Anwar: Malaysia to boost semiconductor strategy with fresh incentives and policy tools at Asean summit
In a post on X, Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim said he will deliver a keynote address at the event, marking one year since the launch of the National Semiconductor Strategy (NSS).
Chairing the third National Investment Council (MPN) meeting for 2025 today, he also detailed the results of the NSS after a year of implementation.
'The government continues to focus on strengthening the capabilities of the local semiconductor industry in support of the NSS, with various fiscal assistance programmes having been proposed and approved — reflecting the Madani Government's commitment to advancing the national semiconductor industry.
'During the meeting, I also emphasised the importance of the government strengthening its capacity to formulate responsive and data-driven policies to ensure that incoming investments yield long-term benefits for the country and its people,' said Anwar, who is also the finance minister.
The NSS, launched on May 28 last year, aims to enhance Malaysia's position in the global semiconductor supply chain. Among its key objectives is the development of 110 local companies involved in high-value activities. — Bernama

Asean cannot afford division, says Anwar
KUALA LUMPUR: Asean must remain united and resilient, as the success of its member states depends on the strength of the region, said Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim. He said in an era of rising polarisation, Asean must use its influence to promote dialogue, diplomacy and strategic trust, while creating genuine opportunities for cooperation. "The journey ahead will be fraught with challenges. Asean needs to do more to ensure its cohesiveness in both articulation and action as a clear manifestation of centrality. "We must also uphold our time-honoured geostrategic construct of Zopfan (the Asean Zone of Peace, Freedom and Neutrality) ... and double down on Asean-led mechanisms, including the East Asia Summit, Asean Plus Three and Asean Regional Forum. "Asean cannot control the global currents, nor can we dictate terms to the world. Nonetheless, we can chart our own future for the better with courage, foresight and determination." "In doing so, we will ensure that the benefits of Asean integration are truly realised, bringing value to our people and future generations," he said in his policy speech on Asean, during his visit to the Asean Secretariat today.

Asean's convening power ends Thailand-Cambodia border tensions, says Anwar
KUALA LUMPUR: The successful mediation of tensions along the Thailand-Cambodia border, which resulted in an immediate and unconditional ceasefire, highlights both Asean's strong convening power and the constructive role of its partners in upholding regional stability. Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim said as Asean Chair, Malaysia was entrusted with the responsibility of hosting the leaders of Cambodia and Thailand at a time when rising border tensions had become a serious concern for member states. "I believed that, despite the dangerous and escalating situation, it was both vital and possible to bring the two sides to the negotiating table. "In the lead-up to the meeting, I spoke to both leaders, took care to listen to their perspectives, and urged them to find common ground in the interest of ensuring no more lives were lost. "With the participation of the United States and President Donald Trump himself engaging directly with both prime ministers (Cambodian Prime Minister Hun Manet and Thailand's acting Prime Minister Phumtham), that of course further encouraged and helped facilitate the arrangement, as well as China, both sides agreed to an immediate and unconditional ceasefire. "This reflects not only the strength of Asean's convening power, but also the constructive engagement of our partners in safeguarding regional stability," he said in his policy speech on Asean, during his visit to the Asean Secretariat in Jakarta, Indonesia today.
