On the auspicious occasion of '
Raksha Bandhan
',
Hridaynath Mangeshkar
opens up about his sister, 'Bharat Ratna' Lata Mangeshar and his memories with her. He reveals how she was a father figure to the siblings, his opinion on her as a singer, how she could take up challenges amidst more.
Excerpts:
What are your earliest memories of Lata Didi?
Of a father figure. When our father (Pandit Dinanath Mangeshkar) passed away, she looked after all us siblings like a father. She made sure all of us were fed before she ate. Every morsel that I eat, I am reminded of Didi's sacrifices for us. There were times she would go hungry but she made sure we ate.
Did you attend her recordings?
Not frequently. I remember attending her recording of Main piya teri tu jaane ya jaane (Basant Bahar) and Kahin deep jalehahin dil (Bees Saal Baad).
Before the recording of Kahin deep jale, she had some problems with her throat. The doctors said she may not be able to sing again. But she bounced back, and how! If you wanted Didi to do something , all you had to do was tell her she won't be able to do it.
What's your opinion of Lataji as a singer?
I grew up with her. I guess an artiste's personality is bound to reflect in his or her art. LataMangeshkar is nota personality that comes along in every century, not even in two or three centuries.
Her talent transcends time. It's our good fortune that I as a composer and you as a journalist co-existed with her. Yeh bade bhagya ki baat hai.
I agree completely. She used to tell me she was scared of singing your tunes...
She was just being a humble artiste to honour her brother. Her command over the twelve notes without overdoing them was amazing. When she did a happy song she made us laugh. When she did a sad song she made us cry. She could convey all emotions through her voice. I've no words to describe her talent. A talent like her comes along once in a thousand years. Nobody has heard the mythic Tansen. But to our good fortune we have heard
Lata Mangeshkar
.
She became a legend in her own lifetime. There are other good singers like Kishore Kumar, Mohd Rafi, Asha Bhosle and Anuradha Paudwal. But no one can equal Didi. I've been a practicing musician for seventy years. I've never encountered a singer like her. And I'm not saying this because she's my sister.
Go on…
I could say the same about my other sisters Ashaji and Ushaji or about my guru Ustad Amir Khan. But I won't. They are not as timeless as Lata Mangeshkar. There was only one Krishna in the Mahabharata. Likewise there's only one Lata Mangeshkar.

Shilpa Shetty inspired fitness lovers with a powerful mobility move for strength and flexibility. Shilpa Shetty has once again taken the spotlight with her latest fitness mantra. Known for her dedication to health and wellness, she regularly shares workout tips that blend yoga, strength training and functional exercises. This time, Shilpa is encouraging her followers to try a mobility move that focuses on stronger hips, better ankle flexibility, improved posture and overall joint health. In a recent reel shared, Shilpa Shetty demonstrated a mobility drill that she swears by for long-term fitness. The exercise requires lowering the body until the hips touch the floor and then rising back to a standing position without external support. While it looks simple, the movement demands balance, flexibility and strength. Encouraging her audience to join in, Shilpa said, 'Try and go down as much as you can, touch your hips to the floor, and then try standing up. I did it. Can you?" This statement turned the workout into a fun challenge, motivating her followers to test their mobility and control. Benefits of the Mobility Move The exercise highlighted by Shilpa Shetty is not just physically engaging but also provides multiple health benefits. It helps boost mobility across the thoracic spine, lumbar region and lower body. It also opens up tight areas such as the hips, ankles, groin and adductors, making movement smoother and more comfortable. Additionally, the move improves posture, increases flexibility and develops greater control over the body. Shilpa also pointed out that it can serve as a joint health check. If someone can perform this move with ease, it is a sign of above-average mobility and healthy joints. Asha Bhosle admits she adopted a more Western singing style to avoid competing with Lata Mangeshkar: ‘Our voices were very similar initially'

Asha Bhosle, 92, is still going strong. The singer is still touring the world as well as recording new songs. She also holds the Guinness record for the most number of songs recorded at over 13,000. That's also because Asha has adapted with the times ever since she began singing in the 1940s. She admits that her determination to expand her versatility is what has enabled her to record so many songs over the past 80 years. 'In our childhood, us sisters had the same thin voice,' said Asha Bhosle, referring to her sister and late legendary singer Lata Mangeshkar, who was four years elder to her. 'After singing a couple of songs, I realized I'd have to change my singing style because Didi is already there, and her singing is so good. I didn't want to be pitted against her,' added the song. 'I had the habit of watching English films and listening to English songs. They sing very operatically. But there's no quivering in our voices when we sing here in India. Indian songs are sung straight. I wanted to be able to sing all kinds of songs. So I brought the Western singing style to India. I trained myself accordingly then,' shared Asha. Asha Bhosle ability to incorporate the Western singing style allowed her to extend her appeal to the next generation of the audience. 'Young boys used to really like my songs. When they get old, they prefer the classical style of singing. So, I've been moving along with the upcoming generations. Like how I sing and groove to 'Kaala Chashma' today. Now, the new generation's style is changing again.' The veteran singer referred to the recent viral video in which she grooved to 'Kaala Chashma' while wearing dark sunglasses on stage at a concert in Mumbai. The popular dance song is composed by Prem Hardeep and Kam Dhillon, and written by Amrik Singh and Kumaar. A rehashed version of the same was filmed on Katrina Kaif and Sidharth Malhotra in Nitya Mehra's 2016 sci-fi romance Baar Baar Dekho. Asha Bhosle was honoured with the Padma Vibhushan in 2008 and the Dadasaheb Phalke Award in 2001. She won her first two Filmfare Awards for 'Garibon Ki Suno' from Dus Lakh (1967) and 'Pardes Mein Rehne Do' from Shikar (1969), even as she competed in the same category with her sister, Lata Mangeshkar. Lata Mangeshkar refused to accept awards after 1968 since she wanted upcoming singers to be acknowledged instead. Asha Bhosle also followed in her sister's footsteps and refused to accept any more awards post 1978. Even then, she's won the maximum number of Filmfare Awards in the Best Female Playback Singer category, along with Alka Yagnik. Also Read — 'I wrote a dirty song': Asha Bhosle recalls lyricist Majrooh Sultanpuri leaving the studio out of embarrassment as she recorded 'Piya tu ab to aaja' 'I'd stopped accepting awards because only Didi and I used to get all the awards every time. But the other girls who used to sing then, they should also get the award, right? So I thought it'd be a good thing to stop accepting awards,' explained Asha. She was also honoured with the Lifetime Achievement Award by Filmfare in 2001.
