The Lexus GS F Is a Luxury Beast That Became Timeless—and Collectors Are Taking Notice

Yahoo13-05-2025

Sometimes, numbers lie. Or, at least, they fail to tell the whole story. Such is the case with the Lexus GS F, a rear-wheel-drive luxury sedan that the Japanese automaker produced from 2016 through 2020. In the real world, the GS F was expected to compete against high-performance European sedans like the BMW M5 and Mercedes-Benz E-Class sedans wearing the coveted AMG badge.
On paper, it fell woefully short, with a 5.0-liter V-8 that spun out 467 horsepower and 389 pound-feet of torque comparing unfavorably with the 2016 M5's 560 ponies or the E 63 AMG S sedan's 577. Unless your primary interest is in setting lap times or owning bragging rights, you should go ahead and shred that paper.

The Lexus GS F harkened back to an earlier time, before the days of turbochargers and all-wheel drive super saloons. By comparison, Lexus' sport sedan was a simple beast with a naturally aspirated V8 engine powering the rear wheels. But its distinction as a pure sports sedan in a segment obsessed with technological advancement isn't the only reason we think it's a future classic. Here are five more reasons this hot Lexus deserves your attention.

If you're going to buy a car that's down on power compared to its most direct rivals, you're going to do so because it offers something the others don't. In the case of the GS F, a big part of its uniqueness and charm comes courtesy of Lexus' 2UR-GSE V8 engine. It redlines at 7,300 rpm and relishes aggressive runs up the tach. And, with peak power coming in just 200 revs shy of its limit, this is clearly an engine that's designed to spin.
As much as purists may wish for a manual transmission, at least the Aisin AA80E eight-speed unit found in the GS F is a good automatic with suitably quick upshifts and rev-matched downshifts.
Enthusiasts love to compare spec sheets and lap times. When it comes to the GS F, as we've already stated, numbers don't tell the whole story. Lexus' sport sedan feels great from behind the wheel. It's quick in a straight line – it'll cover the quarter mile in less than 13 seconds – and at the world's most famous tracks. But it's the GS F's performance on twisty roads that really tells its story, thanks in large part to its track-tuned torque-vectoring rear differential.
The Lexus GS F was tested on race tracks in Japan and Germany – yes, including the Nürburgring – but instead of crafting an all-out track weapon, the Japanese engineers made a car that's a pleasure to drive on real roads.
You've likely heard the saying that it's more fun to drive a slow car fast than it is to drive a fast car slow. While nobody is going to claim that the Lexus GS F is slow, it's also fair to say its performance credentials fail to live up to its high-horsepower contemporaries. The thing is, that means a full-throttle blast or two in the real world may not put its driver into license-losing speeds.
If you do decide to take a GS F to a race track – and good for you if you do – you'll find it's a lot easier to find the limits of Lexus' luxury sport sedan than it is something like a BMW M5 from a similar year.
Lexus is really good at making reliable cars and SUVs. The brand is consistently at or near the top of every customer satisfaction or reliability survey in the world. While much of its all-world credentials were built on models like the LS and ES sedans and GX and RX SUVs, the GS platform has proven to be a durable base. Lexus' 5.0-liter V8, too, is well known for its reliability.
Daily-driving reliability may not be the most important factor for collectors looking for a future classic to park in their garage, but it certainly doesn't hurt.
If it were a trivial matter to figure out what vehicles are going to turn into true collectibles without the benefit of the passage of time, articles like this one wouldn't be very interesting. While it's too soon to tell where resale value on cars like the Lexus GS F that are less than a decade old will land when the next generation starts snapping up their favorites from childhood, early results look promising. A brief perusal of auction results at sites like Bring a Trailer shows that the GS F is holding its value at least as well or perhaps better than the standard-setting BMW M5 (spread across two generations), despite holding a much lower profile among casual market observers.
Word of mouth is a powerful tool, and those who have been lucky enough to spend a significant amount of time with a Lexus GS F tend to sing its praises. Its status as a future classic is still up in the air, but now would be a good time to put this Japanese performance sedan on your radar.

Japan trade negotiator Akazawa says he made progress in U.S. tariff talks

Japan had made some progress in a fifth round of trade talks with U.S. officials aimed at ending tariffs that are hurting Japan's economy, Tokyo's chief tariff negotiator said. "Tariffs have already been imposed on autos, auto parts, steel and aluminum, and some of them have doubled to 50% along with 10% general tariff. These are causing daily losses to Japan's economy," Ryosei Akazawa, said in Washington on Friday after talks with officials, including Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent and Commerce Secretary Howard Lutnick. Akazawa declined to say what progress they had made. The latest round of talks may be the last in-person meeting between senior Japanese and U.S. officials before the Group of Seven (G7) leaders summit that starts on June 15, where U.S. President Donald Trump is expected to meet Japanese Prime Minister Shigeru Ishiba. Japan also faces a 24% tariff rate starting in July unless it can negotiate a deal with Washington. "We want an agreement as soon as possible. The G7 summit is on our radar, and if our leaders meet, we want to show what progress has been made," Akazawa said. "Still we must balance urgency with a need to guard our national interests," he added. Last month Japan's trade negotiator said U.S. defence equipment purchases, shipbuilding technology collaboration, a revision of automobile import standards and an increase in agricultural imports could be bargaining chips in tariff talks. In a bid to reach an agreement with the U.S., Japan is also proposing a mechanism to reduce the auto tariff rate based on how much countries contribute to the U.S. auto industry, the Asahi newspaper reported on Friday. Akazawa said Japan's position has not changed and that the tariffs are not acceptable.

