How South Africa's new trade deal with China could reshape its fruit export market

As South Africa continues to scramble in search of alternative markets after the US slapped 30% tariffs on South African goods, the Minister of Agriculture, John Steenhuisen, has revealed that a new trade deal with China is close to being finalised.
Steenhuisen confirmed the news on Wednesday, saying during his last visit to China with Deputy President Paul Mashatile, the Chinese government provided a draft protocol for the export of five types of stone fruit.
"I can today share that after the last visit that I attended with the Deputy President in China and our visit as the Agriculture Minister to the GACC, we were given the protocol for stone fruit," Steenhuisen said.
He added that it was the first time China had negotiated more than one product with South Africa at a time, as they usually focus on just one fruit type per agreement.
"It's significant in a number of ways. It's the first time that China has negotiated more than one product with us at a time. It's usually their focus on one fruit type.
"We got five in this particular deal: stone fruit, apricots, peaches, nectarines, plums, and prunes".
The minister further said that the government now hopes to "conclude this protocol on the sidelines of the G20, the Agriculture G20 next month".
"We hope to conclude this protocol on the sidelines of the G20, the Agriculture G20 next month, and that will then open the way for stone fruit from South Africa into China.
"The next mission thereafter is cherries and mangoes, and we are already advanced in terms of the negotiations there, and I think that would open huge opportunities for us to be able to get those particular products there".

US Tariffs: SA negotiates MAJOR stone fruit trade deal with China
In some good news for the agricultural sector, Minister John Steenhuisen has announced five new trade agreements for stone fruit exports to China. This marks the first time South Africa has negotiated more than one production agreement with the Far East trade giant. The five stone fruit products are apricots, peaches, nectarines, plums, and prunes. The trade agreements will be formalised during the upcoming G20 summit. During the announcement, the Agriculture Minister emphasised how the new protocols are set to open fresh avenues for local farmers, providing alternative markets to counter the impact of ongoing US trade tariffs. SA government continues in its mission to protect South Africa's US market share while opening new opportunities in Asia and the Middle East. 'In terms of diversification, China is a huge opportunity for South Africa,' Steenhuisen said. 'With a population of 1.6 billion, that's a lot of mouths to feed.' 'We hope to conclude this protocol on the sidelines of the G20 next month.' Once these stone fruit trade agreements with China are established, cherries and mangoes are next on the list of exports. A 30% tariff on key exports to the US, including citrus, wine, sugar cane, and beef, took effect on 1 August. This all but ended the duty-free access South Africa enjoyed under the Africa Growth and Opportunities Act (AGOA). While citrus exports managed to avoid major disruption this season, the stonefruit sector was facing a more immediate challenge. Steenhuisen is also working with the Minister of Trade, Industry and Competition to safeguard South Africa's position in the US market. A revised proposal addressing Washington's concerns has been submitted, and key barriers for poultry, blueberries, and pork have already been resolved. Shipments of these products from the US are expected to arrive soon. Let us know by leaving a comment below, or send a WhatsApp to 060 011 021 1. Here is the forecast petrol price for September 2025
The latest petrol and diesel price projections show that there could well be some good news for South Africa's motorists at the pumps early next month. Both the petrol and diesel prices are set to drop – should market conditions remain the same for the next three weeks. In recent days the rand has strengthened against the dollar while the brent crude price has dropped – a perfect recipe for good news for motorists. Below, the latest projections as received by The South African website from the Central Energy Fund (CEF), effective Thursday, 14 August. FUEL PRICE CHANGE Petrol 93 decrease of 15 cents Petrol 95 decrease of 8 cents Diesel 0.05% decrease of 33 cents Diesel 0.005% decrease of 35 cents Illuminating Paraffin decrease of 26 cents If the market conditions were to remain consistent for the remainder of the month – an unlikely scenario with the rand/dollar exchange rate fluctuating and the oil price ever changing – a decrease of 15 cents is expected for petrol 93 octane motorists and a decrease of eight cents for 95 users. Meanwhile, diesel motorists would see something between a 33 and 35 cents per litre decrease. Finally, illuminating paraffin is expected to drop by 26 cents in price. FUEL PRICE IN SOUTH AFRICA IMPACTED BY TWO MAIN FACTORS: 1. The international price of petroleum products, driven mainly by oil prices 2. The rand/dollar exchange rate used in the purchase of these products Oil price At the time of publishing the brent crude oil price is $66.37 a barrel. Exchange rate At the time of publishing the rand/dollar exchange rate is R17.58/$. The final overall price changes for both petrol and diesel will be confirmed early next month with the new prices taking effect at midnight on Tuesday, 2 September 2025. Go easy on the accelerator until then, Mzansi.
