‘Grave insult': Akal Takht head, SGPC object to Haryana govt ads referring to Baba Banda Singh Bahadur as ‘Veer Banda Bairagi'

Indian Express25-06-2025
The acting Jathedar of the Sri Akal Takht Sahib and Takht Sri Kesgarh Sahib, Giani Kuldeep Singh Gargaj, on Wednesday issued a statement condemning the Haryana government for referring to Sikh warrior Baba Banda Singh Bahadur as 'Veer Banda Bairagi' in its public advertisements issued to commemorate his martyrdom day.
Baba Banda Singh Bahadur was a Sikh commander of the Khalsa army who liberated a large part of North India from Mughal rule and established the Khalsa rule in Punjab. His martyrdom day is observed on June 25.
'The Sikh community must remain alert to anti-Sikh narratives. The Haryana government must be made aware of the facts through coordination by Sikhs in the state,' Gargaj said in his statement.
He also asked the Sikh community to take serious note of what he termed a distortion of Sikh identity and urged the Shiromani Gurdwara Parbandhak Committee (SGPC) to ensure coordination with Sikh representatives in Haryana on the matter.
SGPC president Harjinder Singh Dhami also expressed strong objection to the reference. 'This is not only a violation of Sikh principles, but also a grave insult to the life and martyrdom of Baba Banda Singh Bahadur,' Dhami said.
'Referring to him as 'Veer Banda Bairagi' deeply hurts Sikh sentiments. Baba Banda Singh Bahadur became an initiated Sikh under the guidance of Sri Guru Gobind Singh Ji. He renounced the Bairagi identity and led the Khalsa in battle against the Mughal Empire,' he added.
Dhami also highlighted Baba Banda Singh Bahadur's role in establishing the first Sikh rule and abolishing the feudal land system. 'He granted land rights to farmers, which marked a significant step toward social equality,' Dhami stated.
'This appears to be a deliberate attempt to undermine Sikh identity and misrepresent Sikh history,' he said, demanding that the Haryana government stop issuing such advertisements and take strict action against those responsible.
The Haryana government is yet to respond.

Dharmasthala Bhaktabhimani Vedike takes out protest march in Belagavi, Vijayapura

Members of Sri Dharmasthala Bhaktabhimani Vedike took out protest march in Belagavi and Vijayapura on Wednesday against what they called a systematic conspiracy to defame the holy place in the name of a police investigation. In Belagavi, the protestors gathered at the Rani Channamma Circle and staged a rasta roko for over an hour. They marched to the Deputy Commissioner's office and submitted a memorandum to the State government. They demanded action against portals and YouTubers and social media influencers, who, they said, are creating content to defame Dharmasthala even before the Special Investigation Team completed investigation. They demanded legal action against those passing judgments against the temple town, the Sri Manjunath Swami temple and Dharmadhikari Veerendra Heggade. A large number of women self-help group members participated in the protest holding placards hailing the charitable activities of the Sri Dharmasthala Rural Development Project. Sri Shivasiddha Someshwar Swami of Mukti Math said that some people are misusing social media to spread misinformation and prejudiced opinion about the holy place. He demanded capital punishment for such people. Sri Shambhulinga Shivacharya Swami of Hiremunavalli, Siddalinga Shivacharya of Sutagatti, vedike leaders G.R. Soner, Jayaram Shetty, Prabhakar Shetty, Santosh Shetty, Krishna Bhat and others were present. In Vijayapura, the protestors marched from Sri Siddeshwar Swami Math to the Deputy Commissioner's office. They raised slogans against those vested interests trying to defame Dharmasthala. They said that some people are targeting Dharmasthala only to gain fame, while others are doing it with an ulterior motive of getting the Dharmadhikari replaced. The former BJP MLC Arun Shahapur addressed the gathering. He demanded action against portals, influencers and some political leaders working against Dharmasthala. He suspected that some anti-Hindu forces have ganged up against Dharmasthala to defame Dharmadhikari Veerendra Heggade and his family members. He suspected that anti-Hindu forces from other States are involved in the attempt to defame Dharmasthala.

The US's recalibration of its Pakistan policy

There have been several signs of a strategic realignment between Pakistan and the US, whose relations had fallen to a low after US President Donald Trump declared seven years ago that Islamabad had given Washington 'nothing but lies and deceit' in return for billions of dollars in aid. In addition to the Pakistan army chief, Field Marshal Asim Munir, travelling to the US on two occasions in as many months, and even being hosted at the White House by Trump, the US has declared the Balochistan Liberation Army (BLA) and its proxy, The Majeed Brigade, as a foreign terrorist organisation. A joint statement issued after a Pakistan-US counter-terrorism dialogue in Islamabad on Tuesday had Washington lauding Islamabad's 'continued successes in containing terrorist entities that pose a threat' to the region. It would have been instructive if the US had furnished some instances of these successes, especially at a time when anti-India groups such as Jaish-e-Mohammed and Lashkar-e-Taiba and their proxies maintain extensive networks on Pakistani soil. India has said Munir's recent nuclear threats only reflect Pakistan's irresponsible attitude towards its nuclear arsenal and its role as a driver of instability across the region. (AP) Trump's claim that he brokered a ceasefire between India and Pakistan in May has certainly not endeared him to many in New Delhi's decision-making circles, and the latest joint statement too is unlikely to go down well, coming as it does in the wake of the nuclear brinkmanship by Munir during his latest US visit. India has said Munir's recent nuclear threats only reflect Pakistan's irresponsible attitude towards its nuclear arsenal and its role as a driver of instability across the region. Pakistan, especially in the areas bordering Afghanistan, continues to be home to all manner of terror groups that pose a clear danger to the region, and it makes little sense for the US to be seen as rewarding the Pakistani military, which has perfected the art of using terror as an instrument of State policy.
