Amazon is making big changes to its audio business and because of that, about 110 people working at its podcast company, Wondery, are losing their jobs. This move is part of Amazon's plan to make its operations more efficient. In a message to staff, Steve Boom, who is in charge of Amazon's audio, Twitch, and gaming departments said that Wondery's storytelling podcast teams will now join Audible, another company owned by Amazon. The content made by individual creators will move to a new group called 'Creator Services' inside Amazon.
This news was first shared by Bloomberg. As part of the changes, Wondery's CEO, Jen Sargent, will also be leaving her job.
Boom said these steps are being taken to help Amazon grow in the right direction and offer a better experience to creators, listeners, and advertisers. Still, he admitted it is a tough time for the people who are losing their jobs, and they have already been informed.
Amazon bought Wondery back in 2020 to strengthen its original audio content. Wondery became popular with hit storytelling podcasts like Dirty John and Dr. Death , and later signed big names like Jason and Travis Kelce's New Heights and Dax Shepard's Armchair Expert.
Steve Boom said the podcast world has changed quickly. Platforms like YouTube, which focus on video podcasts, have taken the lead. This has forced audio-only platforms to rethink how they work. Making, promoting, and earning money from storytelling podcasts is very different compared to content made by individual creators, especially now that video content is more popular.
By moving Wondery's storytelling shows to Audible and focusing separately on content from creators, Amazon hopes to adjust to this fast-changing market. Still, going up against YouTube's video-first approach is a new challenge for Amazon's audio plans.
