Arroz caldo, lugaw, champorado listed among Top 100 porridges in the world

Three well-loved Filipino rice dishes, namely arroz caldo, lugaw, and champorado, have been recognized by international food guide TasteAtlas, securing spots on its list of the Top 100 Porridges in the World. Arroz caldo ranked second overall. Known as the Filipino take on congee, it stands out for its ginger-flavored broth and tender chicken, often topped with scallions, calamansi, or garlic chips. Placing 10th is lugaw, another Filipino rice porridge traditionally eaten for breakfast or a snack for those who are sick because of its soft, easily digestible texture. The last Filipino dish that made it on the list is champorado, ranking 19th. It's a sweet rice porridge made with glutinous rice and cocoa, and it's best paired with milk and dried salted fish. Meanwhile, Indonesia's Bubur ayam took the no. 1 spot, which is a version of chicken congee. In October 2024, TasteAtlas named Chicken Inasal as the top Filipino food. —Hermes Joy Tunac/MGP, GMA Integrated News

Parents urged to teach children Filipino, other native languages

The Komisyon sa Wikang Filipino (KWF) is calling on parents to teach their children to speak Filipino and other native languages. Speaking at the Bagong Pilipinas Ngayon public briefing on Tuesday, newly appointed KWF Commissioner Atty. Marites Barrios-Taran made the appeal in time for the August celebration of Buwan ng Wikang Pambansa, which promotes the appreciation and use of the national and local languages. "'Ito na rin po ay aking adbokasiya na pakiusapan ang ating mga magulang, lalong-lalo na po ang ating mga nanay na sana po ay hikayatin at turuan nila ang kanilang mga anak na gamitin ang wikang Filipino,'' she said. (It is also my advocacy to ask our parents, especially our mothers, to encourage and teach their children to use the Filipino language.) 'Ang wika kasi ay namamatay kapag hindi po iyan nagagamit.'' (A language that is not being used dies.) 'Hindi ko naman po sa inaayawan ang paggamit po ng wikang Ingles, kung hindi nais ko pong bigyan natin ng espasyo sa ating pang-araw-araw na pakikipagtalastasan ang paggamit po ng wikang Filipino at katutubong wika,' she said. (I am not saying we should not use English, but I hope we can use Filipino and our native languages in everyday conversations.) Endangered languages The KWF's 2014 language validation identifies 130 existing languages in the Philippines, 40 of which are considered endangered. To help protect these, the commission runs initiatives such as Bahay-Wika, which immerses children aged 2 to 4 in their native tongue through interactions with elder speakers, modeled after 'Language Nest' programs in countries like New Zealand, Canada, Alaska, and Hawai'i. Another program, the Master-Apprentice Language Learning Program (MALLP), pairs a master speaker with an adult learner to ensure the transmission of linguistic knowledge. The pilot project began in 2017 with the Ayta Magbukun community in Abucay, Bataan, in partnership with the local government and other agencies. Barrios-Taran said KWF is also working with local governments, private groups, and corporations to sustain these programs and encourage communities to take pride in their mother tongue. 'Ang pagmamahal sa wika ay hindi lamang ipinapakita sa mga programa o proyekto, kundi sa araw-araw na paggamit nito,' she said. Supply mission to Bajo de Masinloc successful, says PCG

Even after a China Coast Guard (CCG) vessel fired a water cannon at a Philippine vessel, the mission to deliver fuel and ice supply to more than 30 Filipino vessels in Bajo de Masinloc was successful, according to the Philippine Coast Guard (PCG). 'In the face of harassment and aggressive actions from the China Coast Guard, the Philippine Coast Guard (PCG) proudly wraps up the 'Kadiwa para sa Bagong Bayaning Mangingisda' (KBBM) program, which has delivered vital fuel subsidies and ice supplies to more than 30 Filipino fishing boats operating in Bajo De Masinloc,' said PCG spokesperson for West Philippine Sea Commodore Jay Tarriela in an X (formerly Twitter) post on Monday. 'This initiative underscores the PCG's commitment to supporting the livelihoods of Filipino fishermen who have relied on these waters for generations to sustain their families and communities,' he added. 'By providing these essential resources, the program seeks to alleviate the challenges encountered by our dedicated fisherfolk, allowing them to pursue their work with greater safety and security, especially in light of the harassment from the China Coast Guard.' The PCG earlier deployed BRP Teresa Magbanua and BRP Suluan, along with MV Pamamalakaya, to conduct the mission. However, the Filipino vessels and fishermen encountered dangerous actions from Chinese vessels. 'During the operation, Philippine vessels and fishermen encountered hazardous maneuvers and blocking actions from other vessels in the vicinity. In particular, the MRRV 4406 was targeted with a water cannon, but the seamanship skills by PCG crew members allowed the vessel to successfully evade from getting hit,' said Tarriela. In a related incident, a CCG vessel 3104 collided with a People's Liberation Army Navy (PLA Navy) ship 164, approximately 10.5 nautical miles east of Bajo de Masinloc, the PCG said. The PCG offered assistance to the Chinese vessels. However, the latter did not respond to the said offer. After the incident, the PCG urged the Chinese government to respect the Convention on the International Regulations for Preventing Collisions at Sea (COLREGS). 'The Philippine Coast Guard (PCG) has consistently urged the Chinese government to respect the COLREGS and to approach these matters with professionalism, especially considering their role in enforcing maritime laws,' said Tarriela. 'We have also emphasized that such reckless behavior at sea could ultimately lead to accidents. Our thoughts are with the CCG personnel who may have been injured in this incident,' he added. — BAP, GMA Integrated News
