The last full reversal took place approximately 780,000 years ago – leaving some experts to predict another flip is imminent.
Now, researchers have created a terrifying soundscape to represent the chaos of this event.
Using paleomagnetic data – the record of Earth's ancient magnetic field preserved in rocks – from around the globe, scientists have constructed a model of the magnetic field before, during and after this historic reversal.
They also created a musical piece – a 'soundscape' – to represent the haunting sounds of the flip, called the Matuyama-Brunhes reversal.
The team, from the Helmholtz Centre for Geosciences in Potsdam, Germany, used three violins and three cellos to create a 'disharmonic cacophony' that mirrors the complex dynamics of a flip.
The clip starts off as melodic and makes for pleasant listening as it represents the poles while stable. However, it sounds more erratic and eerie as the magnetic fields begin to flux and change.

Earth's magnetic field is generated by the roiling liquid metals deep beneath the crust.
It extends from the Earth's interior into space, acting like a protective shield by diverting harmful charged particles from the Sun away from our planet.
A flip doesn't happen overnight but takes place gradually, over centuries to thousands of years.
If a magnetic flip were to happen again, some experts claim it could render parts of Earth 'uninhabitable' by knocking out power grids.
Communication systems could be seriously disrupted, and compasses would point south – meaning Greenland would be in the southern hemisphere and Antarctica in the North.
While it sounds terrifying, and would leave life on our planet exposed to higher amounts of solar radiation, it's unlikely to cause catastrophic events or mass extinctions.
Last year, researchers also transformed readings of an epic upheaval of Earth's magnetic field that took place some 41,000 years ago.
The Laschamp event saw our planet's magnetic North and South poles weaken, with the magnetic field tilting on its axis.
What is Earth's magnetic field?
Earth's magnetic field is a layer of electrical charge that surrounds our planet. The field protects life on Earth because it deflects charged particles fired from the sun known as 'solar wind'.
Without this protective layer, these particles would likely strip away the Ozone layer, our only line of defence against harmful UV radiation.
Scientists believe the Earth's core is responsible for creating its magnetic field. As molten iron in the Earth's outer core escapes it creates convection currents. These currents generate electric currents which create the magnetic field.
The soundscape was captured using data from a constellation of European Space Agency satellites.
Researchers mapped the movement of Earth's magnetic field lines during the event and produced a stereo sound version using natural noises including wood creaking and rocks falling.
The noises in the video represent a time when the Earth's magnetic field was at just five per cent of its current strength.
While the Earth's magnetic field did return to normal – over the course of around 2,000 years – its strength has decreased again by 10 per cent over the past 180 years, experts have found.
However, a mysterious area in the South Atlantic has emerged where the geomagnetic field strength is decreasing even more rapidly.
The area is called the South Atlantic Anomaly and has seen satellites malfunctioning over it several times due to exposure to highly charged particles from the sun.
This has led to speculation that Earth is heading towards a magnetic pole flip.
However, some experts have provide reassurance that the poles aren't going to flip anytime soon.
Researchers previously pieced together data on Earth's geomagnetic field strength stretching back 9,000 years and say there's no evidence a reversal is on the cards.
'We have mapped changes in the Earth's magnetic field over the past 9,000 years, and anomalies like the one in the South Atlantic are probably recurring phenomena linked to corresponding variations in the strength of the Earth's magnetic field', said Andreas Nilsson, a geologist at Lund University.
The team analysed burnt archaeological artefacts, volcanic samples and sediment drill cores – all of which carry information about Earth's magnetic field.
Reassuringly, the team's model suggests that the South Atlantic Anomaly will recover of its own accord and is unlikely to trigger the reversal that some have anticipated.
'Based on similarities with the recreated anomalies, we predict that the South Atlantic Anomaly will probably disappear within the next 300 years, and that Earth is not heading towards a polarity reversal', Mr Nilsson said.
The Earth's magnetic field is in a permanent state of change.
Magnetic north drifts around and every few hundred thousand years the polarity flips so a compass would point south instead of north.
The strength of the magnetic field also constantly changes and currently it is showing signs of significant weakening.
Life has existed on the Earth for billions of years, during which there have been many reversals.
There is no obvious correlation between animal extinctions and those reversals. Likewise, reversal patterns do not have any correlation with human development and evolution.
It appears that some animals, such as whales and some birds use Earth's magnetic field for migration and direction finding.
Since geomagnetic reversal takes a number of thousands of years, they could well adapt to the changing magnetic environment or develop different methods of navigation.
Radiation at ground level would increase, however, with some estimates suggesting that overall exposure to cosmic radiation would double causing more deaths from cancer. 'But only slightly,' said Professor Richard Holme.
'And much less than lying on the beach in Florida for a day. So if it happened, the protection method would probably be to wear a big floppy hat.'

