returns to international competition for the first time since Paris, having previously competed in Buenos Aires and Lima as an RPO (Ranking Points Only) shooter. Reigning Asian Games champion Palak also rejoins the team in the women's air pistol category.
The World Cup will see several debuts, including newly-crowned women's air rifle national champion Ananya Naidu. In the men's air pistol, newcomers Aditya Malra and Nishant Rawat will represent India, demonstrating the nation's depth in the discipline ahead of future challenges.
A total of 695 athletes from 78 countries, including Olympic and World champions, will participate. The season began with a double-header in South America, where Indian rifle and pistol shooters secured 15 medals, including six golds, resulting in second and third-place finishes overall.
However, the Munich leg presents a sterner test, with a greater concentration of elite shooters. Legendary Chinese marksman Li Yuehong, the reigning Olympic champion and three-time Olympic medallist in the 25m rapid-fire pistol (RFP), will compete alongside 20-year-old Sheng Lihao, the reigning Olympic, world, and Asian champion and world-record holder.
China, victorious in the first two legs, sends a 22-member squad, including men's air pistol Olympic champion Xie Yu. Hosts Germany field a strong 27-member contingent led by pistol legend and former Olympic and world champion Christian Reitz. Anna Janssen, the women's air rifle qualification world record holder, will also compete.
Another RFP legend, Jean Quiquampoix, part of a 16-member French squad, completes the trio of legends who have dominated the event for the past decade. The 19-member Korean team includes two of their three reigning women Olympic champions: Yang Jiin (25m pistol) and Oh Yejin (10m air pistol).
Several Paris Olympic medallists, including the USA's Sagen Maddalena, Italy's Paolo Monna and Danilo Sollazzo, and Kazakhstan's Alexandra Le, are also set to compete.

WATCH: Fuming R Ashwin walks back unhappy with umpire's decision during TNPL game
Former Indian cricketer R Ashwin was seen fuming during the Tamil Nadu Premier League. The 38-year-old who plays for Dindigul Dragons was judged LBW off the bowling of Sai Kishore, who plays for IDream Tiruppur Tamizhans. Ashwin was seen in a long argument with the umpire, and he was thundering off the field and was seen hitting his pads in anger with the bat. 'Ashwin is saying 'he has bowled this from over the stumps, ma'am', arguing his case that it was pitched well outside leg stump,' said one of the commentators on AIR during the incident. Dindigul Dragons burnt both their reviews in the opening over in the hope of overturning the wide call from the umpire. Ash அண்ணா Not Happy அண்ணாச்சி! 😶🌫 📺 தொடர்ந்து காணுங்கள் | TNPL 2025 | iDream Tiruppur Tamizhans vs Dindigul Dragons | Star Sports தமிழில் #TNPLOnJioStar #TNPL #TNPL2025 — Star Sports Tamil (@StarSportsTamil) June 8, 2025 Dragons could not put on much of a score after Ashwin fell. Ashwin's 18 is the second-highest score alongside RK Jayant. Shivam Singh, with his 30, was the top scorer as the Dragons were bundled out for a mere 93 runs from 16.2 overs. Esakkimuthu A was the pick of the bowlers for Tamizhans with four wickets, with M Mathivannan picking three wickets. Skipper Sai Kishore too chipped in with a couple. R Ashwin's retirement after the third Test during the Border-Gavaskar Trophy came in as a bit of a surprise at the time. The off-spinner after bowling well in the Adelaide Test on a wicket that was not conducive for spinners was axed from the Gabba Test at the end of which he called it a day. With 537 wickets to his name when asked if he would have liked to have a farewell Test for his retirement he responded by saying, 'Where is the place?' 'I want to play more cricket. Where is the place? Obviously not in the Indian dressing room but from somewhere else. I want to be honest with the game. Imagine if I want to play the farewell Test but I do not deserve a place. Imagine, I am only in the team because it is my farewell Test. I don't want that. I felt there was more strength in my cricket. I could have played more but it is always better to finish when people ask 'why' and not 'why not',' Ashwin said on Ash ki Bath. 'What difference will this make if I came out with the ball and people are clapping? How long will people talk about it? When social media was not there, people talked about it and forgot after one week. There is no need for a farewell. The game has given us a lot and we have played with a lot of happiness.' Ashwin added.
