Emmerdale star reveals character was almost 'written out' of ITV soap
An Emmerdale star has opened up on the death of her mother and her 'best friend' saying she 'learned a lot about grief' in the process. Lisa Riley, known for playing Mandy Dingle on the ITV soap, lost her mother in July 2012. The tragedy was just months before she joined BBC dancing show Strictly Come Dancing, where she was paired up with Robin Windsor. Riley credits Windsor for helping her get through the grief and has now opened up on her mother and Windsor's deaths. Really excited to be going on @GMB this coming Thursday 12th June. Launching something very dear to my heart with @Sue_Ryder and discussing what's coming up for Mandy & Paddy in @emmerdale 💛💛💛 #gmb #goodmorning #goodmorningbritain #sueryder #charity #emmerdale #london 💙💙💙 — LISA RILEY (BLUE TICK) (@Reallisariley) June 10, 2025 Robin Windsor died in February last year at the age of 44. The Latin and ballroom dancer was best known for appearing on BBC's Strictly Come Dancing. His cause of death was not given. Riley has now opened up on coping with the deaths of Windsor and her mother on ITV's Good Morning Britain. She said: 'I've learned a lot about grief and how to deal with it, and how to be open and to literally ask for help, because it's okay. 'Sometimes people go really within, my brother's that person, we all deal with things differently, and I was pressing the bravado button going, 'I've got to go out and play Mandy Dingle every day, I've got to dress up as Mandy and be funny'. 'There were some days I didn't want to be funny, I'm lucky with the brilliant girls in my dressing room, where we lean on each other, and my work with Sue Ryder, I've realised that there is a helpline out there. 'The internet is brilliant, there are so many places you can go to, Sue Ryder being one of them for help.' She also praised the Emmerdale team for their support, calling them 'phenomenal' after they offered to write out her character to give her time off. Riley added that she wanted to continue working, saying she 'knows it's what Robin would have wanted'. The actress said: 'Me, being me, I didn't want to be at home in my bedroom, or at home thinking about it too much, I had to carry on with my day job. 'But the make-up girls, what people at home won't know when they're watching Emmerdale is I was having my make-up done three times because I couldn't get it together, I couldn't, day in, day out, and work were brilliant, like we know, we'll write you out, we'll give you time off should you need it. Fans have taken to social media to send support to Riley after opening up about her grief. She posted an Instagram reel in support of the Sue Ryder Charity, saying: "You are never ever ever alone with @surerydercharity. Please go to the webpage if you are struggling - there will be someone to listen." One fan replied: "Sending hugs Lisa, how brave you are for sharing your story, your Mum sounds like a wonderful woman." A second added: "This made me cry, bless ur heart, Lisa, your mum would be so proud of the lovely woman you are. Lots of love." A number of characters have left the popular ITV soap this year. BBC Slams David Walliams' 'Unacceptable' Nazi Salute During Comedy Recording
David Walliams has been condemned by the BBC after he allegedly performed a Nazi salute during the recording of hit comedy panel show Would I Lie To You?. The BBC said the gesture was 'completely unacceptable' and apologized to audience members if they were offended by the incident during the filming of a Christmas special. Walliams' rep has been contacted for comment. Sebastian Topan, a Times Radio producer who was in the audience, said Little Britain star Walliams twice made the gesture during the recording at Pinewood. 'Some other panellist was talking when David Walliams started doing the Nazi salute,' Topan told BBC News. 'I was shocked at what I had seen.' He added that host Rob Brydon 'wanted to get past it as quickly as he could,' and Walliams' gesture did not amuse other Would I Lie To You? players. 'It was like an elephant in the room after that as the incident was early on in the recording and so the remainder of the show felt weird,' Topan added. A spokesperson for Banijay UK, which owns Would I Lie To You? producer Zeppotron, said the footage would be cut from the final show. 'Any attempt at humour regarding this deeply offensive gesture, whether broadcast or not, is completely unacceptable in any context,' the spokesperson said. 'It was immediately acknowledged during the recording that this segment would not be broadcast under any circumstances and we apologise to those who were at the recording for any offence caused.' The BBC said: 'The use of such an offensive gesture is completely unacceptable and we apologise to all at the recording for the offence caused.' Walliams was a Britain's Got Talent judge for a decade, but a 2022 Guardian newspaper investigation revealed that he made disrespectful comments about two contestants. He later sued and settled with producer Fremantle over the transcript leak to the Guardian. Best of Deadline 'Stick' Release Guide: When Do New Episodes Come Out? David Walliams ‘gave Nazi salutes on BBC show'
David Walliams reportedly gave two Nazi salutes during the filming of a BBC show. During recording of the Would I Lie To You? Christmas special earlier this week, the comedian allegedly made the gestures while his teammate Helen George, told a story. The Call the Midwife star was trying to convince the other team she had sprained her wrist 'from waving too much' during the Strictly Come Dancing tour. While demonstrating the wave that had caused her injury, she was encouraged to make a grander gesture, at which point Walliams, 53, is reported to have joined in until he made a Nazi salute. The best-selling children's author was reportedly scolded by Rob Brydon, the show's host. However, as the show went on, Walliams is said to have made the gesture again. One audience member said the salutes had landed 'awkwardly' in the room, telling The Times: 'It was all very weird. 'There were gasps from the audience and the other panellists all looked very uncomfortable.' It is believed that there is no chance the footage will be broadcast. Walliams has not been on television since he left ITV's Britain's Got Talent in 2022 after he was found to have made insulting comments about contestants. He was one of the UK's best-known television personalities before it was revealed he had made a derogatory remark about a performer who made a jibe at him. Walliams also made a sexually explicit remark about a different woman who was auditioning for the ITV show in January 2020 at the London Palladium. At the time, he apologised but insisted they had been 'private conversations and – like most conversations with friends – were never intended to be shared'. A spokesman for Banijay UK, which owns the show's production company, said: 'Any attempt at humour regarding this deeply offensive gesture, whether broadcast or not, is completely unacceptable in any context. 'It was immediately acknowledged during the recording that this segment would not be broadcast under any circumstances and we apologise to those who were at the recording for any offence caused.' A BBC spokesman said: 'The use of such an offensive gesture is completely unacceptable and we apologise to all at the recording for the offence caused.' David Walliams' representatives were approached for comment. Broaden your horizons with award-winning British journalism.
