HAWANA 2025: Preparations for main event running smoothly
Communications Ministry deputy secretary-general (Telecommunication Infrastructure) Mano Verabathran said preparations began early this morning and were also monitored by representatives from the Prime Minister's Office.
He said the main event, which will be officiated by Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim, is expected to draw around 1,000 guests comprising local and international media practitioners as well as representatives from various agencies.
'Based on today's rehearsal, I would say 90 per cent is already in place. There are only minor points for improvement, which we have conveyed to the organising team,' he said when met at the full rehearsal at WTCKL here today.
Also present was Malaysian National News Agency (Bernama) editor-in-chief Arul Rajoo Durar Raj, who is also HAWANA 2025 project director.
Mano expressed hope that the cooperation between Radio Televisyen Malaysia (RTM), Bernama and other media agencies in organising HAWANA will continue in future editions.
At tomorrow's main event, the Prime Minister will present the HAWANA 2025 Special Award and the HAWANA 2025 Award, as well as contributions under the Kasih@HAWANA Fund to three media practitioners.
He will also present prizes to the winners of the HAWANA-DBP 2025 Pantun Festival, which was held on May 31.
Earlier in the morning, the HAWANA 2025 Forum will take place at Dewan Tun Hussein Onn, titled 'Malaysian Media Council: Regulator or Media Protector?', which will be followed by a sharing session on 'AI & Media: Tool, Threat or Opportunity?'.
Meanwhile, the HAWANA 2025 Carnival at the Sunway Putra Mall concourse is targeting 5,000 visitors, featuring 20 exhibition booths by major media agencies, government departments and private sector participants, including Bernama, RTM, Astro, Media Prima Berhad, the Information Department, and the Malaysian Communications and Multimedia Commission.
Held under the theme 'Journalism in the New Era: Embracing AI, Safeguarding Ethics,' HAWANA 2025 is the nation's largest gathering of media professionals. It is organised by the Communications Ministry with Bernama as the implementing agency.
The date of May 29 was chosen as National Journalists' Day in commemoration of the first publication of the Utusan Melayu newspaper on May 29, 1939.

Akmal Saleh gives statement to police at Dang Wangi station

Perak MB: Malaysians' duty to respect Jalur Gemilang
IPOH: Every Malaysian who understands the meaning of a sovereign and independent country has a duty to respect the Jalur Gemilang flag, Perak Menteri Besar Datuk Seri Saarani Mohamad said. Respecting the Jalur Gemilang flag is not a question of race, skin colour, religion or party affiliation, he added. "When we fly the Jalur Gemilang, let's do it properly and with respect, not upside down, don't let it get worn or torn. "If it's put up wrongly, let's correct it together, if there are those who don't understand, let's explain. This is how we show we understand and care," he said during his speech at the Perak-level National Month and Fly the Jalur Gemilang Flag 2025 campaign here yesterday. He said respecting the Jalur Gemilang flag showed respect for the country as the flag represented the country and stood for its dignity, history and the future of all Malaysians. "Every time it (the Jalur Gemilang flag) flies high, let us cheer with our spirit, and remind ourselves that we are united under one flag, we fight under one banner, and we bear this flag as we continue to blaze ahead to build our future," he added. Saarani reminded the public that all Malaysians need to commemorate the National Day celebrations as a way to live their lives in peace, unity and to build a country with all their strength and capabilities. "Don't let our independence be just a date on the calendar, let it live in our every heartbeat. As we enjoy the gifts of peace, let us be truly grateful and thankful," he added. Extreme attitudes and arrogance as well as discriminatory behaviour based on race, lineage or skin colour, must be stopped immediately, the Prime Minister declared, adding that he has directed government agencies to take firm action. 'I have given clear instructions to enforcement bodies: if there are any elements – whether prominent figures, politicians, community leaders or ordinary citizens – engaged in threats or incitement, take action. 'The country's safety and peace must be preserved, regardless of race, religion, wealth or status.' Recent incidents, including cases of racial and religious tensions, bullying in schools and workplaces, and the deaths of students, have all been worrying. These instances, he said, must be properly addressed by enforcement bodies, educators, parents and the public. 'This is not something that can be solved through policy announcements or enforcement alone. 'It must come from the people's awareness that we are building a nation with strong economic growth alongside high moral values,' Anwar said in his speech at the 20th Civil Service Premier Assembly here yesterday. Citing as examples the death of schoolgirl Zara Qairina Mahathir in Sabah and the improper handling of the national flag, he warned against exploiting such issues to inflame political sentiments. Anwar also underscored the need for investigations to be conducted promptly, transparently and fairly, without public prejudgment. 'If you follow the law and are willing to act, you can keep your position. 'If you can't, we will replace you with someone principled and courageous. 'This is not a popularity contest. This is about saving the nation,' he added.
