What is Bermuda Day? Get a front row seat to Bermuda's culture and celebration

Yahoo06-05-2025
Bermuda Day, a holiday held on the fourth Friday in May each year in Bermuda, kicks off the island's start of summer and marks the rise in water and air temperatures, signaling to Bermudians that it's acceptable to swim in the ocean.
An all-day celebration takes place, not just to signify the warm weather, but to celebrate the island's cultural heritage.
What Bermuda Day celebrates
After decades of civil unrest and protest, which reached a climax in 1977, a Royal Commission was created to understand the unrest. A decision was made to change a holiday that traced its roots to Queen Victoria's birthday—and was previously known as Empire Day and then became Commonwealth Day—to Bermuda Day. The first Bermuda Day Heritage Parade was held on May 24, 1979, to celebrate Bermudian culture and promote civic pride.
'What was once a commemoration of the island's colonial ties and a recognition of the reach of the British Empire has been transformed into a quintessentially Bermudian celebration of our heritage, resilience, unity, and culture,' says Jamari Douglas, vice president of marketing, public relations, and communications for the Bermuda Tourism Authority. 'Today, Bermuda Day is embraced island-wide as a celebration of Bermuda's community of diverse people and cultures that have blended together over centuries to create the island we call home.'
How to celebrate Bermuda Day
Over time, residents realized that one day was not enough time to celebrate the culture of Bermuda's people, so the entire month of May became Heritage Month.
Almost every day in May, visitors can find events that celebrate Bermuda's heritage, from jazz performances to art showcases to curated historical tours. 'Last year Long Story Short , a local tour company, partnered with Gosling's , a Bermuda rum and beverage company," says Douglas, "to host 'History with a Twist,' inviting participants on a tour of 18th-century buildings in the Town of St. George where attendees were treated to a signature craft cocktail made with locally sourced ingredients while learning about the history of the site."
On the fourth Friday of May, the Bermuda Day festivities begin around 8:00 a.m., with the Sinclair Packwood Memorial Race, explains Tim Rogers, a Bermuda resident of 41 years who leads educational travel programs for Road Scholar. At 8:30 a.m., the Bermuda Half Marathon Derby begins. It is a 13.1-mile running race that's been held since 1909, making it Bermuda's oldest race. The race starting line alternates each year between the east and west ends of the island, ending in the City of Hamilton, Bermuda's capital.
This annual event is only open to Bermuda residents, but tourists and locals cheer them on from the sidelines, explains Rogers, and hotels can tell tourists where to find the best viewing spots. 'They've got their deck chairs and their umbrellas parked off on the side of the road, and there's music blaring. It really does have a great vibe to it,' says Rogers.
After the race, everyone assembles in Hamilton to enjoy the parade, which starts at 1:30 p.m. and features dance groups, decorated floats, majorettes, and the Gombey troupes , who are the colorfully dressed masked dancers and drummers of Bermuda. The Gombey troupe's performances share stories of resistance that date back to before emancipation, such as the story of David and Goliath, and depict the resistance to enslavement, the triumph of good over evil, and the celebration of liberty, explains Douglas.
Dozens of colorful floats created by local charities and clubs fiercely compete for prizes. The parade route is interspersed with food stalls, some of which sell the island's signature dishes, like wahoo nuggets and fresh fish sandwiches.
Residents who don't go to the parade can migrate to the East End by the water and watch the Bermuda Fitted Dinghy Race. The race marks the start of the dinghy season, which ends in September. 'Bermuda has a long heritage of ship design, and the sailboats in use today are held to the same dimensions and standards [that were] set in 1883: 14-feet-1-inch overall from stem to stern with no other limitations, often resulting in a very large sail area, which can be a majestic sight to behold,' says Douglas.
Where to eat in Bermuda
The Pickled Onion restaurant and bar : This eclectic restaurant overlooks the street and has balcony seating, which is great for eating local cuisine and watching the parade from the restaurant. 'Book a table in advance, so you don't miss out,' says Rogers.
Bermuda Bistro at The Beach : Located on Front Street, this restaurant has a veranda where visitors can watch the parade and enjoy local food.
Other recommendations include White Horse Pub & Restaurant , Lost in the Triangle , Mad Hatters , The Swizzle Inn , Tom Moore's Tavern , and Wahoo's Bistro & Patio, where tourists can enjoy Bermuda's famous fish chowder.