Electric grid collapse from severe solar storms is a major risk. As the magnetic field continues to weaken, scientists are highlighting the importance off-the grid energy systems using renewable energy sources to protect the Earth against a black out.
'The very highly charged particles can have a deleterious effect on the satellites and astronauts,' added Dr Mona Kessel, a Magnetosphere discipline scientist at Nasa.
In one area, there is evidence that a flip is already occurring. 'The increasing strength of the South Atlantic anomaly, an area of weak field over Brazil, is already a problem,' said Professor Richard Holme.
The Earth's climate could also change. A recent Danish study has found that the earth's weather has been significantly affected by the planet's magnetic field.
They claimed that fluctuations in the number of cosmic rays hitting the atmosphere directly alter the amount of cloud covering the planet.

What makes a psychopath? In a quest to determine whether it comes down to nature or nurture, a team of neurologists in China has discovered that certain brains are hardwired to show psychopathic behaviors, including aggression and rule-breaking. The first-of-its kind study examined how the brain's structure connects psychopathy, a diagnosable psychological disorder, with real-world actions. After analyzing the brain scans of more than 80 people who reported having certain psychopathic traits, though not officially diagnosed as psychopaths, researchers found those with stronger tendencies toward aggression, impulsivity, and lack of empathy, showed distinct structural brain connectivity compared to individuals with milder traits. Those traits common in psychopaths were in turn associated with behaviors including substance abuse and violence. The research suggests that the brains of people with these qualities are wired differently, with some pathways supercharged while others are weakened, potentially leading to harmful or disturbing behaviors. Roughly one percent of Americans have been diagnosed psychopaths, equating to about 3.3million people. Not all people who have psychopathic traits are true psychopaths, though. These characteristics exist on a spectrum on which people show symptoms to varying degrees without being clinically diagnosed or becoming violent. Typically, research into psychopathy studies how different brain regions communicate with each other. But the Chinese researchers focused on structural connectivity; the nerve fibers that link different regions, the integrity of fiber bundles, and weaker or thicker white matter pathways. Rather than focusing on how different parts of the brain fail to communicate, structural connectivity examines why they fail. Researchers relied on 82 people's brain scans. The people were sourced from the Leipzig Mind-Body Database, a repository of neuroimaging data collected from adults in Leipzig, Germany. They documented each person's psychopathic traits using the Short Dark Triad Test, a questionnaire consisting of 27 questions that capture people's narcissism, manipulative tendencies, and psychopathic traits, such as a lack of empathy. People had to rate themselves on a five-point scale from strongly disagree (one) to strongly agree (five). Higher scores indicated more psychopathic traits. Then, researchers assessed people's behaviors using the Adult Self-Report. Researchers administered the Dark Triad test, which captures people's narcissism, manipulative tendencies, and psychopathic traits, such as a lack of empathy. People with so-called 'dark triad personality traits' share similar facial features and expressions It evaluates a range of emotional and behavioral actions, specifically measuring aggressive, rule-breaking, and intrusive behaviors such as unwanted personal questions or overstepping physical boundaries. A higher score indicated more severe external behaviors. Scientists used each person's MRI data to map out how different brain areas are physically connected. The study identified two key brain connections tied to impulsive and antisocial behaviors in people who possessed psychopathic traits based on their questionnaire answers. 'Psychopathic traits were primarily associated with increased structural connectivity within frontal (five edges) and parietal (two edges) regions,' the researchers said. In the positive network, in which brain connections are strengthened as psychopathic traits increase, stronger connections were clustered in brain regions governing decision-making, emotion, and attention. These included pathways that link emotion and impulse control, which may explain blunted fear and reduced empathy in psychopaths. It also included the area involved in social behavior, which could cause a psychopath to understand emotion but not feel it. And connection correlated with more impulsive actions. In the negative network, in which connections weaken with stronger psychopathic traits, researchers saw weak links in the regions critical for self-control and focus, translating to psychopaths' tendency to hyper focus on their self-serving goals while ignoring how their actions affect others. Researchers also found unusual connections between areas used for language and understanding words. Given that psychopaths are adept at manipulation, this could indicate neural wiring optimized for strategic, controlling communication rather than genuine communication. The team also found a strong connection between brain regions responsible for reward-seeking behavior and areas for decision making, which could explain why psychopaths often chase immediate gratification, even when it harms others. Dr Jaleel Mohammed, a psychiatrist in the UK, said: 'Psychopaths do not care about other people's feelings. In fact if you ever approach a psychopath to tell them about how you're feeling about a situation, a psychopath will make it very clear that they could not care less. 'They literally have a million things that they would rather do than listen to how you feel about a situation.'

