Time of India2 days ago
SSA retirees benefits august 20:
Retirees across the United States are waiting for their next Social Security payment, and for one group of beneficiaries, the money will arrive on
Wednesday, August 20, 2025
. These monthly checks are the financial backbone for millions of households, covering rent, groceries, prescriptions, and rising utility costs. But how much can retirees really expect to receive this month?
Who gets paid on August 20?
The
Social Security Administration (SSA)
distributes benefits on a staggered schedule each month. Payments go out in three rounds, based on the beneficiary's date of birth:
Birthdays between the 1st–10th:
paid on the second Wednesday
Birthdays between the 11th–20th:
paid on the third Wednesday
Birthdays between the 21st–31st:
paid on the fourth Wednesday
Since August 20 is the
third Wednesday of the month
, this round will cover people born
between the 11th and 20th
of any month. That includes retirees, people receiving disability benefits (SSDI), and survivors who qualify through a late spouse or parent's work record.

. The average retiree will get around
$1,907
, though your exact amount depends on your work history and claiming age.
Live Events
How much will retirees receive on average?
Not everyone gets the same Social Security check. The amount depends on your lifetime earnings, retirement age, and work history. But here are the
2025 averages, confirmed by SSA data
:
Retired workers:
$1,907 per month on average
Maximum benefit for high earners retiring at full age:
up to
$4,873
Disabled workers (SSDI):
about
$1,537
Widows, widowers, and dependents:
payments vary depending on family circumstances
For perspective:
while $1,907 is the national average, many retirees see slightly less because they claimed benefits early, while others who delayed retirement until age 70 may be collecting much larger checks.
How do you know your exact payment?
Every recipient's amount is unique. The most reliable way to confirm your August 20 deposit is by checking your
'my Social Security' account
at ssa.gov. The portal shows your monthly benefit, payment history, and upcoming deposit dates.
If you're not tech-savvy, the SSA still mails statements, and you can also opt for text or email alerts once you're signed up for direct deposit.
What if your Social Security payment doesn't arrive?
Sometimes payments don't hit bank accounts on time. If you don't see your August 20 check immediately, experts recommend:
Wait three business days
before reporting a missing payment
Call SSA directly
at 1-800-772-1213
Check your bank details
and verify no changes to your direct deposit
Update your personal information
if you've recently moved or changed banks
Late payments are rare but can happen due to system delays or incorrect account information.
Can you change your Social Security payment date?
No — the SSA's calendar is fixed and tied to birth dates. But you can change how you receive your benefits. Most retirees now use
direct deposit
or the
Direct Express debit card
, which is faster and more secure than waiting for a paper check.
Why this August payment matters
With inflation still stretching household budgets in 2025, Social Security payments are more than just routine deposits. They remain the
primary source of income for about two-thirds of retirees
, according to the Center on Budget and Policy Priorities. For many, the
August 20 check will decide whether bills get paid on time
or whether groceries need to be stretched until the next deposit.

Social security windfall: Retirees could see up to $5,108 deposited this week - who qualifies for the payout

Social Security August 2025 payments : Millions of Americans who depend on Social Security will see their weekly payments this week, with some retired workers possibly receiving deposits of up to $5,108, the top benefit for people who waited until age 70 to start receiving, as per a report. Social Security Payments Arriving This Week The Social Security Administration (SSA) handles payments for more than 70 million recipients, such as retirees, disabled workers, and survivors of deceased wage earners, according to Newsweek. In order to process this huge volume of recipients, the agency distributes payments throughout the month, as per the report. This Wednesday, August 20, those who get retirement, spousal, or survivor benefits and have birthdays between the 11th and 20th of any month will receive their payments, as per the Newsweek report. Average vs. Maximum Benefit Breakdown On average, Social Security benefits were around $2,002 a month as of May 2025, according to the report. But what you get depends a lot on your lifetime earnings and when you start collecting, as per the Newsweek report. Live Events A SSA spokesperson explained that "The average Social Security benefit amount changes monthly," adding, "Social Security benefits are based on a worker's highest 35 years of earnings. As wages tend to rise over time, each new group of retirees raises the average benefit amount, since their benefit calculations typically reflect higher earnings," as quoted in the report. If you start at the earliest age of 62, you could get up to $2,831 per month, waiting until full retirement age of 67 years raises that to a maximum of $4,018, reported Newsweek. But if you hold off until age 70, you could receive the highest possible payout, $5,108 each month, according to the report. This year's increase was 2.5% and took effect in January 2025, according to Newsweek. The Senior Citizens League (TSCL), a nonprofit that tracks these adjustments, has raised its outlook for next year, it expects next year's COLA to be a bit higher, around 2.7% due to rising prices, reported Newsweek. TSCL executive director, Shannon Benton said "With the COLA announcement around the corner, seniors across America are holding their breath," as quoted in the report. Benton added that, "While a higher COLA would be welcome because their monthly benefits will increase, many will be disappointed. TSCL's research shows that many seniors believe the COLA does not adequately capture the inflation they experience," as quoted in the Newsweek report. The official COLA for 2026 will be announced by the SSA in October and would start showing up in payments from January, according to the report. Upcoming top-class sports infrastructure reshapes urban planning in Ahmedabad clusters

Ahmedabad: The ripple effect of Ahmedabad's ambitious vision to potentially host the 2030 Commonwealth Games (CWG) and 2036 Olympic Games here is now visible in the city's urban blueprint. As part of the plan for Olympic-ready infrastructure coming up in Manipur-Godhavi area, the Ahmedabad Urban Development Authority (Auda) is redrawing neighbouring Shela's Town Planning Scheme 1, reallocating land to accommodate more parking space, and wider roads. In Manipur-Godhavi, the state govt is developing the South West Ahmedabad Sports Arena (SWASA), which falls under TP Scheme 429. "Shela's TP Scheme 1 shares its northern boundary with TP Scheme 429, where the sports complex is coming up. Infrastructure continuity is vital, hence the revision," revealed a senior Auda official. As a consequence more land is now being allocated for wider roads and improve parking facilities in neighbouring areas. "Specifically, nearly 60,000 sq m more land has been allocated for road networks in Shela's TP Scheme 1, taking the total to 4,55,559 sq m. Parking allocation, which previously stood at zero, now measures 32,617 sq m. by Taboola by Taboola Sponsored Links Sponsored Links Promoted Links Promoted Links You May Like Use an AI Writing Tool That Actually Understands Your Voice Grammarly Install Now Undo An additional 4,079 sq m has been earmarked for an urban forest," a senior Auda official said. Maharashtra sets up committee to study US tariff impact and mitigation meaures

Mumbai: Admitting that the 50% tariff imposed by the US is affecting major industries in the state, the Maharashtra government has set up a committee led by former state industries secretary Apurva Chandra (retd) to study the impact on Maharashtra and recommend measures to mitigate it. Chandra is currently serving as principal advisor in the ministry of defence. "This new tariff regime has threatened the competitiveness of Indian exporters in one of their largest markets, as the US accounts for 18% of India's exports, which accounts for 2.2% of India's GDP. It is necessary to regularly review the impact of similar changes in other countries and organisations on the export-oriented industries of the state," said the govt resolution issued on Monday. "In order to protect our economy and shareholders, Maharashtra should take appropriate measures to mitigate this impact, and to ensure resilience against protectionist policies while seeking growth opportunities in alternative markets," it said.