How We Styled 'And Just Like That' – By The Show's Costume Designers

After three seasons, And Just Like That has come to a close. The Sex And The City spinoff chronicling the midlife adventures of Carrie Bradshaw, Miranda Hobbes and Charlotte York-Goldenblatt is bowing out after 33 episodes. In addition to the storylines of Big's death, Aidan's return, Charlotte parenting teens and Miranda ending her marriage to Steve, the fashion has remained a talking point, with fans old and new tuning in to see how our trio – and new characters LTW and Seema Patel – will be styled. 'There are so many good looks from season three,' Molly Rogers shares, appearing on a Zoom call with her AJLT co-costume designer Danny Santiago (both pictured left). 'I think we tried to move the needle a couple of times on Carrie, because she's writing a novel [set in 1864] and we wanted to reflect this in her clothes. So she has a lot of half booties on, a couple of hats and a few panniers [hooped petticoats] that pop a skirt out'. 'One of my favourite outfits of Carrie's is when she goes to Tiffany's with Charlotte in episode six,' shares Santiago. 'It's quite a beautiful look as she's being inspired by her book, and so it has the feeling of something from that era. She's got this beautiful vintage hat on with a beautiful dress, and underneath, these panniers that give an amazing silhouette, and gorgeous Maison Margiela pumps. For me, it's one of the best outfits from the season.' 'Carrie had on a pink nightgown in episode five. I watched them film on that day, and it was absolutely beautiful in the setting of that apartment,' adds Rogers, when questioned about her favourite look. 'Carrie's just in the kitchen with Miranda, but colour-wise, that was one of my favourite looks. We went to London and shopped, and we brought the nightgown and robe back. We also had fun styling the funeral in episode six because funerals mean hats, and us and hats, we go back a long way! We love a hat.' As the storylines of SATC and AJLT have evolved, so too have the styles of our three leads. Has the costuming of the show now become a collaborative process with each actor? 'For sure, I think because we all know each other so well,' Rogers shares. 'Kristin (Davis) is really good about texting me something that she saw in a magazine to find out if anybody has worn it. SJ [Sarah Jessica Parker] is really hands on in her fitting. She really does know how to display a costume in its best light. I've never worked with anybody quite like her.' Santiago agrees. 'When it comes to SJ having an accessory or carrying a bag, she's just so aware of everything, and knows how to make it look beautiful'. Addressing some of the more controversial fashion choices this season, Rogers recalls 'Everybody went insane about the [oversized gingham] Head In The Clouds Hat that Carrie wore to the park in the first episode. But again, do you want to see Carrie barefoot upstairs in her apartment? Do you want to see Carrie in a baseball cap? To me, it needs to be 'The Carrie Show', even if the looks cause an uproar'. On styling Miranda, Rogers explains that 'Cynthia [Nixon]'s more into jewellery choices. She is into the clothes, but she's a jewellery nut and she really loves to paw through the earrings and necklace combos; she enjoys that a lot. [Director, writer and executive producer] Michael Patrick King also wants to satisfy the audience's appetite for fashion.' While some of the storylines and the show's sudden end have generated a lot of online discourse, Rogers and Santiago always enjoy the fan reactions to their fashion Easter eggs, like when Carrie re-wears a familiar piece from an episode of Sex And The City. 'It's so much fun, and we're so careful about where we'll sneak those rewears in. A lot of the time we'll dress the closet with something recognisable hanging in the back to see if anybody notices,' tells Rogers. 'The fans really zoom into these things, and they get so happy to see those items again. It's like an old friend,' says Santiago. Rogers adds 'they really know what episode it's from. I don't even know that! They have watched so many reruns that it's truly incredible. It's wonderful, and I'm grateful. I'm always curious to see what the audience thinks about the fashion'. One of these moments was the reappearance of the printed Chanel blouse, originally seen in season three, episode 15 of Sex And The City. Originally worn backwards, the blouse was reworn for season three, episode three of And Just Like That, though fans noticed it wasn't the exact same item after forensic examination of the positioning of the coloured patches. 'Molly found that Chanel blouse in a vintage shop in New York. It actually came from Karen Elson's personal collection, and more than likely it might have been a sample from the Chanel showroom that was given to her. We've found some other pieces that Sarah Jessica didn't own from the first run, but now she does,' Santiago tells. 'I think that the internet was so excited to see that Chanel blouse again. At the time we never really looked at the reverse to see if it matched the original one, but that's how closely people watch,' Rogers says. 