Drugs worth over RM4.67mil found in abandoned car

IPOH: What seemed like just another sports utility vehicle (SUV) abandoned near a residential area in Gerik, took a dark turn when police uncovered a large quantity of drugs worth over RM4.67mil hidden inside.
Perak police chief Comm Datuk Noor Hisam Nordin said the incident occurred on June 6 at about 1am near a treatment plant at Taman Pulai Savana.
He said the vehicle appeared to have been there for a while, which drew suspicion from the public and prompted the patrol car, and later a criminal investigation team to inspect.
He said checks inside the vehicle's boot revealed a total of 123,165g of drugs consisting of 80 packets of methamphetamine and 39 packets of ketamine worth over RM4.67mil, among the biggest seizure in the state up to now for this year.
'However, the driver of the SUV was no where to be found.
'Checks on the SUV's chassis showed it was tampered and the engine numbers altered,' he told a press conference at the state police contingent's headquarters here yesterday.
Comm Noor Hisam said police suspect the vehicle was left at the site for about 30 minutes as the engine was still warm.
'We believe the drugs were intended for distribution within Perak and possibly neighbouring states. We suspect they entered Perak from a neighbouring state via Gerik, and we are still investigating why the vehicle was abandoned at the location.
'The vehicle was in a good condition and operational.
'Upon checking with the Road Transport Department, the chassis number belongs to a nurse in Serdang, Selangor, and we believe the vehicle to be a clone,' he said.
The case he said is being investigated under Section 39B of the Dangerous Drugs Act 1952.

Justice Muhammad Jamil Hussin ruled that the prosecution has failed to prove a prima facie case against the 32-year-old. In his judgment, the judge said the prosecution had failed to prove that the accused had control, custody and possession of two imitation pistols and 305g of cannabis. He noted that a car, in which the items were found, belonged to Muhammed Yusoff, and the car keys and remote control were in his possession. 'It is undeniable that he was near the car and opened the door when the police conducted their operation. Justice Muhammad Jamil also said the accused's behaviour during the operation was consistent with that of a person with no knowledge of the items found in the car. 'However, the police did not carry out any investigation to verify this claim. The failure to investigate has denied the accused the right to a fair trial. 'Therefore, it is not safe for the court to call the accused to enter his defence. 'I hereby make the order to discharge and acquit the accused without calling for his defence,' the judge added. On Sept 12, 2024, Muhammed Yusoff was charged with trafficking in 305g of cannabis. The drug was found in his vehicle near the surau at the Kuala Lumpur police headquarters at 10.15am on Sept 6, 2024. He was charged under Section 39B(1)(a) of the Dangerous Drugs Act 1952, which carries a sentence of life imprisonment and at least 12 strokes of the cane, upon conviction. He was also charged with possessing two imitation firearms by the roadside near a condominium in Jalan Bukit Kiara at 9.25am the same day. The charge was framed under Section 36(1) of the Arms Act 1960, which provides for a maximum penalty of one year in prison, a fine of up to RM5,000, or both, upon conviction. Muhammed Yusoff, who wore a striped long-sleeve shirt, was greeted by a large group of people outside of the court complex after his release. He told reporters that he was grateful for the court's decision and thanked his family, lawyers and others who supported him. Throughout the trial, Muhammed Yusoff was detained at the Sungai Buloh prison as the offence he was accused of did not allow for bail.

Gerik crash: Bus driver to be charged tomorrow
IPOH: The driver of the bus involved in the crash that claimed the lives of 15 Universiti Pendidikan Sultan Idris (UPSI) students in Gerik on Monday will be charged tomorrow. Perak police chief Datuk Noor Hisam Nordin said the 39-year-old man, who was apprehended after being discharged from Taiping Hospital, would be taken to the Gerik Court. "Tomorrow, after Friday prayers, he will be charged at the Gerik Magistrate's Court," he said when contacted today. Earlier, it was reported that police arrested the bus driver at about 5.45pm after he was discharged from hospital. He will be taken to the Gerik police headquarters to facilitate investigations under Section 41(1) of the Road Transport Act 1987 for causing death by reckless or dangerous driving. It is learnt that the man was accompanied by three policemen, believed to be from the Gerik police headquarters, when they left the hospital compound. It was reported that the bus driver was among those injured in the crash. Noor Hisam had said the driver sustained injuries to his hand. On Monday, the bus, carrying 42 UPSI students, was travelling from Jertih, Terengganu, to the university's main campus when it collided with a Perodua Alza at Km53 of the East-West Highway in Gerik. Thirteen students died at the scene, while two others succumbed to their injuries in hospital. The driver, his attendant, the other UPSI students and a family of four in the Alza all sustained injuries of varying degrees.

Dexter Timban Suning from Kampung Tunku Abdul Rahman, Lambir entered the plea after the charge under Section 15(1)(a) of the Dangerous Drugs Act 1952, punishable under Section 15(1) of the same Act, was read to him. The Section provides for a fine not exceeding RM5,000 or up to two years' imprisonment upon conviction. Magistrate Ashok Linggam also ordered the accused to undergo two years of supervision by the authorities. According to the case facts, Dexter was tested positive for amphetamine and methamphetamine at the Miri Narcotics Criminal Investigation Division office at around 7.30pm on Aug 1, 2019. Prosecuting was Insp Mudzilawati Abdul Rahman, while the accused did not have legal representation.
