A shuttler at home abroad: Taiwan's Chou Tien Chen finds his badminton family in Malaysia
Every time Tien Chen arrives in Malaysia for tournaments, the world number seven makes it a point to train with local players, cherishing both the camaraderie and competitive spirit he finds here.
Among those he regularly hits the court with are two-time Paralympic gold medallist Cheah Liek Hou and professional shuttler Aidil Sholeh Ali Sadikin, all under the guidance of experienced coach Nova Armada.
The 34-year-old said he values the warm welcome and high-quality sparring he receives in Malaysia, a country that continues to play a key role in his preparations.
'My teammates from Taiwan also join me in training here. Liek Hou and coach Nova are good friends of mine. They always welcome me to train here,' he told reporters during the Malaysia Masters 2025 at Axiata Arena.
Tien Chen also shared that he plans to remain in Malaysia for training before heading to his next assignment, the Singapore Open 2025, scheduled from May 27 to June 1.
He will open his campaign in Singapore with an all-Taiwan clash against compatriot Chi Yu Jen.
Earlier, Tien Chen suffered a surprise straight-sets defeat at the hands of India's Sathish Kumar Karunakaran, going down 13-21, 14-21 in the opening round of the Malaysia Masters.
The third seed admitted he struggled to handle Sathish's dominance at the net, which forced him into a series of uncharacteristic errors.
So far, 2025 has been a challenging year for Tien Chen. Out of nine tournaments, his best showing came at the Taiwan Open, where he finished as runner-up.
Despite the setbacks, Tien Chen remains determined to fight his way back to top form, staying committed to his training and long-term goals. — Bernama

Match-fixing arrests rock Singapore basketball league
SINGAPORE, Aug 20 — Singapore's Corrupt Practices Investigation Bureau (CPIB) has arrested nine individuals for their suspected involvement in match-fixing in this year's K. Star National Basketball League Division 1. CPIB said that it had arrested eight Singaporeans and one permanent resident, aged between 19 and 35, including players from participating teams in the competition. 'One of the alleged fixed matches was between Tagawa and Tong Whye, which took place on Aug 1, 2025,' it said in a statement on Tuesday. The agency added that investigations are ongoing under the Prevention of Corruption Act. CPIB reiterated Singapore's strict zero-tolerance stance on corruption, stating that match-fixing in any form is not condoned. KUALA LUMPUR, Aug 20 – Astro kicked off the 2025/26 English Premier League (EPL) season in style with the launch of 'One for the Fans', a season-long campaign celebrating the passion and loyalty of EPL supporters. Fans in jerseys and scarves filled the atrium, swapping predictions, snapping photos with club banners, and enjoying 'live' entertainment put on by Astro. 'We finally have a proper striker in (Viktor) Gyokeres and noise on sacking Mikel Arteta is unfounded,' he said. 'Arsene Wenger also needed some time to win and though Arteta has had around six years I believe changing the manager now wouldn't do us any good,' he said of the former Arsenal manager of 22 years. Another Arsenal faithful, Mike Ahmand, came in a classic 1998 jersey and explained how these gatherings kept the spirit of the club alive. 'Long passes may be our bread and butter this season because if you look at last season we played lots of short crosses. With the new striker it's best to try some long balls. As for Arteta he is not Pep (Guardiola) or Thomas Frank (new Tottenham Hotspurs manager).'He has his own vision and even if we finish second or third we can still make the money to improve the team. United fans, though still healing from their club's worst-ever finish last season, turned up in numbers, eager to see what Ruben Amorim's rebuild might bring. Olusegun's still blazing – veteran striker's vintage display lifts Red Warriors

The Nigerian, fondly known as Dayo and who now holds Bahraini citizenship, struck in the fourth minute after pouncing on a wayward back pass from KL's Ukrainian defender Dimitro Lytvyn and slotting past goalkeeper Quincy Kammeraad. Olusegun doubled his tally soon after, reacting quickest to Kammeraad's spill from T. Saravanan's volley to stab home from close range. 'The harmony in the squad is very good. We've only been together a few weeks but the dressing room is positive. 'The boys are really bonding, speaking with each other, working things out. It's a big family we are building here and that's important for us.' He admitted Kelantan's poor start to the Super League season, including a 0-4 thrashing by Kuching City, had been a test but one the players had embraced. 'Although we didn't start well, it hasn't broken our spirit. We are getting better each week. As captain, I don't have to do much to keep the team together – the players are already supporting each other. It's getting better and today's result shows that.' Looking ahead, Olusegun urged caution even as Kelantan take a two-goal cushion into the second leg. 'It's still too early to dream about titles or top-three finishes,' he stressed. 'Right now, it's about finding balance and building a proper team. Maybe later in the season we'll see how far we can go – maybe top four, top five, maybe even a cup final. But today, it's about improving game by game.' He also acknowledged the challenge of Kelantan's upcoming fixtures. 'Sabah, for example, are one of the best teams in the league these past two, three seasons. We respect that. We just want to be at our best and see where we can go. The important thing is to keep improving our tactical chemistry.'