Police cast wide net in probe of defunct North Texas car dealership's business practices

Desire Godfrey said it was time for a vehicle upgrade. The Lancaster mother had her eye on a Lexus. "I had a baby, so I'm looking for something reliable for me and a baby," Godfrey said. She searched online and found what she thought was the right vehicle at The Reserve Auto Group in The Colony. She described the sales process in May 2024 as a positive experience. Warranty and GAP insurance issues But an unexpected oil change six months later changed everything. Godfrey, 33, said a Lexus dealership informed her the vehicle was not under warranty. She also discovered her GAP insurance policy didn't exist. "They (Reserve Auto Group) never paid the warranty company the money they were supposed to pay to activate this warranty and this GAP insurance," she said. Car loan charges continue Godfrey said the costs were included in her car note. She filed a report with The Colony Police Department — and she's not alone. Police said they received their first complaint on Jan. 31. According to a news release, police have been investigating multiple fraud claims connected to the dealership since 2023. The business shut down in December 2024, but complaints continue to come in. Alleged auto fraud pattern Investigators said customers were allegedly instructed to write separate checks for aftermarket warranties or GAP insurance policies. Those payments were supposed to go to third-party providers, but police said the dealership allegedly cashed the checks and never forwarded the money — leaving customers without coverage. Another victim comes forward A second alleged victim, who spoke to CBS News Texas anonymously, said she and her husband also bought a Lexus from the dealership. She provided a non-activation letter from DOWC Administrative Services LLC, a company that offers GAP insurance and warranties. The letter stated: "Please be advised that Reserve Auto has failed to remit payment to Us as the Administrator and Provider for your Contract. Consequently, the Contract was not activated in our system." Investigation still ongoing Police have not made any arrests or publicly identified anyone associated with the allegations. Officers said they are continuing to vet additional alleged victims. CBS News Texas is not naming the person listed as the dealership's owner, as police have indicated he did nothing wrong. He spoke briefly by phone, saying he wanted to schedule an appointment to discuss the claims further because he believed "we did not have all the facts." When asked for clarification, he said he didn't have time to explain. Legal team responds Two emails followed the call, and attorneys from Herrin Law introduced themselves. "We have no comment at this time. Thank you for your interest in our client's side of the story," attorney Benjamin Palatiere said. He requested that all future inquiries be directed to him. Buyer left without coverage Meanwhile, Godfrey said the vehicle itself has not had any issues. But she continues to pay for a warranty and insurance that don't exist. "So nobody wants to refinance the loan. Nobody wants to give me GAP insurance," she said. "It's just more so like I'm going to take it or leave it. If I wreck the car, then I would have to figure out a way to pay that car off." Godfrey said she hopes to recover the money one day.

Goldman Sachs lowers Tesla vehicle delivery estimates

-- Goldman Sachs has lowered its Tesla (NASDAQ:TSLA) vehicle delivery and EPS estimates, citing "weaker monthly datapoints in key regions" such as China, the US, and Europe, along with concerning consumer survey data. The investment bank now anticipates a more challenging environment for the electric vehicle manufacturer. According to Goldman Sachs, U.S. deliveries through May are "tracking down mid teens yoy," based on data from Wards and Motor Intelligence. European registration data for April is said to show a "50% yoy decline," with May data indicating a "mid 20% range yoy decline." In China, the bank said that while April and May data suggest a low single digit sequential increase, it represents a "20% yoy decrease" compared to the same period last year. Consequently, Goldman Sachs now projects Q2 2025 deliveries to be 365,000 units, a notable reduction from their previous estimate of 410,000 and "below Visible Alpha Consensus Data at 417K." They believe Q2 deliveries could range between 335,000 and 395,000 depending on June's performance and "the degree of incentives Tesla utilizes." Consumer survey data from Morning Consult and HundredX, analyzed by Goldman Sachs with their Data Works team, indicates "weak" sentiment for Tesla in North America and Europe, while being "stronger in China." This suggests "demand/brand issues may be contributing to weakness in the US and European markets," said Goldman Sachs. The believe the decline in China could stem from "competition and product cycle timing." Reflecting these trends, Goldman Sachs has revised its delivery assumptions for 2025, 2026, and 2027 to 1.575 million, 1.865 million, and 2.15 million units, respectively, down from prior estimates. Despite the downward revisions, Goldman Sachs maintains a Neutral rating on Tesla shares, lowering their 12-month price target for the stock to $285 from $295.