Scientists reveal exactly how many microplastic particles we inhale in our homes and cars every day – it's 100 times MORE than previous estimates
From the depths of The Mariana Trench to the summit of Everest, microplastics can be found almost everywhere on Earth. Now, a study has revealed just how many toxic particles are lurking in our homes and cars. Scientists from the University of Toulouse collected air samples from their own homes as well as their cars in realistic driving conditions. Their analysis revealed that adults inhale about 68,000 microplastics measuring 10 micrometers across or less every day – 100 times more than previous estimates suggested. Worryingly, these particles are small enough to penetrate our lungs, according to the experts. 'Everywhere we look, we find microplastics, even in the air we breathe inside our homes and cars,' the team said. 'The biggest concern is how small these particles are – completely invisible to the naked eye. We inhale thousands of them every day without even realizing it. 'Deep inside our lungs, microplastics release toxic additives that reach our blood and cause multiple diseases.' Previous studies have detected microplastics suspended in the air across a wide range of outdoor and indoor environments. However, most research has focused on particles ranging in size from 20 to 200 micrometers. In their new study, the team decided to focus on smaller particles ranging in size from one to 10 micrometers – which are more likely to penetrate the lungs. The researchers collected air samples from their own apartments and cars, before using a technique called Raman spectroscopy to measure the concentrations of microplastics. Their analysis revealed that the average concentration of microplastics in a home is 528 particles per cubic metre, while in cars it is 2,238 particles per cubic metre. Almost all (94 per cent) of the particles were smaller than 10 micrometres. By combining these results with previously published data on exposure to indoor microplastics, the researchers estimate that the average adult inhales about 3,200 microplastic particles ranging in size from 10 to 300 micrometres every day. We also breathe in an estimated 68,000 particles of one to 10 micrometres – 10 times more than we previously thought. 'We found that over 90% of the microplastic particles in indoor air across both homes and cars were smaller than 10 µm, small enough to be inhaled deep into the lungs,' the researchers said. 'This was also the first study to measure microplastics in the car cabin environment, and overall, we detected indoor concentrations up to 100 times higher than previous extrapolated estimates, revealing indoor air as a major and previously underestimated exposure route of fine particulate microplastic inhalation.' Currently, research investigating how microplastics affect human health is in its infancy, but there is a growing body of evidence suggesting they could be harmful. Since plastics contain chemicals known to be toxic or carcinogenic, scientists are concerned that a buildup of microplastics could damage tissues in our bodies. In rodent studies, exposure to high levels of microplastics has been found to damage organs, including the intestines, lungs, liver, and reproductive system. In humans, early studies have suggested a potential link between microplastic exposure and conditions such as cardiovascular disease and bowel cancer. HOW MUCH PLASTIC POLLUTION DO WE BREATHE IN PER DAY? Plastic pollution has become so widespread that we may be inhaling up to 130 tiny pieces a day, research found. Fibres from fleece and polyester clothing and particles from urban dust and car tyres are the biggest sources of so-called microplastics in the air. The tiny specks are lighter than air and could cause asthma, heart disease and auto-immune conditions, the research, published in December 2017, found. The study, a review of a number of recent plastics studies, revealed washing a single polyester garment can produce 1,900 plastic fibres. This plastic pollution is on the rise as more and more synthetic clothing is produced. While only people working with plastic fibres are known to develop respiratory problems, experts say the pollution is so widespread that it may now pose a risk to everyone's health. The study's author, Dr Joana Correia Prata, of Fernando Pessoa University in Portugal, said: 'The evidence suggests that an individual's lungs could be exposed to between 26 and 130 airborne microplastics a day, which would pose a risk for human health, especially in susceptible individuals, including children.

BBC and Met Office team up to tackle ‘weather disinformation'
The BBC and the Met Office are to work together to counter 'weather disinformation'. Britain's main weather forecasting service, funded by the Department for Science, Innovation and Technology, was dropped by the corporation in 2017. But the relationship has now been renewed in order to provide 'weather education' to combat conspiracy theories and other false information. The concerns relate to a minority of online content that misrepresents the reality of the weather, including conspiracies about cloud formations and other phenomena. One widespread theory contends that vapour trails left by aircraft at low-temperature altitudes are in fact chemicals being sprayed into the atmosphere. The purpose of this is not agreed on by the conspiracy theorists spreading the claim, with some saying it is weather control, and others say it is for psychological manipulation of the human population. Other concerns about misinformation relate to exaggerated online claims about impending and devastating 'heatwaves' and 'snowbombs'. Safety concerns over online weather content Broadcast bosses are also worried that some online content could prevent the public taking proper measures to ensure their safety during severe weather. Tim Davie, the director-general of the BBC, said that there has 'never been more need for trusted and impartial information to help people understand today's weather'. He added that the new partnership would help everyone in the UK to make informed decisions about the weather. The announcement of the plan to work with the Met Office comes after the BBC's own weather app wrongly predicted 13,000mph winds across the UK in 2024. This error was blamed on a data issue with the US meteorological service, DTN. In 2021, the BBC made a 'Climate Content' pledge to create programming with more information on climate change that would inspire audiences to make 'greener choices'. It began a process of embedding climate-related messaging into popular programmes. Climate message in BBC programming A 2024 report into the progress of this project stated: 'The BBC has found opportunities to authentically embed sustainability themes into its content, from blockbuster natural history titles such as Asia, which launched this autumn, to gripping climate thriller On Thin Ice: Putin v Greenpeace. 'And even in coverage of the world's biggest sporting event, the Olympics.' The report added that programme-makers would continue their 'commitment to finding audience-relevant ways to reflect sustainability' in BBC output 'across all genres'. Penny Endersby, the chief executive of the Met Office, said of the new partnership with the BBC: 'As the UK's national weather service, we are excited to be back working closely with the BBC again. 'Together we can reach even more people with essential weather information, helping them to plan their days, stay safe when it matters and keep well-informed in our changing climate.'