'SJ has such an incredible archive of everything from the beginning of the show. And we're able to go in and pick out pieces that we want,' Santiago tells. 'We carefully choose where we want to place each piece. Every now and then, we'll find things out there in the market that have already been worn in the show,'. Do the pair feel a pressure when styling one of the world's most talked about series? 'For us, what we do is very much in our own little bubble and we don't really look about to see what other people are saying,' Santiago shares. 'It's a very safe space when Molly and I are together and we're creating with the actors. It's very collaborative. We have our own little world that we create and being able to play is the best, because we can be open and creative'. As beloved as the SATC universe is, the reboot has received scrutiny from fans and critics alike. 'I don't do anything that I don't like, so it bothers me when people jump on the train of "let's hate watch", that's not what I'm here for,' says Rogers. 'I put a lot of joy and satisfaction in getting things into the room to see SJ's reaction and I find it all a delicious experience. I just do not pay attention to the negativity. I often wonder, can people enjoy anything anymore? It's just all so judgmental. I'm not that way. I live and let live.' In the same way as the storylines of Carrie, Miranda, Charlotte (and Samantha) will live on in television history, so too will the iconic looks and enduring fashion legacy that And Just Like That and Sex And The City have left. Is it worth it to pay for the Disney Dining Plan? How it worked for my family.

You can turn your Walt Disney World trip into a nearly all-inclusive vacation with one simple add-on. Starting at about $55 per night, the Disney Dining Plan allows guests staying at Disney's resort hotels to prepay for meals and snacks. It's one less thing to worry about on vacation. While it can help families budget and possibly save money, it may not be worth it for everyone. I gave it a try on a Disney World trip earlier this year. Here's what you should know about the Disney Dining Plan. How does the dining plan work at Disney? There are two versions of the Disney Dining Plan: the Disney Quick-Service Dining Plan and the Disney Dining Plan. For both options, everyone in your party must take part in the plan for the entire duration of your stay. The only exception is kids under age 3, who may eat off an adult's plate for free. Each meal includes a separate drink, like soda, juice, milk, coffee or tea. Where available, guests age 21 and over may choose an alcoholic beverage instead of a non-alcoholic one. All meals and snacks are allotted in a pool of credits at the start of your stay. You can use those on demand, as desired, whether it's only snacks one day and all table-service meals the next; the choice is yours. Just keep track of usage on the free My Disney Experience app, because your credits expire on the last day of your stay, and you don't want to waste what you've paid for. Some character meals, fine dining, and dinner shows require two table service meal credits instead of one. What is not included in Disney's dining plan? Neither dining plan covers three full meals a day, and Disney resort hotels don't offer complimentary breakfast, unless you're staying club level. Some guests order grocery delivery to their hotels for cheap, grab-and-go breakfasts, then save their plans for lunch and dinner. Others use a snack credit for a light meal or pay for a third meal out of pocket. Not all restaurants take part in the Disney Dining Plan. For example, California Grill and Victoria & Albert's are excluded. Guests can find a list of participating restaurants by searching the Dining section of Disney World's website and filtering by Dining Plan. Not all snacks and beverages are covered, either. Qualifying items are marked with a purple DDP symbol on their respective menus. Tips are not included in table-service meals and should be paid for separately. Additionally, resort-refillable mugs can only be used for soft drinks, coffee and tea refills at resort hotels. Some guests still take them into the parks to fill with ice water, which is available for free anywhere dispensed drinks are sold. How much does Disney's dining plan cost in 2025? This year, the Quick-Service Dining Plan costs $55.53 per adult and $23.20 per child per night of stay. The Disney Dining Plan costs $91.82 per adult and $28.79 per child per night of stay. Families can save up to 20% on kids' dining plans in 2025, when booked with a Disney Vacation Package. Next year, the Quick-Service Dining Plan will cost $56.78 per adult and $24.24 per child per night of stay. The Disney Dining Plan will cost $92.57 per adult and $29.99 per child. However, Disney is offering free Disney Dining Plans for kids in 2026, when adults in the same party buy the plan. Note: Only kids ages 3 to 9 qualify for child pricing on dining. Just like with theme park tickets, kids age 10 and over are