Broadcom launches Jericho chip to advance AI data center networks

Broadcom's silicon division launched its next-generation Jericho networking chip on Monday, which is designed to connect data centers over 60 miles (96.5 km) apart and speed artificial intelligence computation The company's Jericho4 introduces and improves several features that increase the amount of networking traffic speeding across large networks that operate inside and between data centers.Building and deploying artificial intelligence has become more computationally intensive and requires stringing together thousands of graphics processors (GPUs). Cloud computing companies such as Microsoft and Amazon require faster, more sophisticated networking chips to ensure data moves efficiently.Security when transferring data beyond the physical walls of a data center is crucial for cloud companies because of the potential attacks that could intercept it ahead of reaching its destination.Broadcom's engineers designed the Jericho chips to be deployed at a massive scale, and a single system can encompass roughly 4,500 chips, according to Ram Velaga, senior vice president and general manager of Broadcom's Core Switching Group. To help mitigate issues around network congestion, the Jericho4 chips use the same high-bandwidth memory (HBM) designers such as Nvidia and AMD use for their AI processors. It's necessary because of the volume of data that needs to be stuffed into memory at any given moment of operation."The switch is actually holding that traffic (in memory) till the congestion frees up," Velaga said. "It means you need to have a lot of memory on the chip."The longer the distance the data must travel from the chip to its destination, the more memory designers must include in the chip as well.In addition to performance improvements, the Jericho4 also beefs up security by encrypting data.Broadcom opted to use TSMC's three nanometer process for the Jericho4.

OpenAI releases open-weight reasoning models optimised for running on laptops

OpenAI said on Tuesday it has released two open-weight language models that excel in advanced reasoning and are optimized to run on laptops with performance levels similar to its smaller proprietary reasoning models. An open-weight language model's trained parameters or weights are publicly accessible, which can be used by developers to analyze and fine-tune the model for specific tasks without requiring original training data. 'One of the things that is unique about open models is that people can run them locally. People can run them behind their own firewall, on their own infrastructure,' OpenAI co-founder Greg Brockman said in a press briefing. Open-weight language models are different from open-source models, which provide access to the complete source code, training data and methodologies. Separately, Amazon announced OpenAI's open-weight models are now available on its Bedrock generative AI marketplace in Amazon Web Services. It marks the first time an OpenAI model has been offered on Bedrock, said Atul Deo, Bedrock's director of product. 'OpenAI has been developing great models and we believe that these models are going to be great open-source options, or open-weight model options for customers,' said Deo, in an interview. He declined to discuss any contractual arrangements between AWS and OpenAI. Amazon shares tumbled last week after the company reported slowing growth in its AWS unit, particularly compared with rivals. The landscape of open-weight and open-source AI models has been highly contested this year. For a time, Meta's Llama models were considered the best, but that changed earlier this year when China's DeepSeek released a powerful and cost-effective reasoning model, while Meta struggled to deliver Llama 4. The two new OpenAI models are the first open models OpenAI has released since GPT-2, which was released in 2019. OpenAI's larger model, gpt-oss-120b, can run on a single GPU, and the second, gpt-oss-20b, is small enough to run directly on a personal computer, the company said. OpenAI said the models have similar performance to its proprietary reasoning models called o3-mini and o4-mini, and especially excel at coding, competition math and health-related queries. The models were trained on a text-only dataset which in addition to general knowledge, focused on science, math and coding knowledge. OpenAI did not release benchmarks comparing the open-weight models to competitors' models such as the DeepSeek-R1 model. Microsoft-backed OpenAI, currently valued at $300 billion, is currently raising up to $40 billion in a new funding round led by Softbank Group.

OpenAI eyes $500 billion valuation in potential employee share sale: Report

ChatGPT maker OpenAI is in early talks for a potential secondary stock sale that would allow current and former employees to sell shares, valuing the company at around $500 billion, a source familiar with the matter told Reuters on Tuesday. Bloomberg was first to report the news. The Microsoft-backed company aims to raise billions through the sale, with existing investors, including Thrive Capital, expressing interest in buying some of the employee shares, the source said. Thrive Capital declined to comment on a Reuters request. Separately, OpenAI is still in the process of raising $40 billion in a new funding round led by SoftBank Group at a $300 billion valuation to advance AI research, expand computational infrastructure and enhance its tools.

Bad news for employees of this company as it heads for another layoffs, sack hundreds of employees working at THIS dept, the company is…, not Infosys or TCS

Bad news for employees of this company as it heads for major layoffs, sacks 20 per cent workforce, closes core units in..., the company is..., not Infosys or TCS Amazon is making big changes to its audio business and because of that, about 110 people working at its podcast company, Wondery, are losing their jobs. This move is part of Amazon's plan to make its operations more efficient. In a message to staff, Steve Boom, who is in charge of Amazon's audio, Twitch, and gaming departments said that Wondery's storytelling podcast teams will now join Audible, another company owned by Amazon. The content made by individual creators will move to a new group called 'Creator Services' inside Amazon. This news was first shared by Bloomberg. As part of the changes, Wondery's CEO, Jen Sargent, will also be leaving her job. Boom said these steps are being taken to help Amazon grow in the right direction and offer a better experience to creators, listeners, and advertisers. Still, he admitted it is a tough time for the people who are losing their jobs, and they have already been informed. Amazon bought Wondery back in 2020 to strengthen its original audio content. Wondery became popular with hit storytelling podcasts like Dirty John and Dr. Death , and later signed big names like Jason and Travis Kelce's New Heights and Dax Shepard's Armchair Expert. Steve Boom said the podcast world has changed quickly. Platforms like YouTube, which focus on video podcasts, have taken the lead. This has forced audio-only platforms to rethink how they work. Making, promoting, and earning money from storytelling podcasts is very different compared to content made by individual creators, especially now that video content is more popular. By moving Wondery's storytelling shows to Audible and focusing separately on content from creators, Amazon hopes to adjust to this fast-changing market. Still, going up against YouTube's video-first approach is a new challenge for Amazon's audio plans.