priced as adults. Also, children may only order off the kids' menu at eateries where kids' menus are offered. How do I get the Disney Dining Plan? Guests can add the Disney Dining Plan onto Disney Vacation Packages booked through Disney World's website, reservations line or travel agents. Vacation packages include both a Disney resort hotel stay and theme park tickets. However, you don't need park tickets to purchase the plan. You just need to be staying at a Disney Resorts Collection hotel. Guests who want to add a dining plan to their hotels-only stay can call Disney World's reservations line at (407) 939-7639. Is the Disney Dining Plan worth it? It depends on the person. The Disney Dining can be worth it, particularly when discounts or promotions are available. I wasn't eligible for any promotions, but I made sure to get my money's worth. I had about $222 worth of food and drinks on a Dining Plan that cost under $184 for two nights, excluding tax and tips. Some guests look up menus in advance to pick out the priciest items available on the plans. I didn't go that far, but I opted for more expensive table-service restaurants, higher value snacks, and alcoholic beverages when included. Because I didn't have to worry about pricing, I felt free to try things I might not have splurged on à la carte. I also liked having most of my food and drinks paid off before I even started my vacation, though I still wound up spending plenty, taking my 21-year-old drinking around the world at EPCOT. Still, I wouldn't get a dining plan every trip because they aren't the best fit for my travel style. Both plans prioritize meals, but I prefer snacking throughout parks to try more things. I'm also pretty frugal when it comes to dining and don't usually spend as much on myself as the plans cost upfront. Next year's free kids dining promo may make the plans a no-brainer for some families, but my kids are older than age 9 and won't qualify. Only you can decide if a Disney Dining Plan will be worth it to you.

6 beauty lessons Victoria Beckham has taught us – From daring haircut trends to the benefits of dermaplaning

Victoria Beckham isn't just a style icon, she's also our go-to guru for glossy skin, smart routines, and fearless beauty transformations (honorary mention: 2007's peroxide pob). Over the years, she's both overtly and covertly shared a number of skincare, haircare and makeup tips that, now, have found their way into our routines. Here, we've rounded up six of the top beauty lessons we've gleaned: In a 2024 interview with Into The Gloss, Victoria shared that she uses an LED mask for reducing skin texture. "If I have time after cleansing, I might use my Celluma Pro, which I'm quite obsessed with at the moment. I've genuinely noticed a difference in my skin texture since I started using it," she said. LED masks, as such, can stimulate collagen, improve hydration levels, improve blood flow, calm redness and improve skin tone, to name a few benefits. So, if it's good enough for VB! Another VB skincare favourite? Well, per a number of videos on facialist Mélanie Grant's Instagram, Victoria regularly undergoes dermaplaning on her face to remove dead skin and peach fuzz, which in turn, boosts cell renewal and allows skincare to penetrate deeper into her skin. In March 2024, Victoria shared that every Sunday morning, she tried to find time for a pamper session. She indulges in a face mask, LED light therapy, and finishes with her signature Cell Rejuvenating Serum and Priming Moisturiser to prep for the week ahead. A little TLC can never hurt! When done right, a 'flushed' look can be super flattering, but Victoria knows better than to damage her skin in the sun. Instead, she shared in a recent tutorial that she uses her very own Victoria Beckham Beauty Colour Wash Blush Water Tint to recreate "a little rosy effect". Blending the makeup-skincare hybrid product into the skin with her fingers, she says, "I am obsessed with this going into summer, knowing that I can get that cute little flushed look whilst literally spending my whole summer in the shade." The Queen of the noughties 'Pob' (aka, Posh bob), Victoria, recently revived her iconic Spice Girls era haircut, which is now a celeb-favourite. Looking back at her hair evolution, it's clear to see that experimenting with new cuts and colours can be both empowering and exciting. From sharp bobs to sun-kissed highlights, VB has embraced change with confidence, reminding us that we shouldn't be afraid to switch things up. Her ever-evolving style proves that stepping out of our comfort zones can lead to striking, unforgettable looks. On more than one occasion, Victoria has said that she loves a smokey eye makeup look, calling it her go-to for adding drama and definition to her features. She's embraced the timeless look for years, proving that it can work at any age and that bold, sultry makeup doesn't have to be reserved for special occasions! Say it with me now: Beauty has no limits. So whether you're freshening up your skincare regime or ready to chop all of your lengths off, take a page from VB's book.
